The Qatar-gifted Boeing 747-8 used as a temporary presidential aircraft is undergoing reported interior “cosmetic upgrades,” according to an administration source cited by ABC News on October 2, 2026. The White House had not said whether the work also includes security changes or when the jet would return to service. Its documented flights as Air Force One ran from July 1 to September 16—77 days apart—but those dates do not establish its exact service duration.
What is happening to the Qatar-gifted 747-8?
ABC News reported on October 2 that an administration source described the current work as interior “cosmetic upgrades.” The White House had not responded to questions about the work’s scope, whether it includes security upgrades, or when the aircraft will return. The description is attributed to that source; it does not establish that the job is exclusively cosmetic. ABC News reported the status and unanswered questions.

The jet is a temporary bridge aircraft, not one of the two newer Boeing aircraft intended for the permanent presidential fleet. It was donated by Qatar and converted for presidential use. The available reporting does not establish when the current work began, so the gap between its last documented trip and the October report should not be treated as a confirmed grounding date.
How short was its documented period of use?
The dates indicate a short interval, but not a verified total time in service. The Associated Press reported that the aircraft’s first flight as Air Force One was July 1. ABC News identified September 16 as its last documented trip: the two dates are 77 days apart. ABC also said the exact date it entered service was unclear. The interval between those documented trips is therefore a useful measure of its known use, not an official service-duration figure. AP reported the July 1 first flight; ABC reported the September 16 last documented trip and the uncertainty over the start date.

ABC reported that the aircraft flew Trump to Ireland from September 11 to 13, its first international trip since the July aircraft swap following the NATO summit in Turkey. After September 16, the president used the older aircraft for later domestic trips and a New York visit. Those trip records do not show when the retrofit started.
What did officials say about the upgrade schedule?
The earlier White House estimate
In July, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the aircraft was “perfectly safe for the President’s travels” and would receive additional upgrades and enhancements in the fall, expected to take approximately one month. The White House said Trump would use the older aircraft during the work. That was an estimate made in July, not a confirmed schedule for the current work. Trump’s later description
Trump later described the planned work as taking about 60 days to “max out” the aircraft. He said: “It’s going to be maxed out. Yeah, it’s going to go away and — to make magnificent plane. Interior wise, the best. Engines, the best.” That was his description of the plan, not a technical work specification or a current return date. As of ABC News’s October 2 report, no completion or return-to-service date had been given publicly. ABC News reported Trump’s remarks and the lack of a confirmed return date.
What is known about the cabin—and what is not?
AP described plush carpets, lie-flat seats and wood paneling in the aircraft’s cabin, and said the Air Force changed little of the original layout during the conversion. The more specific descriptions in some reports—reporter massage seats, decorative bookcases and a grand staircase—are not independently itemized in the October account of the current work. ABC’s phrase “cosmetic upgrades” does not say which cabin features are being changed. AP described the cabin and conversion.

Reports on the aircraft’s defensive and communications capabilities require careful attribution. AP’s account said the Air Force left out several complex engineering modifications intended for the final Air Force One aircraft and described some missile-detection and countermeasure systems visible on older aircraft as absent from the bridge aircraft. The Air Force, in turn, said the conversion was completed “without accepting any risk regarding security, safety, or secure communications.” These public statements do not establish what systems are currently being installed, or prove that the October work addresses a particular deficiency. How does the bridge aircraft fit into the presidential fleet?
The donated 747-8 is intended to bridge the gap until two newer Boeing aircraft for the permanent fleet are available, expected in 2028 at the earliest, according to AP. AP described the gifted aircraft as valued at $400 million; ABC also reported that figure and described the aircraft as approximately 14 years old. The reported valuation is not a purchase price paid by its current operator. AP reported the bridge role, expected timing and valuation; ABC reported the aircraft’s age and valuation.
The aircraft’s short documented run, luxurious cabin and reported upgrades have prompted questions about readiness and capability. But the public information does not provide a technical inventory of the October work. Until the White House or Air Force clarifies its scope and timing, it is not possible to say what changed, whether security systems are part of the job, or when the aircraft will fly again.
