The right Range Rover Sport engine depends on how you drive and whether you can charge regularly. Choose a P460e or P550e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) when home or workplace charging can cover much of your routine. Choose a petrol mild hybrid (MHEV) when you want a simpler petrol powertrain without plugging in. The P550e delivers more power, but its higher output does not automatically make it the better buy.
Range Rover Sport engines at a glance
Land Rover’s current international technical data identifies two plug-in-hybrid petrol models and three petrol mild-hybrid models. The P460e and P550e combine a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with a rechargeable hybrid system, all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. The P360, P380 and P400 are petrol mild hybrids; they are not plug-in vehicles.

What a PHEV does
A plug-in hybrid has a traction battery that can be replenished from an external power source. When charged, it can use electric drive for part of a journey before the petrol engine is required. The P460e and P550e are the plug-in choices in the cited Range Rover Sport data.

This arrangement is most useful when charging is convenient and frequent. A driver who plugs in at home or work can start many trips with energy bought at an electricity tariff rather than relying entirely on petrol. If charging is unavailable, the vehicle remains a petrol hybrid, but the financial and environmental case for carrying the larger plug-in battery becomes less compelling.
What an MHEV does
A mild hybrid recovers some energy during deceleration and uses a small electrical system to assist the petrol engine and support functions such as stop-start operation. It is not designed to travel long distances on electric power and cannot be charged from a wall socket. The P360, P380 and P400 therefore suit buyers who want hybrid assistance without changing their routine to include plugging in.
Calling an MHEV a “plug-in hybrid” is inaccurate. Confirm the badge and specification on any used vehicle, because engine names and availability have changed over time.

How much difference is there between the P460e and P550e?
P460e: the lower-output PHEV
The P460e is rated at 460 PS and 660 Nm. Land Rover lists up to 122 km of WLTP electric range for it, which is two kilometres more than the P550e’s certified maximum in the cited information. That small range difference should not be treated as a promise of lower running costs or longer real-world trips; wheel choice, weather, speed, load and battery condition can outweigh it.

For a buyer who wants a rechargeable six-cylinder Range Rover Sport but does not need the highest stated output, the P460e is the logical PHEV baseline. Its suitability still depends on price, equipment and availability in the specific market.
P550e: more power and torque
The P550e is rated at 550 PS and 800 Nm. It is the more powerful of the two listed PHEVs and may appeal to drivers who regularly carry heavy loads, tow within the vehicle’s approved limits, or simply value stronger acceleration. Those are reasons to select it, but they do not establish that it is better for every owner.
The P550e’s listed electric range is up to 120 km WLTP, slightly below the P460e figure. Both range numbers are certified comparison values, not guaranteed distances for an individual trip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the output figures do not tell you
- They do not establish purchase-price differences, tax treatment, insurance premiums or local incentives.
- They do not reveal how much of your routine can be completed electrically.
- They do not confirm towing limits, payload or equipment for a particular market.
- They do not predict real-world acceleration with a full vehicle, roof accessories, different wheels or a depleted battery.
If the P550e’s extra 90 PS and 140 Nm will not change your actual use, compare the complete purchase quote and specification instead of paying solely for the larger number.

Understanding the 120–122 km WLTP claims
Land Rover lists “up to 122 km WLTP” for the P460e and “up to 120 km WLTP” for the P550e. WLTP is a controlled certification procedure intended to make vehicles comparable. It is not a guarantee that either car will travel that distance on electricity in your conditions.
Land Rover’s technical documentation says the figures result from official manufacturer tests under EU legislation with a fully charged battery and are for comparison purposes only; real-world figures may differ. The company identifies driving style, environment, load, wheel fitment, accessories, route and battery condition as factors that affect results.
Apply the range figure to your own route
- Measure the distance of your normal daily loop, including school, work, shopping and return legs.
- Separate routine motorway driving from slower urban or suburban sections; higher speeds generally demand more energy.
- Allow for winter temperatures, heating or air-conditioning, passengers, luggage, roof equipment and larger wheels.
- Decide whether you can recharge before the next day. A route that fits the certificate but cannot be recharged reliably may still require petrol use.
- Treat the WLTP number as a comparison point when evaluating quotes, not as an individual-trip guarantee.
Which Range Rover Sport engine is best for different drivers?
Choose a P460e if
- You have dependable home or workplace charging.
- Your regular journeys often fit within the usable electric range after allowing for conditions.
- You want the PHEV concept but do not need the P550e’s additional output.
- You are comparing total purchase and running costs rather than selecting by peak power alone.
Choose a P550e if
- You specifically need or strongly value 550 PS and 800 Nm.
- You frequently drive with substantial passengers or luggage and want the higher-output PHEV.
- The price, equipment and local tax position make the upgrade worthwhile in your market.
- You accept that its certified electric range is listed at up to 120 km WLTP, not more than the P460e.
Choose a petrol MHEV if
- You cannot install or reliably access charging.
- Your driving pattern is unpredictable and you do not want to manage a plug-in routine.
- You prefer a conventional petrol ownership pattern with mild-hybrid assistance.
- A PHEV’s extra battery capacity, price or weight does not fit your priorities.
Within the MHEV group, the cited data distinguishes the P360, P380 and P400 by stated output of 360, 380 and 400 PS. It does not provide enough information here to declare a universal best choice among them. Compare the exact vehicle’s equipment, drivetrain, price and local availability.

