That distinction determines where you start, how Porsche evaluates the request and what kinds of changes are realistic. If the result can be achieved with the current configurator, Exclusive Manufaktur is usually the appropriate path. If it requires a new component, unusual finish, technical development or work on an existing or classic car, ask a Porsche Center about a Sonderwunsch feasibility discussion.

Exclusive Manufaktur and Sonderwunsch at a glance
Porsche uses both names for factory-backed individualization, but they describe different levels of intervention. Exclusive Manufaktur works inside the production system: you select model-specific colors, materials, wheels, trim and equipment that Porsche has already validated for ordering and manufacturing. Sonderwunsch starts with an idea rather than a menu. Porsche’s specialists decide whether the idea can be engineered, built to the required quality, certified for the relevant market and delivered within the project’s practical limits.

This is a practical distinction, not a promise that every feature appears on every Porsche or in every country. Porsche changes option catalogs by model, model year and market, so the current configurator and your regional Porsche Center are the authoritative checks.

What Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur actually covers
Exclusive Manufaktur is the route for making a production Porsche unusually personal without turning the car into a separate engineering program. The choices remain integrated with the model’s normal production line and documentation. Depending on the vehicle, Porsche may offer special exterior paint, contrast details, wheels, lighting components, exhaust finishes, interior packages, additional leather, contrast stitching, seat belts, steering-wheel trim, personalized keys and floor mats.
Model-specific production options
Porsche’s Panamera material illustrates the breadth of the menu with SportDesign packages, special wheels, lighting and exhaust details, interior packages, leather extensions and coordinated small items such as keys and mats. These examples show the type of work Exclusive Manufaktur handles; they are not a universal catalog for every Porsche model.
Paint and color choices
Color is often where buyers first encounter Exclusive Manufaktur. Porsche USA’s individualization page currently states that it offers more than 180 Paint to Sample colors and more than 100 leather and thread colors. Those are Porsche USA page figures accessed in 2026, and they are volatile catalog counts rather than a guarantee for a particular car. A color can still be unavailable because of the model, production year, region, emissions or material compatibility.

When an option is present for your model and market in the Porsche Car Configurator, Porsche has already defined its compatibility and production route. The configurator will normally prevent combinations that cannot be built together. A Porsche Center can clarify pricing, allocation and regional restrictions, but the configuration itself remains part of the regular new-car order rather than a bespoke project brief.
What Sonderwunsch adds
Sonderwunsch is intended for a customer-specific project that cannot be completed simply by ticking available boxes. Porsche describes several overlapping categories, and its consumer and press materials organize them somewhat differently. The common thread is a feasibility-led project with direct involvement from Porsche specialists.

Factory Commission
A Factory Commission is a new-car project developed around an individual customer request. It may use a production model as its base while adding a combination of finishes, trim or components that are not offered as a standard package. Porsche determines whether the requested result can be made without compromising engineering, safety, durability or legal compliance.
Factory Re-Commission
Factory Re-Commissioning applies to an existing vehicle. The work may involve changing the specification of a Porsche that has already been delivered, subject to the car’s condition, age, construction and the proposed modification. This is the relevant Sonderwunsch conversation when the starting point is the Porsche already in your garage rather than an unbuilt order.
Factory One-Off
A Factory One-Off is the most expansive route. Porsche says it can include a unique appearance or newly developed technical elements, ranging from a highly individual finish to components or systems created for one car. “One-off” does not mean every request is accepted; Porsche still has to establish that the concept can be engineered, tested, produced and approved.
Restoration and classic-car work
Sonderwunsch can also overlap with factory restoration work for classic vehicles. The appropriate Porsche team examines the car, its history, its condition and the requested outcome. Restoration is therefore different from simply ordering an older model with new options: the project may involve preserving original substance, recreating parts or correcting decades of wear while meeting Porsche’s quality standards.
Inspiration Vehicles and Paint to Sample Plus
Porsche’s consumer descriptions also refer to Inspiration Vehicles and Paint to Sample Plus. These labels sit alongside Factory Commission, Factory Re-Commission and Factory One-Off in Porsche’s presentation of Sonderwunsch-related work. They indicate a level of design and color development beyond the ordinary menu, but the exact deliverable remains project-specific. Ask the Porsche Center which program name applies to your market and proposed work.

