A heavy sedan can beat a supercar in a specific acceleration test when its engine makes enough power, its gearing is favorable, and its tires and drivetrain can transmit that power more effectively. Power-to-weight ratio is the useful first calculation, but it is not a complete performance score. The result depends on the event being measured, the weight definition, traction, launch strategy, gearing, aerodynamics, and test conditions.
What power-to-weight ratio actually measures
Power-to-weight ratio is engine power divided by vehicle mass. It estimates how much rated power is available for each unit of vehicle weight. A higher value generally means greater acceleration potential because the engine has less mass to move for every unit of output.

- hp per kilogram: horsepower divided by mass in kilograms
- pounds per horsepower: vehicle weight in pounds divided by horsepower; lower is better
It is a first-pass indicator, not a direct measurement of speed. The engine must deliver its power through the transmission, final drive, driven wheels and tires. A car with a theoretically excellent ratio can lose time if it spins its tires, shifts slowly, runs out of traction or carries a large aerodynamic penalty.

How to calculate it correctly
Formula in bhp per tonne
Use:
bhp per tonne = horsepower × 1,000 ÷ mass in kilograms
For example, a 2,000 kg car producing 400 bhp has:
400 × 1,000 ÷ 2,000 = 200 bhp per tonne
Formula in hp per kilogram
Use:
hp per kilogram = horsepower ÷ mass in kilograms
The same car produces 400 ÷ 2,000 = 0.20 hp/kg. Multiplying hp/kg by 1,000 gives bhp per tonne.
Formula in pounds per horsepower
Use:
pounds per horsepower = weight in pounds ÷ horsepower
A 4,000 lb car with 500 hp has 4,000 ÷ 500 = 8.0 lb/hp. In this format, the smaller number indicates the stronger power-to-weight result.
Keep the units and weight basis consistent
Do not divide horsepower by kilograms for one vehicle and compare it with pounds per horsepower for another without converting. More importantly, use the same type of mass: curb or kerb weight, dry weight, or a test weight. Dry weight usually excludes equipment and operating fluids that are present in a road-going car. Curb or kerb weight is closer to the vehicle as delivered for normal use. Mixing those definitions can make a light sports car look unfairly advantaged.
Published examples: sedans, sports cars and extreme hypercars
| Vehicle | Power | Listed mass | Mass basis | Power-to-weight figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 7 Series sedan | 394 bhp | 4,733 lb | Curb weight | About 83 bhp per 1,000 lb |
| BMW M3 sedan | 473 bhp | 3,840 lb | Curb weight | About 123 bhp per 1,000 lb |
| McLaren 600LT | 474 bhp | 1,247 kg (2,749 lb) | Dry weight as low as listed | Manufacturer figure: 474 bhp per tonne; direct division of 474 bhp by 1.247 tonnes is about 380 bhp per tonne |
| Lexus LFA | Not stated in the cited specification | 1,480 kg | Kerb weight | 373 bhp per tonne |
| Mercedes-AMG GT R | 577 hp | 3,428 lb | Listed vehicle weight | 5.94 lb per horsepower |
| Koenigsegg One:1 | 1,360 hp | 1,360 kg implied by its stated ratio | Curb-weight ratio claim | 1:1 hp-to-kg |
The 7 Series calculation is 394 ÷ 4.733 = 83.2 bhp per 1,000 lb. The M3 calculation is 473 ÷ 3.840 = 123.2 bhp per 1,000 lb. The M3 therefore has roughly 48% more power per 1,000 lb than the listed 7 Series, despite both being sedans.

The 600LT figures illustrate why specifications need checking before comparison. Its listed 474 bhp and 1,247 kg dry weight calculate to approximately 380 bhp per tonne, while the published specification quotes 474 bhp per tonne. That quoted ratio must have been calculated from a different rated-power or configuration basis; it should not be combined casually with the 474 bhp figure and then treated as a single measured result.

Mercedes lists the AMG GT R at 577 hp, 5.94 lb per horsepower and an estimated 3.5-second 0-to-60-mph time. Koenigsegg describes the One:1 as having a 1:1 horsepower-to-kilogram curb-weight ratio, with 1,360 hp and 1,371 Nm. That is an extreme reference point, not a realistic sedan target.
Why a heavy sedan can beat a supercar
“Beat” must describe a specific event
A 0-to-60-mph sprint, 0-to-100-km/h run, rolling acceleration test, quarter mile and circuit lap measure different abilities. A sedan might win a standing-start launch yet lose a high-speed roll or a race involving braking and corners. There is no universal result called “beating a supercar.”
Power can offset mass
Mass hurts acceleration, but additional engine output can compensate. The BMW examples show the principle: the 473-bhp M3 has a much stronger ratio than the 394-bhp 7 Series even though both carry sedan bodies. If a large sedan has a ratio close to, or better than, an older sports car, its straight-line performance can be competitive.
Traction decides whether the ratio is usable
Power-to-weight describes potential at the engine. The tires determine how much of that potential reaches the road. All-wheel drive can distribute launch force across more contact patches. A suitable tire compound, an effective limited-slip differential and a surface with adequate grip can matter more than a small difference in calculated ratio during the first seconds of a run.
Launch control and transmission calibration matter
A modern sedan may use launch control, rapid shifts and carefully chosen gear ratios. Those systems keep the engine in its useful power band and reduce wheelspin. A supercar with a higher theoretical ratio can lose a short sprint if its launch is traction-limited, its gearbox shifts less effectively or its driver cannot reproduce the ideal start.

