REGENT has not confirmed a Seaglider service launch or vehicle debut in Hawaiʻi. Hawaiʻi has had a proposed inter-island and intra-island network under study since 2022, but the latest Hawaiʻi-specific announcement in the available sources is from January 2024. REGENT’s latest reported crewed-flight milestone took place in Rhode Island in September 2026—not in Hawaiʻi.
What is a REGENT Seaglider?
REGENT describes its Seaglider as an all-electric vessel designed to travel over water using three operating modes: it floats on its hull, rises onto hydrofoils, then flies close to the water’s surface in ground effect. The company says hydrofoiling supports wave tolerance and maneuverability near harbors and coastlines. These are company descriptions, not independent performance findings. REGENT’s account of its 2026 flight also describes a triple-redundant digital control system and certified mariners as captains.
The full-scale, crewed Viceroy prototype, named Paladin, is 55 feet long with a 65-foot wingspan. REGENT describes the Viceroy as designed for 12 passengers and two crew, with capabilities of up to 180 mph and up to 180 miles. Those are stated design capabilities, not demonstrated Hawaiʻi service speeds, range, or passenger capacity in commercial operation. What has been proposed for Hawaiʻi?
In June 2022, REGENT and Pacific Current announced a partnership to develop a potential Seaglider network in Hawaiʻi. The announcement named Pacific Current, a Hawaiian Electric Industries subsidiary, as preferred energy and infrastructure partner, and Mokulele Airlines as launch partner. The proposed work included analysis of routes, ports and harbors, as well as economic, environmental, and community considerations; financing and charging infrastructure were part of the service concept. REGENT’s 2022 announcement described an intent to bring 12-passenger Viceroy vessels to the islands.

The Hawaiʻi Seaglider Initiative launched in January 2024 as a coalition of private, public, and community organizations. Its announcement described continued feasibility work and community engagement, with attention to energy and harbor infrastructure, environmental and cultural concerns, workforce development, and equitable access. It named Mokulele as the expected first operator and referred to earlier expectations for a Viceroy fleet by mid-decade. That was a plan, not confirmation of deliveries or passenger service. The initiative announcement also says it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation.
The launch announcement listed more than a dozen organizations, including airlines, energy and shipping companies, labor, business, lodging, and cultural organizations. Membership in the coalition does not mean each organization is an operator, funder, or service provider. When will Seagliders come to Hawaiʻi?
The available sources do not establish a Hawaiʻi launch date, route schedule, ticket sales, local operational approvals, or a confirmed delivery date. The January 2024 initiative announcement is the latest specific Hawaiʻi milestone in these sources. There is a separate development milestone: REGENT reported that the full-scale crewed Viceroy prototype began on-water trials in Rhode Island in March 2025, followed by its first crewed foil-mode test in June 2025. On September 2, 2026, the company reported the prototype’s first human-crewed flight: 30 seconds, covering 1,956 feet (596 meters) at 33 feet (10 meters) above the water. REGENT described that flight as the start of the final stage of sea trials, not as commercial passenger service. The company’s flight announcement is the source for those measurements.

Will Seagliders fly between the Hawaiian islands?
Inter-island service is part of the network concept announced by REGENT and Pacific Current, and the 2024 initiative also considered intra-island connections. But a proposed network is not an operating route: the available announcements do not identify a confirmed route map or timetable. They also do not provide enough independent route data to compare Seagliders with existing airline or ferry options on trip time, reliability, passenger cost, or environmental impact.
REGENT says U.S. vessels are regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard, while vessels elsewhere are overseen by the relevant maritime authorities. The announcements reviewed do not establish what local approvals a Hawaiʻi service has obtained. Any future comparison should account for actual route availability, full passenger cost, weather and sea-state operating limits, accessibility for local communities, and environmental effects—not just a vehicle’s advertised speed or range.
