Those are manufacturer figures for the Middle East model, not independent test results. It is not yet a straight, same-market comparison with the Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid: Volvo’s current UK T6 and T8 figures differ from the up-to-124-mile electric range announced for newer variants intended for European and American markets.
What FREELANDER has announced for the 8
At its October 3, 2026 global brand launch in Abu Dhabi, FREELANDER described the 8 as a plug-in hybrid SUV for the Middle East market. The company’s stated headline figures are:

- Total combined-cycle range: 886 km, or about 550 miles.
- All-electric combined-cycle range: 110 km, or about 68 miles.
- Peak power: 460 kW, approximately 617 mechanical horsepower.
- Peak torque: 662 N·m.
FREELANDER says specifications vary by trim. The launch release gives power in kW, not bhp; 617bhp is a conversion of the 460 kW figure, not the unit the company printed. The range and output claims apply to the Middle East model and should not be treated as verified results from independent testing. FREELANDER’s October 3 launch announcement identifies the market and qualification.

The announced hardware comprises a 2.0T dedicated hybrid engine, a 34.12 kWh LFP battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive. The announcement does not provide independent consumption results or settle every technical detail of the powertrain terminology, so the company’s range figures are not a substitute for comparable real-world testing.

FREELANDER also reports that it used more than 1,000 test vehicles, with over 200 assigned to all-terrain durability testing. It says those dedicated vehicles covered 2.15 million kilometres. These are company-reported validation figures, not an independent audit. The company’s chief engineer, Peter Matkin, said: “Before you face extreme heat, heavy rain or rough ground, we put the car through it first. So wherever you go, you can drive with confidence,” the launch announcement reports.
How the figures compare with Volvo’s XC60 PHEV
There is no single Volvo number that makes this a like-for-like contest: the current UK XC60 page lists two variants, while Volvo has separately announced longer-range versions for Europe and the United States. The table keeps those market and model distinctions visible.

Volvo’s current UK T6 and T8 are five-seat, all-wheel-drive petrol/electric models, each with a 19 kWh nominal battery. Their UK prices and figures are market-specific and come from Volvo Cars UK’s XC60 specifications page, which may change over time. The up-to-124-mile claim belongs to a different long-range announcement, not those currently listed UK T6 and T8 figures. Volvo says the newly announced versions offer more than 2.5 times the electric range of the existing variants; it does not establish their UK launch date or final UK price in its September 15, 2026 announcement.

Is the FREELANDER 8 a direct XC60 rival?
It is reasonable to compare them as premium plug-in hybrid SUVs, but the available facts do not prove they are equivalent vehicles or currently competing for the same buyer. FREELANDER has published Middle East figures; Volvo’s detailed prices and variant figures above are for the UK, while its longer-range announcement covers Europe and the United States. A fair buying comparison still needs matching market specifications, trims and test-cycle data.

Several practical comparison points remain unconfirmed for the FREELANDER 8 in the cited announcement: price, full interior and cargo dimensions, final safety ratings, towing capacity and market-specific delivery timing. Without those, the 8’s headline range and power cannot settle value, family practicality or capability against an XC60.

FREELANDER identifies the UAE as its first international market and names Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors as dealer partners. Its stated rollout plan begins with left-hand-drive markets before right-hand-drive and European specifications. The rollout announcement describes the Abu Dhabi reveal and regional approach, but the cited material does not give a complete country-by-country delivery schedule or confirm final RHD and EU specifications. FREELANDER’s rollout announcement sets out the stated sequence.

The wider launch story includes company-reported China claims, but they should not be mistaken for specifications or independent evidence about the Middle East model. Chery Group said the vehicle drew more than 10,000 orders in China within 48 hours and reported a hybrid-car high-altitude challenge at 6,002.33 metres in August 2026. Those claims are described in Chery Group’s September 15 account; the announcement does not make them independent verification of range, durability or demand in other markets.

What a buyer should compare next
- Match the market and trim. The FREELANDER figures are for the Middle East model, and Volvo’s current prices are UK figures. Do not compare them as though both apply in one country.
- Separate total range from electric range. The FREELANDER’s 886 km headline is combined-cycle total range; its electric-only claim is 110 km. Volvo’s cited UK page gives electric range, while its newer announcement gives an electric-range claim for other markets.
- Wait for a complete local specification. Pricing, safety ratings, dimensions, cargo space, towing and confirmed delivery schedules are needed to judge overall value and usability.
- Check official market channels before ordering. FREELANDER says the UAE is first and that the rollout will proceed by market and steering configuration; availability elsewhere should not be assumed.
