At the time, the spy photos prompted speculation that the prototype might preview a new Speedster—or a GT3 Cabriolet. Porsche’s April 2026 announcement confirms an open-top, manual-only GT3 for the 2027 model year, not the identity of that earlier mule.
What did the 2025 Porsche test vehicle look like?
Road & Track reported on July 24, 2025, that photos posted by Instagram user @flachtstory showed a 911 test mule with a Carrera Cabriolet soft top and front fenders resembling those on the 911 S/T. The car had GT3-like cues, but a photograph of a development vehicle does not by itself establish what model Porsche was developing.
Road & Track considered a Speedster the likelier explanation while acknowledging another possibility: a GT3 Cabriolet. The Drive also interpreted the prototype as likely a Speedster in a July 29, 2025 report. Those were media interpretations, not Porsche announcements. Road & Track’s July 2025 report and The Drive’s coverage captured the speculation while it was still speculation.
What has Porsche confirmed since?
On April 14, 2026, Porsche announced the 2027 911 GT3 S/C, describing S/C as “Sport Cabriolet.” It is a two-seat, open-top GT3 powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine and offered only with a six-speed GT Sport manual transmission. Porsche says the model is not limited in production, unlike the 2019 Speedster.

The announcement confirms that Porsche is building an open-top GT3. It does not explicitly identify the 2025 photographed mule as the production S/C. The photos and the later car share the broad idea of an open-top 911 with GT3 associations, but that resemblance is not proof of a direct connection. Porsche’s April 14, 2026 announcement is the primary source for the production car’s name and specifications.

The figures below are Porsche’s specifications for the U.S.-announced 2027 model, rather than independent test results.

Porsche’s release lists a U.S. MSRP of $273,000, excluding a $2,350 delivery, processing, and handling fee. The company said the car was available to order and expected to arrive at U.S. Porsche Centers by fall 2026. Those are dated U.S. terms and timing from the announcement, not a worldwide price or a guarantee of delivery by that date.

The comparison stops where the evidence stops: Porsche has not explicitly tied the pictured prototype to the production S/C, and the cited sources do not establish specifications for a separate new Speedster. The Drive’s discussion of a 2027 model year and possible 2026 debut was a forecast published in July 2025, not confirmation at that time.

Why the distinction matters
A camouflaged or otherwise unusual prototype can suggest a model direction without revealing the final production name or specification. In this case, later news made one part of the speculation concrete: Porsche did announce a production open-top GT3. But that later confirmation does not turn the earlier guess about the mule’s identity into a verified fact.
Porsche Vice President of the 911 and 718 model line Frank Moser described the S/C as responding to customers’ desire for sports cars that are “particularly fun to drive.” Porsche GT Cars Director Andreas Preuninger said it is the first open-top 911 to use a double-wishbone front axle. Both statements refer to the production S/C, not to an independently verified identification of the 2025 test vehicle.
