Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose an endurance compound when consistent torque, modulation and low wear over long stints matter most; choose a sprint compound when maximum initial response and high-temperature performance matter for short sessions. “Ceramic” is not a universal pad class: it usually describes a carbon-ceramic or ceramic-composite disc, which requires a pad compound specifically approved for that rotor.
There is no cross-brand friction-coefficient league table. A pad’s useful temperature window, torque curve and wear rate depend on the car, disc, caliper, cooling, ABS calibration and race length. The figures below are manufacturer-published values that must be kept with their stated test context.

Endurance, sprint and ceramic: what the labels actually mean
Racing pad names describe the job a formulation is intended to do, not a universal performance ranking. Two pads both called “sprint” can have different friction coefficients and torque curves, while an endurance pad can be faster over a full stint because it stays predictable and retains material.

Endurance compounds
Endurance material is designed for stable braking through many laps, repeated heat cycles and long stints. The priorities are predictable torque, easy modulation, controlled release, low pad wear and acceptable disc wear. A slightly less aggressive first stop is often a benefit: it makes the pedal easier to meter as temperatures, fuel load and tire grip change.

PAGID describes RSL 1E as an endurance variant with a manufacturer claim of up to 20% longer pad life. Race Technologies describes RE10 as a professional endurance compound emphasizing exceptional consistency, low wear and stable braking during long sessions. DIXCEL lists R23C for endurance use with an average friction coefficient of μ 0.30–0.35 and high-temperature stability. Those values describe the named products, not every endurance pad.
Sprint compounds
Sprint pads target qualifying, short races and aggressive track sessions in which strong initial bite and high-temperature response are worth accepting more wear or a narrower cold operating range. Race Technologies calls RA70 an advanced sprint compound with aggressive bite and RS45 a high-friction sprint compound. ENDLESS notes that sprint compounds span different friction coefficients and torque curves so drivers can choose the pedal response they prefer.
A sprint pad is not automatically “better.” If the car is used for long stints, a very aggressive compound may consume material quickly, overwork the disc or make rear-axle control difficult once the first few laps of heat have passed.

Ceramic-disc racing compounds
“Ceramic” must be treated as a disc-and-pad system. Carbon-ceramic and other ceramic-composite rotors have different friction, heat-transfer and surface requirements from iron or steel rotors. A conventional iron-disc race pad can damage the rotor, fail to reach its intended transfer behavior or deliver an unpredictable coefficient when used on a ceramic disc.
PAGID RSC 2 is a low-metallic, resin-bonded compound containing steel and aramid fibers. PAGID describes it as a special race compound for ceramic discs, with a high fiber content, medium-high friction, fade resistance and long pad life for both sprint and endurance circuit racing. PAGID also lists RSC 3 as a ceramic-disc race compound with high friction and a lower fiber content. Brembo describes its ceramic-based racing solution as combining durability, low wear and a wide operating range. Use only a pairing approved by both the rotor and pad manufacturers.
How the three choices compare
| Decision factor | Endurance compound | Sprint compound | Ceramic-disc compound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Long races, extended stints and multi-hour testing | Qualifying, short races and high-intensity sessions | Racing on carbon-ceramic or ceramic-composite rotors |
| Pedal character | Stable torque, progressive bite and easy modulation | Sharper initial response; torque curve varies by formula | Must be matched to the ceramic rotor’s surface and temperature behavior |
| Wear priority | Low and predictable pad and disc wear | Maximum response takes priority over service life | Rotor protection and approved transfer layer are critical |
| Cold behavior | Usually intended to remain controllable across a broad stint, but the exact range is compound-specific | May have a narrower low-temperature comfort zone unless the manufacturer says otherwise | Compound-specific; do not infer behavior from an iron-disc version |
| Friction data | DIXCEL R23C average μ 0.30–0.35 | DIXCEL R79C initial μ 0.40; average μ 0.40–0.48 | No universal value; use the approved pad-and-rotor specification |
| Best selection test | Temperature stability, wear rate and consistency over the full stint | Initial bite, release and high-temperature response over the planned session | Rotor approval, transfer behavior and ceramic-system temperature limits |
The DIXCEL figures are manufacturer-specific test values. They are not a grading scale that proves R79C is universally stronger than R23C, nor can they be compared directly with another company’s μ measurement without identical test conditions.

What friction coefficient and temperature should you target?
Friction coefficient, written as μ, is only one part of braking performance. A high number can produce a hard initial hit but may be difficult to modulate, upset the axle balance or increase wear. A lower, stable coefficient can deliver faster lap times when it gives the driver a repeatable release and keeps the ABS in its useful operating range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the manufacturer’s curve, not a single headline number
Ask for the compound’s friction-versus-temperature and torque-versus-pressure information, then compare it with your data. DIXCEL publishes R79C at initial μ 0.40 and average μ 0.40–0.48 for sprint-to-five-hour use, while R23C averages μ 0.30–0.35 for endurance. Those are useful reference points only when the same pad, rotor, pressure, speed and test method apply.
Build a real temperature target
Estimate disc and pad temperatures from data logging, pyrometer checks or the previous compound’s behavior. Look at the hottest corner, the temperature after a representative heavy stop and the recovery temperature at the end of a lap. A compound that is stable at its normal operating temperature is preferable to one with a higher advertised peak that repeatedly runs outside its effective window.

