Choose a Tesla Model S only as a used-car purchase, after checking the individual car’s condition, remaining warranty and local charging access. Tesla’s current U.S. product page says Model S is no longer in production, although pre-owned non-Signature Edition inventory may still be available. Porsche says its updated 2027 Taycan range is available to order, with U.S. deliveries expected from fall 2026. That availability difference matters before you compare acceleration or range.
The short answer: new Taycan versus used Model S
This is not a normal new-car-versus-new-car comparison in the United States. Porsche’s 2027 Taycan is an orderable current model, while Tesla’s current U.S. page states, “Model S is no longer in production.” Tesla still displays Model S and Model S Plaid specifications and says pre-owned non-Signature Edition cars may be available, so those figures describe the product page and not an orderable new-production car.

A Taycan buyer can specify a new vehicle, select equipment and receive a manufacturer-backed delivery estimate. A Model S buyer is shopping local used inventory, where model year, mileage, options, battery condition, accident history, service records and remaining warranty can change the value more than the headline specifications. The sensible question is therefore: do you want a new Porsche electric sport sedan, or does a particular used Model S offer the range, performance and price you need?

Availability, model years and price
2027 Porsche Taycan
Porsche’s U.S. announcement for model year 2027 says the updated Taycan range is available to order and that deliveries are expected to begin in fall 2026. It lists a starting MSRP of $111,900 for the rear-wheel-drive Taycan, before a $2,350 delivery, processing and handling fee. That is a manufacturer-published U.S. starting price at the time of the announcement, not the price of a configured car. Taxes, registration, dealer charges, options and market-specific availability can increase the transaction total.

Earlier 2025 Taycan pricing belongs to an earlier model-year announcement. It can provide historical context for how Porsche positioned the range, but it should not be presented as a current 2026 transaction price.
Used Tesla Model S
Tesla’s current U.S. Model S page explicitly says the car is no longer in production and notes that pre-owned non-Signature Edition inventory may still be available. Availability is therefore local and inventory-dependent. Before treating an advertised price as attractive, verify the vehicle identification number, original in-service date, mileage, options, battery and drive-unit coverage, tire condition, accident or repair history and charging equipment included with the car.
There is no current manufacturer new-car MSRP to place beside the 2027 Taycan. A fair comparison uses the actual price of the specific used Model S and the actual configured price of the Taycan you can order, including fees and options.

Do not rank the range numbers in that table as though they were measured under one standard. Tesla’s figures are U.S. EPA estimates in miles. Porsche’s cited figure is WLTP in kilometres and may describe a different market, body style or motor. The proper comparison is same-market EPA data for matching model years and trims, supplemented by the routes and weather you actually drive.

Range: how Taycan and Model S figures should be read
Model S EPA estimates
Tesla currently displays 410 miles of EPA-estimated range for Model S and 368 miles for Model S Plaid. It also warns that range and charging performance vary with configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather, elevation and charging hardware. Those conditions matter especially on a used car: wheel size, tire wear, battery age and software configuration can all affect the result you see.
The Plaid’s lower published range than the regular Model S is a reminder that the quickest trim is not automatically the longest-distance choice. If your priority is fewer stops, compare the exact wheel and tire configuration and your normal highway conditions rather than assuming the Plaid specification represents every Model S.
Taycan WLTP information
Porsche’s 2025 update materials report up to 678 km WLTP for the refreshed Taycan, depending on body style and motor. WLTP generally produces a different result from EPA testing, so converting 678 km into miles and placing it beside Tesla’s EPA number would create a misleading impression of equivalence. Ask the Porsche retailer for the EPA rating applicable to the U.S. model, body style, battery and wheels you are ordering.
What range means on a trip
Use the official estimate to establish a starting point, then model your own route. A winter highway trip with heating, elevation and headwinds can require more charging than a mild-weather urban commute. For a used Model S, check the car at a high and low state of charge if possible and review its displayed energy history. For a Taycan order, select the battery and wheel configuration with your regular long-distance routes in mind rather than choosing solely by acceleration.
Charging speed, connectors and road-trip planning
Taycan charging
Porsche’s 2025 U.S. announcement says the refreshed Taycan can charge at up to 320 kW at compatible 800-volt DC stations and can move from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes under ideal conditions. “Up to” is important: the car, charger, battery temperature, starting state of charge and station sharing determine the actual curve. Porsche also notes that conditions and driving style affect charging.

