Phantom Auto, a startup that developed software for remotely operating vehicles, announced in March 2024 that it was closing operations. Founder and CEO Shai Magzimof cited market conditions and insufficient funding; TechCrunch separately reported that the company had been unable to secure new financing.
What happened to Phantom Auto?
On March 12, 2024, TechCrunch reported that Phantom Auto was shutting down after failing to secure new funding. In a public LinkedIn post, founder and CEO Shai Magzimof wrote: “After seven years of efforts to reshape the future of physical labor at Phantom Auto, we’ve made the tough decision to close operations. there are various factors contributing to this, including market conditions and insufficient funding.”
The accounts are related but distinct: TechCrunch attributed details about the unsuccessful financing effort to an unnamed source, while Magzimof’s post publicly identified market conditions and insufficient funding as contributing factors. The available reporting establishes the closure announcement, not the company’s later legal status or what happened to its assets, technology, or customer arrangements.
What did Phantom Auto do?
Phantom Auto built a teleoperation platform that let a remote driver operate a vehicle when needed. The company initially pursued uses on public roads, including robotaxis and self-driving trucks. In 2019, it shifted its focus toward logistics work, where vehicles operate in more controlled settings.

Those reported agreements do not show whether any contract, deployment, or installed system continued after Phantom Auto announced its closure.
Why was Phantom Auto shutting down?
Magzimof named market conditions and insufficient funding as factors behind the decision to close. TechCrunch reported that the startup had not secured new funding. The evidence supports those explanations, but not a single definitive cause: the CEO described multiple contributing factors, and the financing details in TechCrunch’s account came from an unnamed source.

How much funding did Phantom Auto raise, and how many people worked there?
Contemporaneous reports in March 2024 put Phantom Auto’s total funding at about $95 million, but a later directory entry gives a different figure. The available material does not explain the discrepancy, so the figures should not be combined or treated as definitively reconciled.
