Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for Shakti engine-related facilities at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Sunabeda, Odisha, on 6 October 2026. The Ministry of Defence says the occasion will mark HAL Koraput’s 2,000th aero-engine delivery and highlight a second Shakti engine production line, backed by an investment of ₹218 crore.
What is planned at HAL’s Sunabeda site?
Sunabeda, in Odisha’s Koraput district, is home to HAL’s Koraput division. The Ministry of Defence’s advance release, issued on 5 October 2026, describes the 6 October event as marking the division’s 2,000th aero-engine delivery and highlighting a second production line for Shakti engines. The Times of India’s report on 5 October explicitly describes Singh as scheduled to lay the facility’s foundation stone.
The production line is an announced project, not a facility reported as operational. The available official announcement does not give a construction timetable, commissioning date, production capacity, annual output forecast or detailed breakdown of the investment.
How much is the second Shakti production line expected to cost?
The Ministry of Defence puts the investment for the second Shakti engine production line at ₹218 crore. Its 5 October release says the event will highlight “the establishment of a second production line for Shakti engines, with an investment of ₹218 crore.” The release does not provide a more detailed cost breakdown.

What is the Shakti engine, and which helicopters will the line support?
The Ministry says the added production capacity is intended to support indigenous helicopter platforms, including the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and Prachand Light Combat Helicopter. In a 5 October report carrying PTI, The Economic Times describes the Shakti programme as a HAL–Safran Helicopter Engines collaboration involving the Safran Ardiden 1H1 turboshaft, developed for Indian military needs. That engine identification and partnership detail comes from the report; the Ministry’s advance release does not name Safran or Ardiden 1H1.
Why does the announcement emphasize domestic engine capability?
The Ministry frames domestic aero-engine capability as strategically important because propulsion systems involve significant technological complexity. That is the Ministry’s stated rationale for the emphasis on indigenous capability, rather than a quantified assessment in the announcement.
