1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReliable used luxury cars can be good buys, but reliability alone does not make a car a bargain. Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car guide identifies selected model years of the Lexus ES, Acura RDX, Audi A4, and BMW 3 Series as above-average for reliability; it does not establish that they are currently inexpensive. Treat these as candidates to investigate, then compare the specific car’s price, condition, service history, inspection results, and likely repair costs with local alternatives.
Which used luxury cars have reliability support?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car guide lists the following luxury models and model years as above-average for reliability. The years below are candidates to verify against the guide itself before shopping; they are not a ranked list, a price appraisal, or a guarantee about an individual car.
| Model | Model years identified in Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide | What the evidence does—and does not—mean |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus ES | 2015, 2016–2018, 2019, 2020–2021, 2022–2023 | Reliability support for the listed years; no current asking-price or value finding. |
| Acura RDX | 2015–2016, 2019, 2021, 2022 | Reliability support for the listed years; no current asking-price or value finding. |
| Audi A4 | 2019, 2023 | Reliability support for the listed years; no current asking-price or value finding. |
| BMW 3 Series | 2021–2022 | Reliability support for the listed years; no current asking-price or value finding. |
These four entries are the specific candidates supported by the available guide information. They cannot responsibly be expanded into ten current bargains without comparable live listings and local price data. Nor should a model-year entry be treated as evidence that every trim, powertrain, or example from that year has the same history or condition.
How to decide whether a candidate is actually a bargain
Judge the particular vehicle, not just its badge or model-year reputation. A low asking price can be offset by deferred maintenance or an expensive repair; a higher-priced car may be the better value if its condition and records justify the difference. Compare like with like in your area, especially for trim, mileage, drivetrain, and equipment.

- Confirm the model year. Check that the exact year appears in Consumer Reports’ guide. Its designation is reliability guidance, not an appraisal of what the car should cost.
- Compare local listings. Look at comparable cars in the same region and with similar year, trim, mileage, and condition. The cited sources do not provide current local asking prices, so there is no supported nationwide bargain price to quote.
- Review records and vehicle history. Ask for maintenance receipts and a vehicle-history report. Check whether scheduled work was completed and whether the records align with the mileage and reported ownership history.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the car before purchase, including for signs of accident damage, leaks, worn components, warning lights, and work likely to be due soon. Use the findings to estimate near-term costs rather than relying on a clean appearance or a seller’s assurances.
- Evaluate the cabin and controls in person. Check comfort, space, visibility, and how easily you can use the controls and features. Consumer Reports’ used-luxury guidance notes that poor ergonomics and cramped interiors can make a seemingly attractive car a poor fit.
- Estimate ownership costs. Factor in the inspection’s repair findings and the possibility of costly out-of-warranty repairs before deciding what the car is worth to you.
Are used luxury cars expensive to maintain?
They can be, particularly when repairs fall outside warranty coverage. Consumer Reports warns that out-of-warranty repairs on used luxury cars can be costly; the sources cited here do not establish one maintenance-cost figure that applies across these models or years. Base your estimate on the specific car’s inspection, service history, and the work it is likely to need—not on a brand-wide assumption.
What reliability rankings can—and cannot—tell you
Reliability information helps narrow a search, but it cannot predict the condition of a particular used vehicle. Consumer Reports says its vehicle ratings draw on independent tests and reliability and owner-satisfaction surveys, and cautions, “Don’t choose a luxury car by the name and badge alone.” Its used-car guide also considers comfort and performance alongside reliability.

Brand-level findings offer context, not a substitute for model-year and vehicle-specific checks. In its February 12, 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study announcement, J.D. Power reported that premium vehicles were less dependable than mass-market vehicles overall and that Lexus ranked highest among all brands for the fourth consecutive year. That finding does not guarantee the reliability of any individual Lexus—or establish that one is priced below market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use this shortlist
Start with the listed years of the ES, RDX, A4, and 3 Series, then screen local cars by price, records, inspection results, comfort, and expected repairs. A car is a bargain only when the asking price makes sense for that particular vehicle after those checks. If you want a list of ten bargains “right now,” it needs current, location-specific listings and comparable values; the reliability evidence alone cannot support that ranking.
