Williams team principal James Vowles says Carlos Sainz and teammate Alex Albon have the ability to win races if they have the right car. That is what “championship-level” means in this context: a judgment about their quality and potential, not a claim that Sainz has won an F1 drivers’ title or a prediction that he will.
What Vowles means by “championship-level”
In remarks reported by Yahoo Sports’ MotorBiscuit on 3 October 2026, Vowles described Sainz and Albon as drivers who “could go out there and win races if they had the right car underneath them.” The condition matters: his praise is about what they can deliver with competitive machinery, not a guarantee of results regardless of the car.

Vowles’s assessment is backed by his experience working with Sainz at Williams. Formula 1 reported in August 2026 that Vowles valued Sainz’s steady response to difficult results and his determination to keep improving performance. Williams had retained Sainz and Albon for its 2027 lineup, placing the two drivers at the center of the team’s plans.

Vowles was already publicly making a strong case for Sainz during the 2024 signing process. BBC Sport reported on 30 July 2024 that Vowles described him as “one of the top four drivers – if not at times the number two driver on the grid.” That was Vowles’s personal assessment, not a statistical ranking. He also said he was surprised Mercedes and Red Bull had not pursued Sainz.

Vowles framed the signing as a choice of both a fast driver and a leader. In a July 2024 Formula 1 interview, he explained that Williams wanted Sainz’s leadership as well as his pace, and discussed why Sainz chose Williams over other available projects. Sainz joined the team from Ferrari for 2025 on a multi-year deal.
Vowles’s view was also shaped by what he saw Sainz do across teams. He told BBC Sport: “After spending the last nine months talking to him at least weekly, what I’ve realised is he is a performance machine.” He added: “Look at Carlos. Look at every team he has been in. They have improved significantly – and I get why.” The remarks connect Sainz’s value not just to speed, but to the work and feedback that can help a team improve.

What former Ferrari boss Vasseur praised
Frederic Vasseur’s praise comes from a different period: the seasons Sainz spent at Ferrari in 2023 and 2024. The Yahoo Sports/MotorBiscuit report described Vasseur commending Sainz’s pace, qualifying and contribution to the technical side. It quoted him as saying: “Very strong season, not only in terms of pace and qualification, but in terms of contribution to the technical aspect.” That wording is reported by the article; a primary transcript for the quotation was not independently available.
Vasseur’s publicly documented response to Sainz’s impending departure offers a clear example of the professionalism he valued. After Ferrari announced Sainz would leave at the end of 2024, Vasseur praised the driver’s reaction and his third-place finish at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix. Formula 1 quoted Vasseur: “The reaction of Carlos was more than professional that he said, ‘Okay, I have one year to go, I will do my best from the first corner to the last corner of the season.’”

Vasseur also praised Sainz’s race at Bahrain: “Today [in the race he] was very strong, very solid, he did a very good job, and I’m more than happy with the job that he did.” The performance and response to difficult circumstances illustrate why a former team boss might value more than a driver’s raw pace.
How the two bosses’ praise differs
| Speaker | Relationship and period | What the praise emphasizes |
|---|---|---|
| James Vowles | Williams team principal; signing process in 2024 and work with Sainz at Williams | Leadership, team improvement, consistency and the potential to win races with a competitive car |
| Frederic Vasseur | Ferrari team principal during Sainz’s 2023 and 2024 seasons | Pace, qualifying, technical contribution, professionalism and the Bahrain performance |
These are assessments from bosses who worked with Sainz in different team contexts, not the results of a formal driver poll. Together, they describe a driver valued for speed and for helping a team operate and develop more effectively.

“Championship-level” is an expression of perceived ability, not a record of achievement. The cited remarks support the view that Vowles believes Sainz can win races in the right car and that both Vowles and Vasseur rate qualities beyond outright pace. They do not establish that Sainz has won an F1 drivers’ championship, or that he is certain to win one in the future.