Ferodo’s Car Racing Leaflet documents stable performance up to 750°C under its stated pressure and speed conditions. That is a test-context limit for the cited Ferodo material, not a universal safe temperature for every pad, rotor or caliper. Do not use 750°C as a target unless the specific manufacturer gives the same limit for your compound and hardware.
How to choose a compound for your car
- Identify the rotor material. Confirm whether the disc is iron or steel, carbon-ceramic, or another ceramic composite. Record the disc manufacturer’s approved pad list. Never assume a pad labeled “ceramic” is suitable merely because its name contains the word ceramic.
- Confirm the exact caliper and pad shape. Match the backing-plate dimensions, abutment points, thickness, wear sensor provision and retaining hardware. Racing catalogs often list several shapes that look similar but do not interchange safely.
- Define the event. For long stints or endurance races, start with an endurance formulation. For qualifying, sprint races or short aggressive sessions, start with a sprint formulation. If the event mixes both, prioritize the stint that determines the result and verify that the compound survives the longest continuous run.
- Estimate heat and load. Account for vehicle mass, aerodynamic downforce, tire grip, brake-disc diameter and thickness, caliper piston area, cooling-duct capacity, ambient temperature and the number of heavy stops per lap. A heavy GT car with strong aero load can need a different pad from a lighter car using the same caliper shape.
- Check ABS and axle balance. A higher-bite front compound can move the brake balance forward and change ABS intervention. A rear compound with a different release characteristic can make the car unstable on entry. After any compound change, check front/rear temperature spread, ABS activity and lock-up tendency.
- Choose the torque curve, not just μ. Compare initial bite, mid-pedal torque, release behavior and consistency as the pad heats. Drivers who trail-brake deep into a corner may prefer a smoother rise and release even if the peak μ is lower.
- Plan service life. Set a replacement threshold based on remaining friction material, taper, cracks and the manufacturer’s minimum thickness. Endurance pads can reduce changes and disc consumption, while sprint pads may require more frequent inspection.
Bedding and pre-heating before racing
Competition pads do not deliver their intended friction immediately after installation. DIXCEL states that competition-use pads need to be pre-heated before a race to exhibit their full potential. PAGID’s technical information likewise documents repeated moderate stops as part of bedding guidance.
- Install the pads with clean, correctly torqued hardware and verify that the pad can move freely in the caliper without excessive clearance.
- Use the compound maker’s bedding sequence. Where the procedure calls for moderate stops, apply them progressively rather than making a single maximum-effort stop from cold.
- Allow the brakes to reach the specified temperature, then complete the prescribed stops while avoiding a prolonged pedal hold that can imprint the pad on one rotor spot.
- Cool the system by driving at speed without applying the brakes continuously. Do not park with the pedal clamped while the rotors are extremely hot.
- Inspect the transfer layer, pad faces and rotor surface. Look for an even grey or blue-grey film, taper, edge cracking, crumbling or localized deposits. Repeat or stop the process if the manufacturer’s instructions identify a different condition as acceptable.
A bedding procedure is compound-specific. The temperature, number of stops and cooling time for one resin system should not be copied to another without confirmation.

Symptoms that the compound or setup is wrong
- Long pedal after several laps: check fluid boiling, pad knock-back, caliper flex, excessive bearing movement and pad taper before blaming friction material.
- Strong first stop, then rapid fade: the pad may be outside its temperature window, the ducts may be inadequate or the rotor may be too small for the vehicle load.
- Locking one axle or early ABS intervention: recheck front/rear compound balance, tire temperatures, brake-pressure bias and ABS calibration.
- Judder or vibration after bedding: inspect rotor runout, thickness variation and uneven transfer deposits. A new pad will not cure a mechanically distorted disc.
- Rapid pad taper or edge cracks: inspect caliper alignment, piston retraction, pad guides, cooling distribution and minimum rotor thickness.
- No bite when cold: confirm that a sprint compound has not been selected for a session that never brings the brakes into its operating window.
- Unexpected rotor wear on ceramic discs: stop using the combination and verify explicit approval from both pad and rotor manufacturers.
Examples of compounds and their documented roles
| Compound | Documented role | Useful selection note |
|---|---|---|
| PAGID Racing RSL 1E | Endurance-oriented; PAGID claims up to 20% longer pad life | Consider when stint length and wear control outweigh the strongest initial bite |
| Race Technologies RE10 | Professional endurance compound emphasizing consistency, low wear and stable braking | Consider for long sessions where torque stability is the primary requirement |
| Race Technologies RA70 | Advanced sprint compound with aggressive bite | Consider for short, high-intensity use when immediate response is desired |
| Race Technologies RS45 | High-friction sprint compound | Evaluate its torque curve and axle effect rather than choosing on μ alone |
| DIXCEL R23C | Endurance; average μ 0.30–0.35 and high-temperature stability | Use the published range only as the R23C manufacturer’s test reference |
| DIXCEL R79C | Sprint-to-five-hour use; initial μ 0.40 and average μ 0.40–0.48 | Confirm that its stronger response suits your ABS and balance settings |
| PAGID Racing RSC 2 | Ceramic-composite-disc sprint/endurance compound with medium-high friction, fade resistance and long pad life | Use only with an approved ceramic-disc pairing |
| Brembo RB-340 | Versatile GT compound with good initial bite, linear torque, modulation and stable performance through life; documented for endurance and sprint events | A broad-use option when one car runs both event formats, subject to exact fitment and rotor approval |
Practical decision rule
For a multi-hour race, start with the endurance option that keeps torque and pedal feel stable through the longest stint, then verify wear and disc condition. For qualifying or a short sprint, choose the sprint compound whose bite and release match the driver, provided the brake system reaches its operating temperature quickly and remains inside its fade limit. For carbon-ceramic or ceramic-composite rotors, ignore generic iron-disc recommendations and select from the rotor maker’s approved ceramic-system compounds.
Before ordering, recheck the manufacturer’s current catalog, exact pad shape and availability. Catalogs and marketplace stock change, and a physically similar backing plate is not proof of fitment.