How a Sonderwunsch project is evaluated
Sonderwunsch is not an automatic order channel. Porsche’s published process for a Factory One-Off begins when the customer communicates an idea through a Sonderwunsch customer consultant via a Porsche Center.
- Present the concept. Describe the car, the desired result, the intended use and any reference images or historic details. Be explicit about whether the vehicle is new, already delivered or a classic.
- Receive an initial feasibility assessment. Porsche considers engineering, manufacturing, safety, quality and legal requirements. This stage determines whether the concept merits deeper development; it is not a promise to build it.
- Attend a project meeting if the idea advances. Porsche designers and technical specialists discuss the visual and functional objectives, identify conflicts and explain which elements may need to change.
- Develop the specification. The team translates the idea into materials, colors, parts, processes and, where applicable, technical development. They may propose a different solution when the original request cannot be implemented as described.
- Choose whether to proceed. Porsche presents the project scope for your decision. Work moves forward only if you accept the resulting specification and project terms.
- Build, inspect and deliver. The final route depends on the car and work involved. A new vehicle may be integrated into production, while an existing or classic car may be transported to a responsible Porsche facility for the approved work.
The staged process is why Sonderwunsch cannot be treated like a configurator option. Feasibility is established before Porsche commits to the complete specification, and the customer retains a decision point after the project concept has been developed.
A concrete example: the 2024 911 Targa 4S
Porsche’s 2024 911 Targa 4S example shows the boundary clearly. The car was ordered with choices available in the online configurator, including Paint to Sample and Exclusive Manufaktur details, and did not use special-request items. Patrick Gallas, identified by Porsche as Manager of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur at Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, described an Exclusive Manufaktur order as relatively easy to arrange because it uses the online Porsche Car Configurator.
Porsche said that particular configured 911 followed the same production line and had manufacturing times similar to a regular 911. Treat that as an illustration of that regional car and its specification, not as a guaranteed timing statement for every model, country or order. A Sonderwunsch project with new parts or technical development follows a different assessment and planning path.
Which route fits your idea?
Choose Exclusive Manufaktur when
- You are ordering a new Porsche and the desired paint, wheel, trim, leather, stitching or equipment appears in the current configurator.
- You want factory integration with the model’s ordinary production process.
- You prefer a defined option and a conventional order discussion rather than a design-development project.
- Your request does not require changing the car’s structure, powertrain, software, safety systems or homologation.
Ask about Sonderwunsch when
- The exact color, material, pattern, component or finish is not offered for your model.
- You want a one-off part, a new technical feature or a combination Porsche has not listed.
- You want Porsche to modify a car that has already been delivered.
- You own a classic Porsche and need factory restoration or historically informed bespoke work.
- You have a design concept that needs Porsche designers and engineers to turn it into a buildable specification.
When uncertain, begin with the configurator for a new car. If the desired result is absent, take the specific gap to a Porsche Center and ask whether it is an Exclusive Manufaktur limitation, a market restriction or a candidate for Sonderwunsch review.

Options, accessories and bespoke work are not the same thing
Porsche Genuine Accessories are a separate ownership category. An accessory may be available after delivery, but that does not make it a Sonderwunsch commission or an Exclusive Manufaktur production option. Likewise, a dealer-installed item or an independent modification should not be represented as factory Sonderwunsch work. Ask who designs, approves, installs and documents the change before assuming it belongs to either program.

Model and market availability
Exclusive Manufaktur choices vary by model, model year and market. A color shown on a Porsche USA page may not be orderable in another country, and an option available on one body style may be absent on another. The current regional configurator is more reliable than an old screenshot, forum post or a specification from a different market.
Technical and safety review
Sonderwunsch concepts are subject to technical and safety review. Changes that affect lighting, restraints, structure, aerodynamics, emissions, noise, driver-assistance sensors or software can trigger additional engineering and legal work. Porsche may reject an idea, narrow its scope or substitute a compliant solution.
Quality and legal requirements
Factory work must meet Porsche’s quality standards and the laws applying where the vehicle will be registered and used. A visually simple request can become difficult if its materials, repair method or finish changes fire behavior, visibility, corrosion resistance, pedestrian protection or certification requirements.

Porsche’s public descriptions do not provide a generally applicable Sonderwunsch price list, universal lead time or country-by-country availability table. The cost and schedule depend on the vehicle, materials, engineering effort, testing, restoration condition and local process. Request a current, project-specific answer rather than relying on a figure quoted for another commission.

How to prepare for a Porsche Center conversation
A clear brief makes the first feasibility discussion more useful. Bring the vehicle identification and explain the outcome in measurable terms.
- Vehicle details: model, generation, model year, VIN if the car already exists, mileage and current location.
- Visual references: color samples, historical photographs, sketches or examples of the finish you want. Identify which details are essential and which are negotiable.
- Functional objectives: explain whether the change is cosmetic, ergonomic, aerodynamic, performance-related or intended to preserve originality.
- Use and registration: state the country where the car will be registered and whether it will be road-driven, displayed, raced or collected.
- Timing: provide any event or delivery target, while recognizing that a target date cannot override feasibility and production requirements.
- Documentation expectations: ask how the work will be recorded in the vehicle’s build information, service history and warranty documentation.
For an Exclusive Manufaktur order, start by saving the configuration from the current regional Porsche configurator and asking the Porsche Center to verify that every selected item is compatible and orderable. For Sonderwunsch, lead with the idea and the existing-car details rather than trying to force the request into an unrelated configurator option.
History behind the two names
Porsche says the Sonderwunsch name formally appeared when its Sonderwunsch department was established in 1978. The company also points to earlier individualized requests, including a 1955 request for a rear windscreen wiper on a 356 A Coupé. Porsche says the modern Sonderwunsch program was restarted at the beginning of 2022.
Exclusive Manufaktur represents the ongoing production-option side of that tradition: a controlled menu that lets customers personalize current models at the time of order. Sonderwunsch represents the commissioned-project side, where Porsche evaluates a request and develops an individual solution rather than simply selecting an existing code.
Decision checklist
- Open the Porsche configurator for your exact model and market.
- Check whether the desired color, material, wheel, trim or equipment is listed and compatible.
- If it is listed, discuss an Exclusive Manufaktur order with a Porsche Center.
- If it is not listed, write a concise Sonderwunsch brief explaining the desired result and why the standard options do not achieve it.
- For an existing or classic car, include its condition, history and location and ask for a Factory Re-Commission or restoration discussion.
- Wait for Porsche’s feasibility assessment before assuming the idea, price, timing or legal status is settled.
Bottom line: menu personalization versus a Porsche-developed project
Exclusive Manufaktur is the production-options path: choose from Porsche’s validated, model- and market-specific menu for a new car. Sonderwunsch is the bespoke path: Porsche assesses a customer idea, develops a specification and may create one-off components, restore an existing car or undertake technical work when the project is feasible and legally compliant. Use the configurator for the first case, and use a Porsche Center to start a feasibility conversation for the second.
