For a regular car that feels good to drive without giving up everyday usefulness, start with the Honda Civic for an engaging compact, the Honda Accord for a more comfortable midsize sedan, or the Toyota Camry for a comfortable hybrid with available all-wheel drive. These are U.S.-market 2026 recommendations, not a universal ranking: the best fit depends on whether you value steering and cornering, ride comfort, efficiency, space, or all-weather traction most.
Here, “regular cars” means mainstream sedans and hatchbacks rather than dedicated sports cars. The choices below favor cars that balance enjoyable driving with daily practicality; performance-focused models such as the Civic Type R and Toyota GR Corolla are outside that brief.
How to judge whether an everyday car drives well
Handling matters, but it is only part of the experience. A car that feels composed over broken pavement, accelerates smoothly, keeps wind and road noise in check, and is easy to live with may be a better daily choice than one that is merely sharper through a corner.
Car and Driver says its rankings draw on roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. Its method combines instrumented testing with editors’ subjective impressions. That broader approach is useful here: there is no single driving trait that makes a regular car the right choice for everyone.

10 regular cars to consider
These picks are grouped by the kind of everyday driving they suit, rather than ranked from best to worst. The source evidence is strongest for U.S. 2026 models; trim equipment, prices, and availability can differ by market.
1. Honda Civic: the engaging compact all-rounder
Car and Driver puts the Civic and Civic Hybrid at the top of its 2026 compact-car list and calls the Civic the reigning small-car champion in its comparison coverage. It is offered as a sedan or hatchback, with hybrid and non-hybrid powertrains, so shoppers can choose between body styles and priorities without moving to a dedicated performance car.
Why it stands out: It is a strong starting point if you want a mainstream compact that feels composed and enjoyable while remaining practical. Consumer Reports reported 7.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and 44 mpg overall for its tested Civic Hybrid; those are that publication’s test results, not EPA ratings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

2. Mazda 3: a more polished compact feel
Car and Driver describes the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback as luxury-adjacent mainstream compacts. Its 2025 overview characterizes both body styles as agile and notes available turbo power, all-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual in the hatchback.
Why it stands out: It suits drivers who want a compact with a more premium feel and a choice of body styles. The older overview’s equipment details are useful context, but check current trim availability before shopping.

3. Volkswagen Jetta: a sedan-focused compact alternative
The Jetta appears in Car and Driver’s 2026 compact ranking and its small-car comparison. In the comparison, the tested SEL used a 158-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and had a $31,725 as-tested price.
Why it stands out: Consider it if you want a conventional compact sedan and are comparing it directly with the Civic, Kia K4, Nissan Sentra, or Subaru Impreza.
Trade-off: The cited price and engine details apply to the tested SEL, not every Jetta. The available evidence does not establish that it is the sportiest choice in this group.
4. Honda Accord: a roomier sedan with a comfort edge
Car and Driver highlights the Accord’s roomy passenger space, ride-and-handling balance, and fuel economy in its 2026 under-$30,000 ranking. Its listed starting price is $29,690.

5. Toyota Camry: a comfortable hybrid with available AWD
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Top Picks excerpt describes the Camry as having a comfortable cabin, capable handling, and a practical interior, with all-wheel drive available across trims. Consumer Reports reported 48 mpg overall for its tested Camry hybrid; this is the publication’s test result, not an EPA combined rating.
Why it stands out: It is a good fit for drivers who want everyday comfort and efficiency without treating handling as an afterthought.
Trade-off: The 48 mpg figure belongs to Consumer Reports’ tested hybrid. Check the specific trim and official EPA label when comparing fuel economy.
6. Toyota Prius: a hatchback for efficiency-minded drivers
Car and Driver lists the 2026 Prius as a hybrid hatchback with a 49–57 mpg combined range, depending on version. The publisher’s ranking provides that range; confirm the specific trim’s official EPA label before relying on a precise figure.
Why it stands out: Choose it if a hatchback layout and low fuel consumption are high priorities, while you still want an ordinary car rather than a specialized efficiency vehicle.
Trade-off: The cited fuel-economy range spans versions, so it should not be treated as one rating for every Prius.

