Renault 4 EV vs Citroën ë-C3: Range, Space, Charging and UK Price Compared (2026)

The Renault 4 offers the higher published range and larger boot, while the Citroën ë-C3 starts cheaper in the UK. Compare battery versions, charging windows, luggage space and dated price-guide figures before ordering.

Short answer: the Renault 4 E-Tech electric is the larger, longer-legged and faster-DC-charging-on-paper choice, while the Citroën ë-C3 is the cheaper UK entry point. Renault’s October 2026 French-market update gives the 4 up to 310 km (about 193 miles) with its 40 kWh battery and 415 km (about 258 miles) with 52 kWh. Citroën’s current UK page quotes up to 202 miles for the 44 kWh ë-C3 Standard Range. Renault also publishes 420 litres of boot space versus 310 litres for the ë-C3, but the manufacturers may use different measurement methods, so the figures are not directly comparable.

Prices need more care. The UK Citroën guide lists £21,990 on the road for PLUS and £23,690 for MAX. A Renault UK guide lists the Evolution+ 52 kWh at £27,195 before a stated £3,750 Electric Car Grant, or £23,445 after that grant is applied as printed. Those are dated guide snapshots, not guaranteed live quotes, and the cars are not equivalent trims. Check the current configurator, grant eligibility and delivery date before placing an order.

What is actually being compared?

The quoted figures come from published manufacturer specifications and UK price-guide entries, not an independent road test. They cover several dates and markets:

  • Renault’s newest cited update, dated October 8, 2026, reports French-market range and consumption for updated Renault 4 versions.
  • Renault’s UK price guide is an older snapshot and is not confirmed to include the October 2026 changes.
  • Citroën’s UK model page is current, while its price guide and launch announcement are earlier documents.

Do not treat every number as a same-day, same-country specification. Renault says order opening varies by version and country, so a French-market update does not automatically prove that an identical UK car can be ordered with identical equipment. Confirm the local trim, battery, onboard charger, grant treatment and delivery timing with a UK retailer.

At-a-glance verdict

Question Renault 4 E-Tech electric Citroën ë-C3 Practical reading
Longest published range Up to 415 km WLTP (52 kWh) in Renault’s October 2026 French-market update Up to 202 miles WLTP (44 kWh Standard Range) on Citroën UK’s current page Renault has the higher quoted maximum, but the source markets and units differ.
Shorter-range version Up to 310 km WLTP (40 kWh), October 2026 French-market figure Up to 132 miles WLTP (30 kWh Urban Range) The smaller Renault battery is still quoted above the smaller ë-C3 battery in absolute distance, subject to market specification.
Published boot volume 420 litres 310 litres Renault has 110 litres more on the published figures; identical measurement methodology was not verified.
DC charging claim 30 minutes from 15–80%; 80 kW (40 kWh) or 100 kW (52 kWh) in launch material 26 minutes from 20–80% on 44 kWh Standard Range, current UK page The charge windows are different, so the times are not a clean head-to-head test.
AC charging claim 11 kW bidirectional; 15–80% in 2 h 37 min (40 kWh) or 3 h 13 min (52 kWh) in launch material 20–80% in 2 h 50 min with 11 kW; about 4 h 10 min with 7.4 kW in launch material Battery size, charger power and start/end state of charge all affect the apparent result.
Lowest cited UK price £23,445 including the £3,750 grant shown in the Renault guide for Evolution+ 52 kWh; £27,195 before it £21,990 on the road for PLUS 44 kWh Citroën’s cited list price is lower, while Renault’s grant-adjusted figure is not a like-for-like trim comparison.

Range: which car goes farther?

Renault 4 battery choices

Renault’s October 2026 update reports two headline figures for the 4 E-Tech electric in France:

  • 40 kWh urban-range version: up to 310 km WLTP, with combined consumption of 14.7 kWh/100 km.
  • 52 kWh comfort-range version: up to 415 km WLTP, with combined consumption of 14.4 kWh/100 km.
  • Plein Sud version: 400 km with the 52 kWh battery.

These are manufacturer WLTP results, a standardized laboratory comparison rather than a promise of the distance you will cover between charges. Cold weather, motorway speed, heating, payload, tyres and traffic can all reduce actual range. The update also describes aerodynamic improvements, so its figures supersede the earlier launch numbers when discussing the updated specification.