Ask where the car will be charged, not merely whether it has a charging socket. A PHEV makes the most sense when you can routinely connect it at home or work and leave with a useful state of charge. Public charging can work, but dependence on unreliable access, long detours or inconvenient waiting changes the ownership proposition.

Before buying a P460e or P550e, confirm the supplied charging equipment and the connector specification for your market and model year. Do not assume that a cable from another vehicle is compatible or that every used example includes the same equipment. The vehicle’s manual, dealer specification sheet and physical connector are the appropriate checks.
A simple charging-use test
- Identify the normal overnight parking location.
- Confirm that an approved outlet or charging installation is permitted and practical there.
- Check whether your electricity tariff makes overnight charging attractive.
- Estimate how many nights per week the vehicle will actually be connected.
- If the answer is “rarely,” compare an MHEV on simplicity and price rather than assuming PHEV savings.
Estimate running costs without pretending there is one universal winner
No source cited here establishes a single cost winner. Your result depends on local petrol and electricity prices, charging losses, how often you charge, the proportion of electric driving and the vehicle’s exact specification.
Use this method with current local prices:
- Record your annual kilometres and the share that can realistically begin with a full battery.
- Obtain the dealer’s or owner’s documented fuel and electricity consumption information for the exact model year where available.
- Multiply petrol use by your local fuel price and electricity use by your electricity tariff, including any relevant public-charging fees.
- Add insurance, servicing, taxes, financing and depreciation to the purchase comparison.
- Run a second scenario for winter, motorway-heavy or low-charging use. A PHEV that looks inexpensive in a high-charging scenario may not win when most journeys use petrol.
Keep the scenarios separate from the WLTP certificate. A certified figure supports vehicle-to-vehicle comparison; it is not a personal fuel bill.
Model year and market checks are essential
Variant names are not stable across the Range Rover Sport’s production history. An earlier Land Rover sheet names P440e and P510e PHEVs, while the later sheet names P460e and P550e. That change means a used-car advert using only “Range Rover Sport PHEV” is incomplete.

Before committing to a vehicle, verify:
- Model year and first-registration date.
- Exact powertrain badge and battery specification.
- Country-market equipment and emissions documentation.
- Drivetrain, transmission and approved towing limits for that vehicle.
- Wheel and tyre size, because these can affect certified range.
- Whether the charging cable and other supplied equipment are present.
- Warranty terms and the condition of the high-voltage battery on a used example.
Land Rover’s regional Sport overview for Jamaica expressly notes that options and features may vary by market. The international WLTP technical sheet is therefore useful for comparison, but it should not be treated as a complete local order guide.
Use the 75% journey statistic correctly
Land Rover reports that 75% of customers’ average daily journeys are 94 km or less. The company calculated this from InControl data covering more than 143,000 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles across 12 global markets between June 2023 and June 2024.
This is a useful indication that many daily journeys are short enough to make a PHEV concept relevant. It is not evidence that a particular driver will travel 94 km electrically, nor does it describe every market, climate, route or charging pattern. Compare your own logged journeys with the certified figures and leave a margin for conditions.
Towing, load and performance: verify the exact vehicle
The P460e and P550e technical sheet identifies AWD and automatic transmission, but the material here does not establish a single towing limit for all markets and configurations. Towing capacity can depend on model year, equipment, hitch approval and local regulations.
If towing is central to your decision, request the exact vehicle’s approved maximum trailer and nose weights in writing. Also check payload after passengers, luggage and accessories are included. Do not transfer a limit from an older P440e or P510e sheet to a newer P460e or P550e, or from one market to another.
A decision checklist before you order or buy used
- Identify the powertrain: P460e and P550e are PHEVs; P360, P380 and P400 are MHEVs in the cited data.
- Confirm the market and year: match the VIN, specification sheet and registration documents.
- Audit charging: establish where and how often you will plug in.
- Map your journeys: compare real distances and speeds with the WLTP figures, allowing for weather and load.
- Set the performance requirement: decide whether 460 PS/660 Nm is sufficient or whether 550 PS/800 Nm serves a real need.
- Calculate two cost cases: frequent charging and infrequent charging, using local prices.
- Check practical limits: towing, payload, wheel fitment, connector and supplied cable.
- Compare the complete quote: include taxes, finance, insurance, servicing and depreciation rather than focusing on badge or power.
Bottom line: match the powertrain to your routine
The P460e is the sensible starting point for a buyer who wants a rechargeable Range Rover Sport and can charge regularly without needing the P550e’s extra output. The P550e is for the buyer whose use or priorities justify 550 PS and 800 Nm. A P360, P380 or P400 MHEV is the clearer choice when charging access is unreliable or simplicity matters more than electric-only capability.
Whichever route you take, use the exact local model-year specification. The PHEV range figures are WLTP comparisons, variant names have changed, and equipment, towing limits and availability can differ by market.
