Its advertised 180 mph is a design target—not the speed reported for that test. The milestone advances the U.S. program, but the available announcements do not set a public date for operational demonstrations or passenger service.
What the first crewed flight demonstrated
REGENT reported that the Viceroy prototype made its first human-crewed flight on September 2, 2026, with two captains aboard. The company gave the flight’s duration as 30 seconds, distance as 1,956 feet (596 m), and height as 33 feet (10 m) above the water. It did not state the test’s speed, so the flight should not be described as a demonstration of the craft’s 180 mph design maximum.

REGENT called the flight the start of the program’s final stage of sea trials and said full-scale testing and operational-readiness work would continue. This is a significant step beyond water-only and hydrofoil testing, but it does not establish routine passenger operations or completed certification. REGENT’s announcement describes the milestone and its reported measurements.

How fast is a Seaglider designed to go?
REGENT lists the Viceroy’s speed as up to 180 mph and its range as up to 180 miles. Those are manufacturer-stated design figures, not independently verified routine-service performance or results from the first crewed flight. The published configuration is for 12 passengers and two crew members. These figures describe the planned Viceroy, not a proven commercial service specification. REGENT’s FAQ provides the company’s stated specifications.

How does a Seaglider operate?
REGENT describes its Seaglider as a maritime wing-in-ground-effect craft designed to travel over water. It moves through three operating modes as speed and conditions change:
- Float: The craft rests on its hull at low speed, including near docks.
- Foil: As it accelerates, hydrofoils lift the hull, supporting movement through harbor and near-shore conditions. This is a waterborne mode, not conventional aircraft flight.
- Ground-effect flight: Over open water, the craft flies close to the surface, within one wingspan of the water, according to REGENT.
The sequence helps explain why the program’s earlier crewed hydrofoil testing and its 2026 crewed flight are distinct milestones. REGENT reported crewed foil testing in June 2025 before announcing the first crewed flight in 2026. An Associated Press report from August 20, 2025 described the planned 180 mph flight as not yet completed at that time; the later REGENT announcement records the subsequent flight milestone.

REGENT’s March 11, 2026 campaign update said it expected first customer deliveries in 2027. That is a company forecast, not confirmation that deliveries will occur on that date or that passenger service will begin then. The later crewed-flight announcement describes continued testing and production work but does not give a public schedule for operational demonstrations or scheduled passenger service.
The March update also described ongoing full-scale Viceroy tests, parallel Squire drone testing, and plans for a 255,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Rhode Island. REGENT reported a commercial order book above $10 billion; that is a company-reported figure, not independently audited bookings. The campaign announcement supplies those program and facility details.
Who regulates Seagliders in the United States?
REGENT says the U.S. Coast Guard is the primary regulator for its Seaglider and identifies 46 C.F.R. Subchapter T, the framework for small passenger vessels, as the certification path it is pursuing. The company also says the Coast Guard and FAA are developing a memorandum of understanding under which FAA technical expertise could support the maritime regulatory process. This is REGENT’s description of its approach, not evidence that certification is complete. The company’s FAQ sets out that regulatory framing.
What the program’s partnerships and defense work show—and do not show
REGENT identifies The Twenty Five as its U.S. launch partner and reports an order for up to 60 Viceroy craft. The company also describes defense applications, including a $15 million U.S. Marine Corps Warfighting Lab contract and a cooperative research and development agreement with USSOCOM. These are company-reported orders and development relationships; they do not establish delivered craft, opened routes, or operational defense deployment. The announcements provide no public operational-demonstration calendar.