Renault’s earlier order-opening material quoted up to 308 km for the 40 kWh/90 kW (120 hp) car and up to 409 km for the 52 kWh/110 kW (150 hp) car. Use those older figures only when identifying an earlier specification or a vehicle whose build has been checked against that release; do not blend them with the October 2026 figures as though they were one test result.

Citroën ë-C3 battery choices

The current Citroën UK page lists:

  • Urban Range: 30 kWh and up to 132 miles WLTP.
  • Standard Range: 44 kWh and up to 202 miles WLTP, with 113 hp.

Citroën’s UK price guide gives slightly different trim-level entries: 199 miles for PLUS and 198 miles for MAX. That variation illustrates why the model page’s “up to 202 miles” headline should not be copied to every trim. Ask for the exact WLTP value attached to the vehicle identification number or build code you are ordering.

How to use the figures

Renault’s October figures are in kilometres and come from a French-market update; Citroën’s headline is in UK miles. Converting units helps orientation but does not create a controlled comparison. Neither source supplies an independent, same-route real-world test. If most driving is urban and you can charge at home, the smaller battery may be sufficient. Frequent motorway trips, winter travel or limited access to chargers favour the largest battery available in your market, provided its price and equipment fit your budget.

Space and everyday practicality

Boot capacity

Renault’s order-opening release lists 420 litres of boot volume for the Renault 4. Citroën’s UK launch announcement lists 310 litres for the ë-C3. On the published numbers, the Renault offers 110 litres more, which should make it easier to carry a pushchair, shopping or several small cases without using the rear seats.

There is an important qualification: the two manufacturers may use different conventions for measuring luggage volume, so an identical methodology cannot be assumed. Trim, floor position, parcel shelf use and whether a temporary under-floor area is counted can change the practical result. Inspect both cars with your own luggage if boot fit is decisive rather than relying on the headline litres alone.

Cabin and body-size implications

The published specifications do not provide a directly comparable table of exterior dimensions, rear-seat measurements or usable cabin width. It would therefore be misleading to declare a winner for adult rear-seat comfort from the boot figures alone. A buyer carrying rear-facing child seats should test the actual seat, front-seat position and door opening at a retailer.

Charging: time, power and battery version matter

Renault 4 AC charging

Renault’s launch material describes an 11 kW bidirectional AC system. From 15% to 80% state of charge, it quotes:

  • 40 kWh battery: 2 hours 37 minutes.
  • 52 kWh battery: 3 hours 13 minutes.

“Bidirectional” means the vehicle hardware is designed for two-way energy flow, but the useful functions available to a UK owner depend on the final vehicle specification, compatible equipment, software and local approvals. Do not assume that every advertised bidirectional feature is enabled on every trim.

Renault 4 DC charging

The same launch release quotes 30 minutes from 15% to 80%. It lists an 80 kW DC rate for the 40 kWh battery and 100 kW for the 52 kWh battery. Because this is a 15–80% window, it cannot be compared directly with a rival’s 20–80% claim without acknowledging the different starting point and energy added.

Citroën ë-C3 AC charging

Citroën’s current UK page quotes 2 hours 50 minutes from 20% to 80% using an 11 kW wallbox for the 44 kWh Standard Range. The launch announcement gives about 4 hours 10 minutes for a 7.4 kW charger and about 2 hours 50 minutes with the optional 11 kW onboard charger. The 7.4 kW and 11 kW times describe different hardware, so check which onboard charger is fitted rather than assuming every ë-C3 accepts 11 kW.

Citroën ë-C3 DC charging

For the 44 kWh Standard Range, Citroën quotes 26 minutes from 20% to 80% at 100 kW DC on its current UK page. Its launch announcement also states that the 44 kWh battery uses LFP chemistry. The page does not establish that the 30 kWh Urban Range has the same DC power or timing; obtain the exact charging specification for that version.

Cable and home-charging requirements

Citroën says a Mode 3 charging cable is included and can be used with a home or public wallbox. That means a new owner may not need to buy a separate cable, but verify the connector type, cable length and the exact vehicle specification in the order paperwork. Installation of a wallbox, supply upgrades, tariffs and public-network fees are separate costs not included in the vehicle prices quoted here.

