Ram has a reported plan for a new North American midsize pickup, with production slated for Belvidere, Illinois. But the truck’s name, specifications and retail arrival date have not been confirmed in the sources reviewed. The “surprise” is still a tease, not a revealed vehicle.
What is confirmed about Ram’s midsize pickup?
At Stellantis Investor Day 2024, the company discussed “two new low cost pickups for the small and mid-sized segments,” with most of their expected volume outside North America. On January 22, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Stellantis planned a new midsize pickup at its Belvidere, Illinois, plant. AP said the move would return about 1,500 UAW-represented employees to work. That figure describes the reported employment impact—not the truck’s production volume or expected sales. Does the 2027 plant reopening mean the truck goes on sale then?
No confirmed retail launch date is established. AP reported that the UAW said the Belvidere plant would reopen in 2027. A plant reopening is a workforce and manufacturing milestone; it does not, by itself, establish when the pickup will reach dealerships or be available to buy. Associated Press report

Will the new truck be called the Dakota?
That has not been confirmed. The reviewed sources do not identify the North American truck’s production name, so “Dakota” remains speculation rather than an announced revival. A December 4, 2024, forum repost credited to TopSpeed writer Chris Bruce said then-Ram CEO Chris Feuell had discussed a smaller pickup, but had not disclosed its final name or platform. Is the Ram 1200 the Belvidere pickup?
The available official material does not make that connection. Ram describes the 1200 as a global midsize pickup, but the announcement does not say it is the truck planned for Belvidere or for North American sale. What details remain unknown?
The reviewed sources do not confirm the North American pickup’s platform, powertrain, dimensions, price, trims, towing capacity, payload rating or retail launch date. Ram’s official news hub and the product announcement checked do not identify the truck or supply a specification sheet; that is a limit of those pages, not proof that no announcement exists elsewhere.