For model year 2027, Porsche says most Taycan variants gain a NACS DC fast-charging port while retaining a J1772 AC port. The Turbo GT with the Weissach package is an exception to that announced NACS arrangement. Connector equipment is therefore model-year- and trim-specific. Confirm the exact ports on the vehicle order and ask which adapters, if any, are included.
Model S charging
Tesla says Model S may add up to 200 miles in 15 minutes at Superchargers. This is a Tesla estimate, not a universal session guarantee and not directly comparable with Porsche’s ideal-condition 10–80% time. Tesla’s support information says charging rate varies with battery, state of charge, ambient temperature and vehicle configuration. Site pricing is displayed in the vehicle or app and can vary by location.
Tesla’s current Supercharging support page describes a network of more than 80,000 global Superchargers. That headline count does not tell you whether the stations you need are on your route, available to the exact used car, busy at your travel times or priced acceptably in your region. Check your regular routes in the relevant vehicle app before buying.
Home charging is often the deciding factor
Overnight home charging can reduce dependence on public fast chargers, but installation must match the car and the property. Check the connector, the vehicle’s AC charging capability, the charger’s output, panel capacity, cable length, parking arrangement and local electrical requirements. A 2027 Taycan’s J1772 AC port is explicitly identified in Porsche’s announcement; the exact Model S equipment and market configuration should be verified on the individual car.
- Confirm the vehicle’s AC connector and maximum AC input for the exact model year and trim.
- Have an electrician assess the panel, circuit, grounding, cable route and permit requirements.
- Choose a certified charger with an output your electrical service can sustain; a higher-rated unit does not make the car charge faster than its onboard limit.
- Set charging schedules and a daily charge limit in the vehicle or charger software according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Test the installation before relying on it for a long trip, and keep a public-charging backup on your regular routes.
Performance: fast is not the same as comparable
Tesla lists 3.1 seconds from 0–60 mph and 670 hp for Model S, and 1.99 seconds and 1,020 hp for Model S Plaid. Porsche’s 2025 announcement lists up to 938 hp and 2.4 seconds to 60 mph for the Taycan Turbo S in the specified configuration. These numbers show that both lineups include extreme performance versions, but they do not establish which car has better steering, braking, ride or track consistency.
Rank #4
Acceleration figures depend on launch procedure, battery state, tires, temperature, road surface and equipment. Do not use Plaid to represent every Model S, or Turbo S to represent every Taycan. Match rear- or all-wheel drive, battery, tires, options and model year when comparing two cars you could actually purchase.
The source material does not provide a controlled comparison of ride comfort, steering feel, brake pedal tuning, noise, handling balance or repeated-track performance. Those are questions to answer with an inspection and drive in the exact cars under consideration, not with the headline 0–60 figures.
Cabin, cargo and everyday usability
What is established for Model S
Tesla’s product page lists 28 cubic feet of cargo capacity, three interior displays and seating for three adults in the second row. These are manufacturer specifications and descriptions. Confirm how the hatch, floor, child seats, luggage and rear-seat headroom work for your household in person.
What is not a fair sourced comparison
The supplied manufacturer material does not provide a comparable Taycan cargo measurement or a controlled cabin evaluation. It would therefore be misleading to declare a cargo or interior-quality winner from these figures alone. The Taycan body style, battery packaging, rear-seat space and optional equipment should be assessed in the exact car you are ordering.

Controls, seat comfort, visibility, rear-seat access, trunk opening, child-seat fit and ride quality are daily-use issues that vary by driver. Make a checklist before the appointment and spend time in the rear seat and cargo area, not only in the driver’s seat.