UK prices: what the published guides say

Citroën ë-C3

The UK price guide lists the 44 kWh versions at:

Trim Battery and output shown in guide On-the-road price WLTP entry in guide
PLUS 44 kWh, 83 kW £21,990 199 miles
MAX 44 kWh, 83 kW £23,690 198 miles

These are guide figures rather than a guaranteed current offer. The guide’s 199- and 198-mile entries differ from the current page’s “up to 202 miles” statement, most likely reflecting trim or specification differences. Confirm the exact on-the-road price, standard equipment, registration fees and any finance conditions with the retailer.

The guide is not dated precisely in the document and is indexed as roughly six months old. It is not confirmed to incorporate Renault’s October 2026 update, and grant eligibility or amount can change. Treat £23,445 as the arithmetic shown in that document, not as a promise that every buyer or every current car receives the grant.

Why the price gap is not a simple win

At the published list-price level, the ë-C3 PLUS is £5,205 below the Renault figure before the grant. After the stated Renault grant, the difference falls to £1,455 compared with the ë-C3 PLUS, but the cars differ in body, battery, output, trim equipment and price-guide date. The Renault figure is also for a 52 kWh Evolution+ model, while the Citroën figures are for the 44 kWh PLUS and MAX. Compare live cars with equivalent safety, comfort and charging equipment, not just the model names.

Which one suits which buyer?

Choose the Renault 4 if range and luggage flexibility lead your decision

  • You regularly make longer journeys and want the option of the 52 kWh battery.
  • The published 420-litre boot figure better matches your family, hobby or holiday luggage needs.
  • You value the 100 kW DC figure quoted for the 52 kWh version and can confirm that specification for your country.
  • You are prepared to verify the latest UK price, grant and trim availability rather than relying on an older guide.

Choose the ë-C3 if upfront UK cost and compact urban use matter most

  • You want the lower cited UK on-the-road price, starting at £21,990 for PLUS in the cited guide.
  • Your normal driving is urban or suburban and the 30 kWh Urban Range’s 132-mile WLTP figure is adequate.
  • You prefer the 44 kWh Standard Range’s 202-mile headline and 26-minute 20–80% DC claim without paying for the Renault’s larger format.
  • You want a Mode 3 cable included, subject to checking the connector and final specification.

Do not choose on WLTP alone

Estimate your own weekly mileage, identify where you can charge, and allow for winter and motorway use. A car with a lower WLTP figure but reliable overnight home charging can be more convenient than a longer-range car that depends on public chargers. Conversely, drivers without home charging may value the larger battery and faster DC capability enough to justify the additional purchase cost.

Checks to complete before signing an order

  1. Confirm the market and model year. Ask whether the vehicle is the updated UK specification or an earlier build, especially for Renault 4 range, charging power and equipment.
  2. Get the battery and trim in writing. The 30 kWh and 44 kWh ë-C3 versions, and the 40 kWh and 52 kWh Renault versions, have different range and charging claims.
  3. Request the exact WLTP figure. Citroën’s guide lists 198 or 199 miles by trim despite a 202-mile model-page headline.
  4. Check charging hardware. Verify onboard AC power, maximum DC rate, included cable and whether any bidirectional functions are enabled for the car and your home equipment.
  5. Recalculate the final price. Include registration, delivery, options, wallbox installation, finance charges and any grant eligibility conditions.
  6. Test your real load. Put your child seats, pram, work equipment or largest suitcase in the boot and sit in the rear before committing.
  7. Ask about delivery. Renault states that order opening differs by version and country; a quoted price is not proof that the desired battery and trim are immediately available.

Bottom line

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric is the stronger published-specification choice for buyers who need maximum range, a larger quoted boot and the possibility of 100 kW DC charging with the 52 kWh battery. The Citroën ë-C3 is the more affordable UK entry point in the cited price guide and offers a credible 44 kWh Standard Range, but its 310-litre boot and lower headline range make it better suited to buyers whose driving is mainly local or who can charge routinely at home. Because the figures come from different markets, dates and charge windows, obtain a live UK quote and the exact vehicle specification before treating either car as the better deal.
