Ford’s recall covers certain 2021–2023 Bronco Sport and 2022–2023 Maverick vehicles because their 12-volt battery may suddenly degrade or fail. It is not a recall of an electric vehicle’s high-voltage traction battery. Check your vehicle identification number (VIN) to confirm whether your vehicle is included; Ford’s announced dealer inspection and any necessary battery replacement are free.
Which Ford vehicles are included?
The recall is NHTSA campaign 25V-019, also identified by Ford as 25S02. Ford reported it on January 17, 2025, and NHTSA’s acknowledgement is dated January 22, 2025. It covers a potential population of 272,817 vehicles:
- Certain 2021–2023 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles
- Certain 2022–2023 Ford Maverick vehicles
Those model-year ranges are not confirmation that a particular vehicle is recalled. Eligibility is determined by VIN. See the NHTSA recall acknowledgement and Ford’s Part 573 safety recall report.
Is this an EV battery recall?
No. The affected component is the conventional 12-volt vehicle battery, which supports vehicle electrical systems and starting functions. It is not the high-voltage battery used to propel an electric vehicle. NHTSA categorizes the recalled component as an electrical-system 12V/24V/48V battery.

In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.

What can happen if the battery fails?
NHTSA says the 12-volt battery may degrade and suddenly fail. A failure can result in loss of electrical accessories—including hazard lights—or loss of drive power, increasing crash risk. Ford’s owner notice also describes a possible inability to restart after an auto stop/start event or a stall while coming to a stop at low speed.
In its 2025 safety recall report, Ford estimated that 1% of the potentially involved vehicles had the defect. That is Ford’s estimate for the recall population, not a measured failure rate for every owner or a diagnosis of an individual vehicle.

How to check your VIN and arrange service
- Find the VIN. It is visible at the lower-left area of the windshield and may also appear on your registration or insurance card.
- Look up the VIN. Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup to check for unrepaired recalls. NHTSA notes that some recent recalls may not yet have every affected VIN identified, so check again if necessary.
- Contact a Ford or Lincoln dealer. Arrange the recall inspection and repair. Ford’s recall notice lists customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
What Ford’s free remedy involves
Dealers will inspect the 12-volt battery and replace it if necessary, at no charge. Ford’s April 2025 dealer instructions describe checking the battery label: the procedure says an AGM-labeled battery passes that inspection, while an EFB or non-Ford AGM battery does not and should be replaced under the service procedure. These are dealer instructions, not a recommendation for owners to inspect or replace the battery themselves. Read the Ford dealer technical instructions for 25S02. Do not buy a battery as a substitute for the recall repair.

NHTSA’s quarterly report, updated January 16, 2026, records 193,026 vehicles remedied through 2025 Q4 out of the 272,817-vehicle recall population. NHTSA’s “Total Remedied” figure includes vehicles remedied, inspected with no repair needed, or returned to inventory; it is not necessarily the number of batteries replaced.