Warranty and used-car risk
Model S warranty figures
Tesla’s current U.S. warranty summary lists basic vehicle coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. It lists battery and drive-unit coverage of 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, with a stated minimum 70% battery-capacity retention condition over that battery/drive-unit warranty period. The warranty supplied with a specific vehicle is authoritative; Tesla says the online summary is for general knowledge.
For a used Model S, confirm the original in-service date and current odometer reading to calculate remaining time and mileage. Ask Tesla or the seller to document transferable coverage, exclusions, prior repairs and any battery or drive-unit replacement. A low purchase price can be offset by tires, suspension work, collision repairs, insurance and charging equipment.
Taycan purchase confidence
A new Taycan gives you a new-vehicle order and the warranty terms attached to that specific market and transaction. Read the actual purchase documents rather than relying on a general web summary. Confirm roadside assistance, battery coverage, service intervals, wear-item exclusions and what happens if delivery timing or configuration changes.

Choose the 2027 Taycan when these priorities dominate
- You want a new car rather than a used inventory search.
- You can support a starting price of $111,900 plus the stated $2,350 fee, taxes, options and other charges.
- You value a configurable Porsche order and can wait for the expected fall 2026 U.S. deliveries.
- Your home and public charging plan supports the exact connector arrangement of your chosen trim.
- You are willing to evaluate range using the applicable U.S. rating and your real route instead of comparing a WLTP headline with an EPA number.
Choose a used Model S when these priorities dominate
- You specifically want Model S range or Plaid acceleration at a used-car transaction price.
- You have local inventory that passes a battery, body, tire, service-history and warranty inspection.
- Supercharger access fits your regular routes and home charging is feasible.
- You accept that Tesla no longer produces the model and that trim, software, parts and warranty details depend on the individual car.
- You prefer the listed 28-cubic-foot cargo figure and three-display layout, subject to checking the actual vehicle.
A practical buying process
If you are considering a used Model S
- Record the VIN, model year, trim, battery, wheels, mileage and original in-service date.
- Obtain a vehicle-history report and inspect for accident repairs, flood exposure, alignment problems and uneven tire wear.
- Verify remaining basic and battery/drive-unit warranty directly against the vehicle’s documents.
- Check displayed range at a known state of charge, review charging behavior and test both AC and DC charging if possible.
- Price replacement tires, insurance, registration, home-charger installation and likely service before making an offer.
- Drive the car on the roads you use, testing ride, braking, visibility, controls, passenger space and cargo access.
If you are ordering a Taycan
- Choose body style, drive system, battery, wheels and performance trim before comparing range or acceleration.
- Request the U.S. EPA range and charging specifications for that exact configuration; do not rely on a generic WLTP number.
- Confirm whether the selected 2027 trim has the announced NACS DC port, the retained J1772 AC port and any adapter requirements.
- Get a written price showing the $111,900 starting MSRP only where applicable, the $2,350 fee, options, taxes and dealer charges.
- Ask for the expected delivery window and what happens if the model-year allocation or equipment changes.
- Complete a home-charging and route plan before delivery rather than after the car arrives.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling the Model S a new-car alternative: Tesla’s current U.S. page says production has ended; treat it as used inventory.
- Putting 410 EPA miles beside 678 km WLTP: the test cycles, markets and configurations differ.
- Equating 200 miles in 15 minutes with 10–80% in 18 minutes: they measure different things under conditions that are not controlled against each other.
- Using Plaid or Turbo S to describe an entire lineup: acceleration and power are trim-specific.
- Assuming a connector from a different model year: verify the exact Taycan trim and Model S equipment.
- Buying on battery warranty language alone: confirm the individual car’s in-service date, mileage and authoritative warranty document.
- Declaring an interior or ride winner from specifications: the supplied material does not establish a controlled cabin or driving comparison.
Verdict: decide by purchase path first, then by numbers
The Porsche Taycan is the clearer fit for a buyer who wants a current, orderable premium electric sport sedan and is prepared to pay new-car money, specify a trim and plan charging around that configuration. The Tesla Model S remains relevant when a particular used example offers compelling range, acceleration, cargo space or Supercharger access at a price that survives a careful condition and warranty check.
Neither the EPA range headline nor the quickest 0–60 claim settles the decision. Compare the exact cars, same-market ratings, connector access, route needs, home electrical installation, warranty remaining, insurance and total transaction cost. That process tells you which sedan suits you; the manufacturer figures alone do not.
