Porsche’s all-electric Cayenne Turbo Electric has a steering-wheel push-to-pass function that adds 130 kW (176 PS) for up to 10 seconds, while Launch Control can deliver 1,156 PS and 1,500 Nm for a claimed 0–100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. Lucid’s three-row Gravity Grand Touring shows the same trend from a family-car angle: 828 hp, 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds and up to 450 miles of EPA-estimated range.
The important distinction is that these are different performance states, not power figures available continuously. Normal output, temporary boost and launch performance are managed separately by software, battery controls, motors, cooling systems and traction control.

The SUV with a push-to-pass button
The clearest example is Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo Electric. A steering-wheel push-to-pass control temporarily adds 130 kW, equivalent to 176 PS, for as long as 10 seconds. It is intended as an on-demand burst rather than a new permanent power rating.
In practical terms, the driver can request a short acceleration reserve for an overtake or a fast merge without leaving the normal driving mode. Once the timed window ends, the vehicle returns to its ordinary output strategy. Porsche’s published figure is a maximum under specified conditions; it should not be read as a promise that the extra power can be summoned repeatedly without regard to battery temperature, state of charge or other operating limits.

What Launch Control changes
Launch Control is a standing-start system, not the same thing as push-to-pass. It coordinates motor torque, battery discharge, traction control and the tires’ available grip to produce the quickest initial acceleration. Porsche rates the Cayenne Turbo Electric at up to 1,156 PS and 1,500 Nm, with 0–100 km/h in 2.5 seconds when Launch Control is used.
The regular Cayenne Electric illustrates why the mode matters. Porsche lists 300 kW (408 PS) in normal operation and 325 kW (442 PS) with Launch Control. Those two numbers describe different operating states, so quoting only the higher figure can give a misleading impression of the power available during routine driving.

How an electric SUV can produce supercar acceleration
Electric motors can deliver very high torque from very low speed and do not need conventional gear changes to build thrust. Software can therefore reserve a higher output state for a launch sequence or a button press, then meter that output through the all-wheel-drive system.

The SUV body helps accommodate the hardware. A large floor-mounted battery, front and rear drive units, cooling equipment and a strong high-voltage electrical system can fit beneath a tall passenger compartment. That packaging also leaves room for family seating and cargo. The connection between those components and the published performance is an engineering explanation of the architecture; it does not mean every electric SUV has the same reserves or controls.
How quick is the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric?
Porsche’s 2026 product information gives the Cayenne Turbo Electric a peak rating of 1,156 PS and 1,500 Nm. With Launch Control, its claimed 0–100 km/h time is 2.5 seconds. That is a manufacturer figure for the specified model and test conditions, not a universal result for every Cayenne Electric version.
The temporary push-to-pass system is a separate feature. Its 130 kW (176 PS) addition lasts up to 10 seconds, so it is most relevant when the SUV is already moving. A driver using the car for commuting will generally experience the normal power calibration rather than the maximum launch state.

Can a three-row EV be as quick as a supercar?
Lucid’s Gravity Grand Touring demonstrates how close a family SUV can get. It uses dual motors and all-wheel drive, is rated at 828 hp and is claimed to reach 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Lucid also quotes up to 450 miles of EPA-estimated range, making the vehicle’s brief acceleration headline part of a longer-distance touring package rather than a track-only specification.

That comparison needs a test-standard warning. Lucid’s range figure is EPA-estimated and expressed in miles, while Porsche cites up to 642 km of stated range in its Cayenne Electric material, using a European test context. EPA and WLTP results are not interchangeable, and neither figure guarantees the same distance in cold weather, at highway speeds or with a full passenger and cargo load.

Why charging architecture matters as much as horsepower
Extreme acceleration draws heavily on the battery and power electronics, so charging capability and thermal management are part of the performance story. Porsche cites charging at up to 400 kW and a stated range of 642 km for the Cayenne Electric. Lucid describes Gravity’s 900V architecture and voltage-boost charging capability, which are designed to support high-power charging across compatible infrastructure.

Maximum charging rates are not guaranteed at every station or throughout every charging session. The charger, battery temperature, state of charge and local electrical conditions determine the rate the vehicle actually accepts. A high peak number is therefore best understood as a capability under compatible conditions, not a constant rate from empty to full.

Usually, the value is not that a driver can use peak output all day. The benefit is a wide performance envelope: effortless merging, strong acceleration with passengers aboard and immediate response without a downshift. A temporary button can also make the extra capability easy to access when a short burst is genuinely useful.

Repeated launches and high-power bursts can increase battery and motor temperatures, and the control software may reduce output after heat builds up or charge falls. Tire grip, road surface and weather can matter more than the headline rating. These effects are normal consequences of managing a high-output electric drivetrain; the published peak figure should not be treated as a guarantee of identical performance on every attempt.

What buyers should check before treating the numbers as equivalent
- Output state: distinguish normal power, a timed push-to-pass boost and Launch Control power.
- Acceleration test: Porsche quotes 0–100 km/h, while Lucid quotes 0–60 mph; the tests are not identical.
- Range standard: keep EPA estimates separate from European/WLTP-style figures.
- Repeatability: ask how performance changes with battery temperature, charge level and repeated use.
- Charging conditions: a 400 kW or 900V capability still requires compatible equipment and a battery in the right temperature window.
- Family utility: verify seating and cargo needs independently; only Gravity’s three-row layout is specified in the figures above.
The direction luxury EV SUVs are taking
These vehicles are blending two traditionally separate roles. Their tall bodies, large batteries and family interiors make them practical tourers, while software-controlled power reserves give them the launch response and driver controls once reserved for exotic cars.
Lucid CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson described the approach this way: “The Gravity SUV represents a significant leap forward in Lucid’s world-leading technology and design.” The broader lesson is measurable in the specifications: supercar-like acceleration is no longer limited to a low two-seat body, but the fastest numbers remain conditional modes rather than everyday operating output.
