Porsche has not abandoned electric vehicles. It has recalibrated its plans: extending some combustion models, adding combustion and plug-in hybrid options to future vehicles, and rescheduling a planned EV platform while continuing to develop battery-electric models. Its later Strategy 2035 announcement reaffirmed investment in combustion, hybrid and all-electric powertrains.
What Porsche changed—and what it did not
On 19 September 2025, Porsche said it would add brand-defining combustion-engine models, keep some existing combustion models available longer, and initially offer a new SUV series planned above the Cayenne exclusively with combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains. It also said development of a planned new EV platform for the 2030s would be rescheduled. These are announced plans, not confirmation that every vehicle or platform has since launched. Porsche’s September 2025 strategy announcement described the move as a response to market conditions and slower growth in demand for exclusive battery-electric vehicles.
The same announcement did not cancel Porsche’s existing EV program. The company said it would continue updating its all-electric range, naming the Taycan, Macan, Cayenne and a future two-door sports car in the 718 segment. In September 2025, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume described the intended approach as a mix of combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles to serve different customer requirements.
How the announced plans differ by powertrain
| Powertrain | Announced models or direction | Timing and status |
|---|---|---|
| Combustion | Some existing combustion models to remain available longer; a new SUV series planned above Cayenne to launch initially with combustion options. | Announced by Porsche in September 2025; no specific launch date for the above-Cayenne SUV was given in that announcement. Source |
| Plug-in hybrid | The above-Cayenne SUV series is planned to include plug-in hybrid powertrains alongside combustion. | Announced plan; timing not stated in the September 2025 announcement. Source |
| Battery-electric | Porsche said it would continue updating the Taycan, Macan, Cayenne and future 718-segment two-door sports car. Development of a planned EV platform for the 2030s was rescheduled. | Ongoing and future product plans as stated in September 2025; the announcement did not establish subsequent launch or delivery. What Strategy 2035 adds
Porsche’s 2026 Strategy 2035 announcement maintained a three-powertrain approach, with investment in combustion-engine and plug-in hybrid drives as well as next-generation battery technology. Porsche said it expected all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman models to support sales in their first full year of production in 2028. It also described a B-segment SUV to be presented in 2028 alongside the all-electric Macan; Porsche expects internal-combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains to contribute after series production ramps up. These dates and production expectations are company guidance, not guarantees. Porsche’s Strategy 2035 announcement sets out those plans.

In June 2026, CEO Michael Leiters said Porsche would continue investing in combustion, hybrid and all-electric drive types. He also said there would be no fully electric 911. That is a model-specific statement, not an announcement that Porsche is ending EV development elsewhere. Leiters’ June 2026 comments describe the company’s three-pillar strategy.
Why Porsche says it recalibrated its plans
Porsche cited changing market conditions, a slower-than-anticipated transition to battery-electric vehicles, and significantly slower growth in demand for exclusive BEVs. Its September 2025 announcement also pointed to US import tariffs and a decline in China’s luxury market as external burdens. These are Porsche’s stated reasons; they should not be read as independently established proof that any one factor caused its strategy change.

What the 2025 results say—and do not say
Porsche reported 279,449 vehicle deliveries in financial year 2025 and said battery-electric vehicles made up 22.2% of its automotive mix that year. Separately, its decarbonization information reported that 34.4% of delivered vehicles were electrified, counting both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles; that figure is not the BEV-only share.
For FY2025, Porsche reported group sales revenue of €36.27 billion, group operating profit of €413 million and a group operating return on sales of 1.1%. These results provide commercial context, but they do not establish that the powertrain strategy change caused the financial or delivery outcomes. Porsche’s 2026 annual press conference reported the financial-year figures and BEV share.

One earlier figure needs particular care: in September 2025, Porsche said rescheduling the new EV platform could burden FY2025 operating profit by up to €1.8 billion. At its 2026 annual press conference, the company later reported approximately €3.9 billion in total extraordinary expenses for FY2025. The earlier forecast for one platform-related burden is not the same measure as the later total of extraordinary expenses.
