Which SUV sold more in 2026?
Through August 2026, the CR-V led the RAV4 in reported U.S. year-to-date sales by 82,584 vehicles. The comparison is for January through August, not the full calendar year.

These model-level figures are from GoodCarBadCar, a sales-data compilation, rather than either automaker’s own sales release. Its August figures also show the CR-V ahead for that month. In a July 1, 2026 release, American Honda reported more than 226,114 CR-V sales in the first half of the year and said hybrids made up 55% of those sales. The same release quoted American Honda vice president of auto sales Lance Woelfer discussing affordability and the appeal of fuel efficiency across Honda and Acura, with hybrids accounting for about 30% of Honda sales. His remarks addressed the broader brands, not specifically why the CR-V led the RAV4, so they do not establish a cause for the two models’ different sales trends.
Does “for the first time since 1991” check out?
Not on the evidence available. Honda says the CR-V debuted in Japan in 1995 and U.S. sales began in 1997. That makes the phrase “CR-V beat the RAV4 for the first time since 1991” unclear if it is intended to describe U.S. sales of these two models: a U.S. CR-V-versus-RAV4 comparison cannot cover years before the CR-V was sold in the country. Honda’s Digital FactBook does include U.S. sales figures for 1991, but the relevant table is at the manufacturer level. It does not provide the model-by-model CR-V and RAV4 history needed to prove a head-to-head result dating back to that year. What the sales lead does—and does not—say
The figures establish that the CR-V had more reported U.S. sales than the RAV4 through August 2026, with the models moving in opposite year-over-year directions in the same compilation. They do not establish the final 2026 ranking, verify a historical streak, or show which SUV is the better choice for a particular buyer. Sales totals are not a substitute for a comparison of price, powertrains, fuel economy, safety and equipment.
