Why did Punjab and Islamabad announce free transport?
On 3 April 2026, petrol was reported at Rs458.41 per litre after an increase of Rs137.23, while high-speed diesel reached Rs520.35 per litre after an increase of Rs184.49. These are prices reported at the time, not verified current prices. The News, 3 April 2026
The fuel shock was already affecting fares. The Ministry of Planning said National Price Monitoring Committee officials reported transport fares in major urban centres had risen by an average of 25–30%, with some routes increasing by as much as 50%. Did the free-fare announcement cover every bus and route?
Not necessarily. Punjab’s announcement named four services, and the available reports do not establish that every private bus, route or intercity service was included. Islamabad’s announcement used the broader phrase “all public transport,” but the report does not provide a route-by-route or operator-by-operator list. The two jurisdictions therefore should not be treated as having identical coverage or durations.
How did Punjab control fares on other services?
On 7 April, Dawn reported that Punjab rejected a proposed 37% public-transport fare increase and set ceilings of up to 25% for diesel-based transport and up to 10% for petrol-based public service vehicles. Those percentages were maximum permitted increases, not automatic fare rises for every route or vehicle category. The April 2026 announcements do not establish current fare policy. Islamabad’s specified 30-day period began on 4 April; the subsequent Punjab report described a month-long free period for Metro Bus and electric buses. The sources cited here do not confirm that either measure was extended or remains in effect on 8 October 2026. Check the relevant transport authority or operator for current fares before travelling.
