That makes it the largest unsecured creditor claim identified in the reporting—not a court ruling that Rad ultimately owed or paid the full amount. The filing landed amid falling revenue, a weaker e-bike market and changing import tariffs, but the available evidence does not show that tariffs alone caused the bankruptcy.
What does the $8.36 million customs claim mean?
Bicycle Retailer and Industry News reported in 2025 that Rad listed CBP’s claim for $8,363,749 in its bankruptcy schedules and categorized it as disputed. The distinction matters: a scheduled claim is an amount reported in the bankruptcy case, while an allowed claim is an amount accepted through the case process. A listed amount does not, by itself, establish what was ultimately allowed, settled or paid.
CBP was reported as Rad’s largest unsecured creditor. The sources available do not establish the claim’s final allowed amount or payment status. A third-party docket index shows activity through August 25, 2026, but does not resolve that question.

Estimated assets and liabilities at filing
Bicycle Retailer and Industry News reported estimated assets of $32.1 million and estimated liabilities of $72.8 million in Rad’s bankruptcy filing. These are filing-era estimates, not a statement of the company’s present financial position or a final accounting of what creditors received.

Revenue fell across the reported years
GeekWire’s 2025 bankruptcy reporting gave the following gross revenue figures. Its 2025 figure was revenue so far that year at filing time, not a full-year total.

The reported decline provides important context for the bankruptcy, but revenue alone does not explain why the company failed or establish how much any one cost contributed.
Did tariffs cause Rad Power Bikes to go bankrupt?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: tariffs were a pressure on an industry already facing business and market challenges, but the sources do not establish them as the sole cause of Rad’s bankruptcy. The Washington Post reported in 2025, citing Circana, that U.S. e-bike retail sales peaked at about $878 million in 2022. That is an estimate of the U.S. retail market—not Rad’s sales—and a market peak does not by itself prove what drove the company’s financial results.
Import tariffs can add cost to goods covered by them, but the effect on a particular company depends on factors such as country of origin, product classification and which tariff rules apply. The reported filing figures and sales-market estimate do not quantify how much tariffs added to Rad’s costs or isolate their impact from demand, other expenses and industry conditions.

How have e-bike tariffs changed?
PeopleForBikes’ July 24, 2026 update said new tariffs took effect after the 10% Section 122 tariff expired. It reported that 10% or 12.5% rates replaced that tariff in most covered cases, with limits on stacking for some countries.
Those rates should not be read as a universal tariff on every e-bike. The applicable treatment depends on the import’s country of origin and classification, as well as the rules in force at the time. The July 2026 update describes a time-specific policy change; it does not establish a single rate for all e-bikes or future imports.
Who bought Rad Power Bikes after bankruptcy?
A January 2026 report said Life EV won the auction for Rad’s assets, with court approval still pending at the time of that report. The later docket activity noted above does not establish the final disposition of CBP’s disputed claim, and the available information here does not confirm a later final ruling on that claim.
