Rawalpindi’s Phase I electric-bus service was inaugurated on 19 November 2025, with 45 buses serving four routes. The fare is Rs20 per ride; women, students, senior citizens over 60 and special persons were promised free travel.
When did Rawalpindi’s electric buses start?
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated Phase I on 19 November 2025. The launch put 45 buses into service across four corridors. Radio Pakistan reported Nawaz saying that “forty-five eco-friendly buses have arrived, while more will come soon.” Radio Pakistan’s launch report and Dawn’s route coverage described the opening service.

Dawn’s launch-period account gave route lengths and some intermediate stops. Other reports use slightly different spellings or endpoint names, including Hamrai/Humrahi and Fawara/Faizabad; the route names below follow Dawn’s account.

The route lengths and bus counts are the figures in Dawn’s report from the launch period. They describe the announced Phase I deployment, not a guarantee of present-day frequency or service conditions.

How much is the fare, and who rides free?
The announced fare is Rs20 per ride. Women, students, senior citizens and special persons were promised free travel; Radio Pakistan specifies that the senior-citizen concession applies to people over 60. The launch reports did not explain how eligibility is verified or whether passengers need a card or other documentation. Radio Pakistan and the Government of Punjab launch announcement report the fare and concessions.
What facilities do the buses have?
The buses are air-conditioned and were announced with CCTV, free Wi-Fi and charging ports for mobile phones and other gadgets. The launch reports do not give technical specifications for the vehicles, battery range, charging time or operating frequency.

Will more buses be added?
Expansion figures announced in 2025 are targets, not evidence that the additional buses have entered service. The Associated Press of Pakistan reported plans for 80 buses in Rawalpindi and 145 across the division, including 15 each for Jhelum, Chakwal and Attock. Those numbers should be treated as planned capacity unless a later service update confirms delivery and deployment. Associated Press of Pakistan’s expansion report describes the targets.
