Not yet for unsupervised highway hauling. CNET reporter Abrar Al-Heeti rode in a Kodiak autonomous semi with a safety operator aboard and ready to take control. The truck handled streets, turns and highway driving during the demonstration, but Kodiak’s planned driverless long-haul launch was still a company target—not a completed deployment—in its October 6, 2026 update.
What happened during the ride?
At Kodiak’s Mountain View, California, headquarters, Al-Heeti rode in the company’s diesel-powered semi for about 20 minutes. A safety operator remained aboard and could take control, so this was a supervised demonstration—not a driverless trip.
The truck navigated surface streets and tight turns, passed rows of parked cars and trailers, joined a highway, reached a reported 55 mph, changed lanes and avoided construction cones. Those observations show what the truck did on this particular ride; they are not an independent safety assessment or proof of performance across other routes and conditions.
The CNET report describes diesel as standard for heavy-duty commercial trucking and says Kodiak views it as enabling longer distances than an electric truck. It gives no numerical comparison, so the ride does not establish a quantified range advantage.

What does Kodiak’s 96% readiness figure mean?
In an October 6, 2026 company update, Kodiak said its long-haul Autonomy Readiness Measure (ARM) reached 96% at the end of September. The company defines ARM as the percentage of claims and evidence in its safety case that are materially complete.
That is a measure of progress on Kodiak’s safety case, not a 96% probability that the truck is safe, an externally measured safety score, or a guarantee that a launch will happen. Kodiak said it remained on track for a year-end 2026 launch of unsupervised long-haul commercial service; that timing was the company’s plan, not confirmation that service had begun.

Kodiak Director of Safety Frank Fratrik said the month’s progress came from completing hazard analyses for systems that take over if something goes wrong and strengthening evidence after an adversarial review of the safety argument. That account, like ARM itself, comes from the company update.
Where are Kodiak trucks already operating without a driver in the cab?
Kodiak said Atlas Energy Solutions owned and operated 35 unsupervised driverless trucks in the Permian Basin as of the end of the second quarter of 2026. That is an existing industrial operation, distinct from the planned long-haul highway service.

The CNET report describes Kodiak’s planned Texas route as 219 miles from Dallas to Houston, mostly on I-45, and names IKEA as a planned service customer. It does not establish that the route or service has launched. A driverless operation in the Permian Basin therefore should not be treated as evidence that Kodiak was already hauling freight without an onboard operator on that planned public-highway route.
What human work remains around a driverless run?
Even when no person is in the cab during a run, people still prepare the truck. Kodiak COO Michael Wiesinger told CNET: “Before launching an autonomous truck, it gets inspected, it gets fueled, it gets prepared for the run.” He added: “Those preparations are done by humans on the ground.” Driverless describes who is aboard while the truck drives; it does not mean the operation requires no human work.

How should Kodiak’s progress be compared with other trucking projects?
The CNET report names Aurora, Waabi, Gatik and Tesla among companies working on autonomous trucking, but the cited material provides no comparable deployment, safety or readiness measures for ranking them. For a useful comparison, separate the evidence by operating environment, human supervision, route and geography, and whether a claim comes from a reported ride observation or a company-reported progress measure. A supervised demonstration, an industrial deployment and a planned public-highway service are different stages—not interchangeable proof of readiness.
The available sources also do not establish an independent safety comparison, a crash-reduction figure, an employment impact, fuel savings or total cost for Kodiak’s system. Kodiak’s plans and reported operating figures should be read as company statements, while the ride account documents one supervised demonstration.
