AC charging is usually the practical choice when your car will be parked for a while; DC fast charging is intended for a quicker en-route stop. Neither label guarantees a particular speed. The car’s charging capability, the station’s available output and the conditions during the session all set the result. Before you start, verify the selected point’s live availability, connector and complete price—including any mobility-service or roaming fees.

AC versus DC: what changes for the driver?

AC and DC describe how electricity reaches the vehicle. With AC, the car’s onboard charger converts alternating current into the direct current the battery stores. The onboard charger therefore places a ceiling on the rate, even when an AC post advertises a higher figure. With DC, the station supplies direct current through the vehicle’s charging system, so the car’s DC acceptance limit and the station’s available output become the main constraints.

Public AC charging

AC points are commonly installed where a car is expected to remain parked: residential streets, town-centre car parks, workplaces and destinations. They suit a driver who can leave the vehicle connected while shopping, working or visiting. The useful question is not “How fast is this post?” but “How much energy will my car accept during the time I am parked?”

Public DC fast charging

DC charging is generally chosen when reducing stop time matters on a journey. A DC point can still deliver less than its headline rating if the vehicle accepts less, the site is sharing capacity, or the battery-management system reduces power. Public DC points deployed under the EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) must have fixed cables from 14 April 2025. That rule does not establish the cable arrangement of every public AC point.

What the headline kW means A ceiling for the point, not a promise to your car A ceiling for the point, not a promise to your car

There is no universally better mode. Choose the one that matches your parking time, route and vehicle specification.

Why the displayed charging speed is not the speed you get

The vehicle may be the limiting factor

Check the vehicle manual or manufacturer specification for separate maximum AC and DC acceptance rates. An AC post can advertise more power than the onboard charger can use. Likewise, a high-output DC unit cannot force the battery to accept more than the car’s approved rate.

Power changes during a session

Charging is managed continuously rather than delivered at one fixed rate. The car can request less power as the battery’s state of charge rises, and the station can adjust output to protect equipment or balance its available capacity. Battery temperature, the vehicle’s charging settings and the condition of the battery also affect the request. Consequently, the power shown at the beginning of a session may not match the average over the whole session.

The site can affect the result

Two points with the same printed rating can perform differently. A site may divide capacity between simultaneous stalls, apply a temporary limit, or have a local connection that cannot provide the theoretical maximum at that moment. Treat the rating as the point’s upper capability under specified conditions, not as a guaranteed delivery rate.

Use charging curves, not a single kW number

If you need predictable journey planning, look for your vehicle’s published charging curve or timing guidance, then compare it with the selected point’s rating. The relevant measure is how much usable energy can be added during your planned stop, not the maximum number printed on the cabinet.

How to find a suitable public charging point

Start with live point data

NDW manages the DOT-NL platform for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. It provides data services with public charging-point location, price and availability information. DOT-NL is a data platform rather than a consumer app, so drivers normally encounter these data through a charging-location service or mobility application that uses them.

Match the point to the stop

  • For a destination where you will stay for an hour or more, search public AC first and confirm the vehicle’s AC limit.
  • For a motorway or intercity journey, filter for DC capability and check that the vehicle can use the point’s connector and power range.
  • Check the point’s live status immediately before departure and again when you arrive; availability can change between those moments.
  • Look for the exact tariff attached to that point and the payment method you intend to use.

Check the physical details

Confirm the connector type, whether the cable is attached, stall access, opening restrictions and any parking rules shown in the point listing. A Type 2 cable is relevant at an untethered AC point, but compatibility depends on the vehicle and the station. Do not assume that an AC point supplies a cable simply because a nearby DC point does.

Identify every possible charge

  • Energy charge: the amount billed for electricity, commonly expressed per kilowatt-hour.
  • Occupancy or time charge: an amount linked to minutes connected or occupying the bay; it can apply alongside an energy price.
  • Session or start fee: a fixed amount added when charging begins, where the selected provider applies one.
  • Mobility-service or roaming fee: a provider’s additional charge when its card or app accesses another operator’s point.
  • Subscription conditions: a plan may alter the price, but the price shown for your actual session remains the one to verify.

What AFIR requires

AFIR requires public charging access to support ad-hoc payment, with the exact payment arrangements depending on the point and when it was deployed. It also requires prices to be reasonable, transparent, comparable and non-discriminatory. At public points rated at 50 kW or more, the ad-hoc price must be based on the amount of energy supplied; an operator may additionally apply an occupancy fee per minute.

Mobility service providers must present session-specific price information before charging, including applicable roaming costs and other fees. In practice, open the point details, select the payment method you will actually use, and inspect the final tariff before authorising the session.