Why it stands out: It is worth comparing if you want a compact sedan with a broad range of equipment and powertrain choices.
Trade-off: The fuel-economy range covers different versions, including a hybrid; check the precise trim and EPA rating rather than applying the top figure to the whole lineup.
8. Kia K4: roomy compact practicality
Car and Driver describes the K4 as affordable and roomy and includes it in both its compact rankings and small-car comparison. Associated Press reporting provided by Edmunds lists 22.2 cubic feet of cargo volume for the 2026 K4 hatchback.
Why it stands out: Consider it if cabin and cargo usefulness matter in a compact, especially if you are shopping for the hatchback.
Trade-off: Car and Driver cautions that the K4’s sporty styling promises more sportiness than its driving character delivers. Cargo-volume comparisons also depend on measurement method and configuration.
9. Subaru Impreza: the AWD hatchback choice
The Impreza is the only all-wheel-drive car in Car and Driver’s cited 2026 small-car comparison. The RS trim’s 2.5-liter engine is rated at 180 hp, and the publication describes the hatchback as practical.
Why it stands out: It is the clearest pick here if you specifically want all-wheel drive in a mainstream small hatchback.

Trade-off: Car and Driver says it is not especially quick or full of personality. Choose it for its practical format and drivetrain rather than expecting the sharpest or most powerful drive in the group.
10. Kia K5: a larger sedan with some driving character
Car and Driver calls the K5 a good-value midsize sedan with “a bit of fun.” It is a larger alternative to the compact cars on this list.
Why it stands out: It deserves a look if you want more midsize-sedan space but still care about driving character.
Trade-off: The available evidence supports it as a value-oriented, mildly entertaining sedan, not as a sports sedan or a direct compact-car substitute.
What about the Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla?
Both are useful baselines when shopping for an ordinary compact, but neither is among the ten picks above because the available driving assessments make a less compelling case for driving enjoyment.
Nissan Sentra: a value counterpoint
Car and Driver includes the 2026 Sentra in its compact ranking and small-car test. Its ranking notes fresh styling but describes the carryover four-cylinder and CVT pairing as unexciting. It may still make sense as a value comparison, but the cited evidence does not point to it as a handling leader.
Toyota Corolla: dependable baseline, less engaging by this measure
Car and Driver describes the Corolla as a pillar of affordable transportation while preferring rivals that are more fun to drive. Associated Press reporting provided by Edmunds lists 17.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats for the Corolla hatchback and 13.1 cubic feet for the sedan; confirm the configuration and measurement method before comparing those numbers with other models.
How to choose among them
- For an engaging compact: Start with the Honda Civic; also drive the Mazda 3 if its more upscale character appeals to you.
- For comfort and passenger room: Compare the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, then consider the Kia K5 if you want another midsize option.
- For efficiency: Compare the hybrid versions of the Prius, Camry, Civic, and Elantra using the exact trim’s EPA label.
- For hatchback utility: Look at the Civic, Mazda 3, Prius, K4, and Impreza, checking the cargo layout and access in person.
- For all-wheel drive: The Impreza is the clearest fit in Car and Driver’s cited small-car comparison; Mazda 3 all-wheel drive is also noted in its 2025 overview, but verify current availability.
What to check on a test drive
Drive the cars you are considering on the same route if possible. A repeatable route makes it easier to notice meaningful differences in comfort, visibility, and response instead of relying on a short first impression.
Quick Recap
- Start on imperfect pavement. Notice whether sharp bumps reach the cabin and whether the body settles quickly afterward.
- Use a few tight turns. Check whether steering response feels predictable and whether the car remains composed without requiring constant correction.
- Merge onto a highway. Judge how smoothly the powertrain accelerates and whether the cabin stays comfortable at speed.
- Brake at ordinary and firmer pressures. Look for a consistent, predictable pedal feel; do not test emergency braking on public roads.
- Assess the view from the driver’s seat. Check sightlines, mirrors, blind spots, and how easy it is to judge the car’s corners.
- Sit as you would on a longer trip. Check seat comfort and driving position, then have intended passengers try the back seat.
- Park and load the car. Test the hatch or trunk opening, rear-seat folding, and whether the vehicle fits the spaces you use.