Torque delivery changes the result
Horsepower is the headline figure, but the shape of the torque curve determines how force arrives at the wheels. A broad torque band can make a car easier to launch and quicker between shifts than a vehicle that produces its peak output only near the top of the rev range. Final-drive and individual gear ratios then multiply wheel torque and influence the acceleration available at each speed.
Age and specification can reverse expectations
“Supercar” describes a category, not one fixed level of technology. A new performance sedan can have a newer engine, more effective software, better tires and a faster transmission than an older supercar. Conversely, a lightly loaded, well-prepared supercar on ideal tires may dominate the same sedan. The badges alone do not settle the comparison.
Does horsepower matter more than weight?
Neither number is meaningful in isolation for acceleration. Power determines how quickly the car can continue gaining speed; weight determines how much mass that power must accelerate. Their relationship is why the ratio is useful.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAbsolute horsepower still matters at higher speeds. Aerodynamic drag rises sharply with speed, so a car needs substantial power to overcome air resistance even if its mass is low. Weight matters especially during launch, braking and direction changes. A heavy car can have a strong ratio while still requiring more tire force and more energy to stop.
For a road comparison, ask three separate questions:
- How much power is available per unit of mass?
- Can the tires transmit that power without excessive wheelspin?
- Is the event dominated by acceleration, aerodynamic drag, braking or cornering?
The answer to the first question is the ratio. The other two explain why the ratio cannot predict every result.

Why a worse ratio can still produce a faster car
Better launch grip
A car with a lower ratio may leave the line harder if it has all-wheel drive, more suitable tires or a better-controlled launch. The advantage is greatest in a short standing-start test, where the first several car lengths can decide the result.

More effective gearing
Two cars with the same engine output can accelerate differently if one keeps the engine closer to its strongest operating range. A lower numerical ratio can be offset by shorter gearing, quicker shifts or a final drive that delivers more wheel torque in the tested speed range.
Different test conditions
Temperature, road surface, fuel load, tire temperature, wind, altitude, rollout method and measurement equipment all affect acceleration. BMW explicitly warns that real acceleration varies with specification, road and environmental conditions, testing procedures and driving style. Manufacturer times should therefore be read as claims for a stated configuration, not as universal guarantees.
A different definition of weight
A dry supercar figure and a sedan’s curb weight are not an apples-to-apples comparison. Add fuel, fluids, options and occupants and the real mass in a test can move substantially. Always identify whether each number is dry, curb, kerb or test weight.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Power-to-weight is not a cornering or braking score
A strong ratio does not tell you how quickly a car can stop, how much lateral grip it has or how rapidly it can change direction. Braking depends on tire grip, brake hardware, temperature and mass distribution. Cornering depends on tires, suspension geometry, body control, aerodynamic load and the driver’s line. A lighter vehicle generally has an advantage in transient response even when two vehicles share the same ratio.
Gordon Murray Automotive makes the distinction directly in its T.50 press material: “A heavy car can never deliver the dynamic attributes of a lighter car – even if it has the same power to weight ratio.” That statement is about broader dynamics, not a claim that a heavy car cannot win one acceleration run.

How to compare a sedan with a supercar fairly
- Define the event. State whether the comparison is 0-to-60 mph, 0-to-100 km/h, a rolling pull, quarter mile or circuit lap.
- Standardize units. Convert both vehicles to bhp per tonne, hp per kilogram or pounds per horsepower.
- Match the weight basis. Compare curb with curb, kerb with kerb or dry with dry. If you cannot, label the mismatch prominently.
- Show the arithmetic. Divide the stated power by the stated mass rather than repeating a rounded marketing number.
- Record the hardware that delivers power. Note driven wheels, tire specification, transmission type, launch system, gear ratios and torque characteristics.
- Match the conditions. Account for surface, temperature, fuel and occupant load, rollout and test procedure.
- Separate claims from measurements. Manufacturer acceleration figures describe a stated configuration. An instrumented test under controlled conditions is needed for a definitive ranking.
What is a good power-to-weight ratio?
There is no single cutoff that makes a car “good.” The right benchmark depends on body style, drivetrain, tires, gearing, aerodynamics and intended use. The examples provide useful reference points rather than universal classes:
- The BMW 7 Series example works out to about 83 bhp per 1,000 lb.
- The BMW M3 example works out to about 123 bhp per 1,000 lb.
- The Lexus LFA is listed at 373 bhp per tonne.
- The McLaren 600LT specification quotes 474 bhp per tonne, but its listed power and dry-weight figures do not reproduce that number directly.
- The Koenigsegg One:1’s 1:1 hp-to-kg figure is an extreme hypercar benchmark, not a normal road-car target.
Use these figures to compare vehicles in the same class and under the same measurement rules. A ratio that looks modest on paper can still deliver rapid acceleration when traction and gearing are well matched.
A practical calculator checklist
For your own car, collect the exact engine output and the exact mass for the trim being tested. Then:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Write down whether the output is hp or bhp and whether the mass is in kilograms or pounds.
- Convert both vehicles to the same system.
- Apply one formula consistently.
- Keep the result to one decimal place until the final comparison.
- Record drivetrain, tires, transmission and the acceleration event beside the ratio.
If a specification sheet gives only a rounded marketing ratio, calculate it independently and investigate any mismatch. A discrepancy can indicate a different power rating, a different vehicle configuration or a different definition of weight.
The bottom line
Power-to-weight ratio explains how a heavy sedan can beat a supercar without overturning basic physics: sufficient power can offset mass, and superior traction, launch control, gearing and tires can make that power more effective. The ratio predicts acceleration potential, not a guaranteed race result. A fair comparison uses the same units, the same weight basis, the same event and comparable conditions, then treats braking and cornering as separate questions.