Why checking first matters

The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) made price clarity a consumer issue in its 2020 guidance. ACM Consumer Department Director Edwin van Houten said: “As more and more people purchase electric cars, it becomes even more important that rates for charging electric cars are clear. People will then be able to make well-informed decisions.” That guidance predates AFIR; AFIR is the current EU framework for the requirements described above.

Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) reported in its National Charging Survey 2025 that 28% of EV drivers usually did not know what public charging near home cost, while nearly 80% considered advance tariff information important. The survey included more than 4,500 respondents, so these are reported survey findings rather than a measurement of every Dutch driver.

Do you need your own charging cable?

It depends on the point. Public DC points must have fixed cables under AFIR from 14 April 2025. Public AC points are not covered by that same blanket fixed-cable requirement: some are tethered and others are untethered sockets. The point listing and the physical sign at the bay should tell you which arrangement applies.

If the AC point is untethered

  1. Check your vehicle documentation for the compatible AC cable and connector.
  2. Confirm that the point accepts that connector and the cable length will reach safely.
  3. Carry the cable in the vehicle and inspect it for damage before use.
  4. Connect the vehicle and point as instructed by the station; do not leave a loose cable where pedestrians or other cars can catch it.

A Type 2 charging cable is a common accessory for an untethered AC point, but do not buy or borrow one without checking your car and the selected station.

A reliable process for starting a charging session

  1. Plan the energy need. Use the vehicle’s trip estimate and charging guidance to decide whether an AC destination stop or a DC en-route stop fits the journey.
  2. Search the exact area. Use a service that shows current point status, then confirm the connector, output and access conditions.
  3. Open the tariff details. Select the card, app or other payment route you intend to use. Read the energy price, time or occupancy fee, session fee and roaming or mobility-service charges.
  4. Check cable provision. Bring a compatible Type 2 cable when the AC point is untethered; use the fixed cable at a compliant public DC point.
  5. Inspect the bay on arrival. Verify the point number, connector label and any parking restriction before plugging in.
  6. Authorise and confirm. Start the session using the displayed payment method and check that the vehicle reports that charging has begun.
  7. Monitor the session. Watch the vehicle or service display for delivered energy, current power and any fault message. Remember that power can taper as the battery fills.
  8. End the session correctly. Stop charging through the vehicle or point instructions, unplug safely and move the car when finished so the space is available.
  9. Keep the receipt. Save the digital or printed record showing the point, time, energy and amount charged in case the final amount differs from what was displayed.

Common problems and practical fixes

The point is marked available but will not start

Recheck the point identifier and connector, confirm that your payment method is accepted, and follow the station’s start sequence. If the point remains unavailable, use the live map to select another point rather than repeatedly authorising failed sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The car charges more slowly than the label

Compare the vehicle’s maximum accepted AC or DC rate with the point rating, then check the battery’s state of charge and temperature. If another vehicle is sharing the site, available power may be divided. A falling rate later in the session can be normal charging management rather than a fault.

The price is higher than expected

Review the receipt against the pre-session tariff and identify whether an occupancy, start, roaming or other provider fee was added. If the displayed price was unclear or the billed components do not match the information shown before authorisation, retain screenshots or receipts and contact the mobility provider or point operator.

You arrived without the required cable

Do not force a connection or use an incompatible lead. Search for a tethered AC point or a public DC point with its fixed cable, and check the new point’s tariff before starting.

What the Dutch charging network figures tell you

RVO reported 183,704 public charging points for 2024, a 25% increase, in a release dated 21 May 2025. This is a historical network count reported in 2025, not a live total for 2026. It indicates broad availability but does not tell you whether a particular point is free, compatible with your vehicle or attractively priced.

The Government of the Netherlands’ report Dutch BEV policy in an international perspective, published 18 July 2025, compares sales, fleet size, policy and charging infrastructure. It provides national context, but it does not establish a live 2026 count of AC and DC points or a national average tariff. For a journey decision, the selected point’s current status and price remain more useful than a national headline.

Quick checks for visitors and regular Dutch drivers

  • Have the vehicle manual or manufacturer specifications available for maximum AC and DC input.
  • Check whether your payment card, app or mobility service works at the chosen operator and what roaming fee it adds.
  • For AC, verify whether the point is tethered; carry a compatible Type 2 cable if it is not.
  • For DC, expect a fixed station cable at public points covered by the 14 April 2025 AFIR requirement.
  • Read the point-specific tariff before authorising, including any per-minute occupancy charge.
  • Allow for a changing charging rate instead of planning around the station’s maximum printed kW.
  • Save the receipt and point reference until the charge has settled.
