Among the modern production-car examples documented here, the 2014 SRT Viper’s 8.390-litre V10 is larger by displacement than the 8.0-litre W16 in the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron. Guinness World Records identifies the Viper engine as the largest in a car it describes as then in series production; that record-page claim is not a comprehensive all-time ranking.
What counts as a production-car engine?
This comparison counts engines installed by the automaker in road-going cars built in a series or documented production run. It does not count an engine simply because it is sold separately for installation: Chevrolet’s 10.4-litre ZZ632/1000, for example, is a crate engine, not evidence of a production car that left the factory with it.
Production status can include limited runs. Bugatti’s history documents a decision to put the Veyron into series production, but the available evidence does not define one universal minimum number of cars for a model to qualify. That makes an explicit scope more useful than treating every use of “production” as equivalent.

| Bugatti Veyron | 8.0 L | W16; series production was decided in 2001 | Bugatti records an original output of 1,001 PS. Bugatti Newsroom |
| Bugatti Chiron | 8.0 L | W16; production model | Bugatti says output began at 1,500 PS and later reached 1,600 PS in specified versions. Bugatti Newsroom |
| Chevrolet ZZ632/1000 | 10.4 L | Big-block crate engine; not a production-car entry | Chevrolet lists it as a crate engine. The same catalogue lists 9.4-litre 572 offerings. Chevrolet Performance |
Why the Viper’s bigger engine is not the more powerful one
Displacement measures the volume swept by an engine’s pistons; it is not a measure of power. The Viper’s 8.390 litres exceeds the Bugatti W16’s 8.0 litres, but the documented Bugatti output figures are much higher: the Veyron’s original 1,001 PS, and 1,500 PS initially for the Chiron, rising to 1,600 PS in specified versions. Those figures describe different models and versions, so they should not be read as a direct, same-condition test. The Viper’s Guinness listing gives 640 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque.

Keep the measures separate when comparing engines: displacement describes size, horsepower or kilowatts describe power, and torque describes twisting force. A larger engine does not by itself guarantee greater output.
Is the Viper the all-time production-car champion?
The Guinness page calls the Viper the largest engine installed in any car then in series production, and identifies the vehicle as a 2014 SRT Viper. Its displayed title uses the phrase “currently in use,” while the page body refers to a car “currently in series production.” Guinness also cautions that records can change and that updates are not published immediately. The record is therefore best understood as that page’s claim and context, not proof of an unqualified all-time winner.

- Movable elements: mask and door
- Officially licensed model
- Perfect detailing
- Ideal for model collectors
The available documentation supports a comparison of selected examples, not a complete historical ranking. An Autocar page titled “The cars with the largest engines ever made” surfaced historical names including the Rolls-Royce L Series, Bugatti Royale and Bentley 8-Litre, but its full contents could not be retrieved. Those names cannot be responsibly ordered here by displacement or treated as verified entries in a definitive list. Autocar’s overview is a lead, not sufficient evidence for a ranked historical table.

Chevrolet’s catalogue illustrates the category distinction: it lists 9.4-litre 572 engines and a 10.4-litre ZZ632/1000 as crate-engine products. Their displacement is greater than the Viper’s, but an engine sold separately does not establish that a production car left its factory equipped with it. Counting such engines alongside factory-installed car engines would answer a different question.
