The filing explains how intake air could enter through collectors above the cylinder heads while exhaust hardware routes gases out to the sides. It permits other cylinder counts, including a possible 12-cylinder version, but does not confirm a production engine or vehicle.
What Porsche’s patent describes
The German publication, titled “Internal combustion engine with a W-cylinder arrangement,” sets three cylinder banks at angles around a crankshaft. The patent record names Dr Ing HCF Porsche AG as the original and current assignee, and lists Vincenzo Bevilacqua, Thomas Schaal, and Norbert Ruider as inventors. The application was filed on April 12, 2024, and published as DE102024110327A1 on October 16, 2025. Read the patent record.
The patent database labels the application pending, but cautions that its legal-status information is assumed and is not a legal conclusion. Patent publication describes a proposed technical concept; it does not establish that Porsche has approved it for production.
Why reports call it a W12—and what the example shows
A three-bank arrangement could be configured as a 12-cylinder engine with four cylinders in each bank. That is a possible cylinder count described by the patent, not the layout shown in its worked example. The example has six cylinders per bank, with the three banks set at 60 degrees, for 18 cylinders total. The document says other cylinder counts are possible.

Accordingly, “W12” describes one possible interpretation of the broader architecture, not the patent’s illustrated engine. HT Auto’s October 18, 2025, report uses W12 in its headline and discusses potential future applications, while also noting that the filing is not production confirmation. Read HT Auto’s report.
How the intake and exhaust are packaged
Intake air comes from above
Each cylinder-head bank has an upper side facing away from the crankshaft. An air collector, or plenum, sits on that upper side and connects to the bank’s intake ducts. The patent summarizes this arrangement by stating: “According to the invention, an air intake is formed from the upper side (32).” This is a translated sentence from the patent, not a quote from a Porsche executive.

Exhaust gases leave at the sides
Exhaust discharge hardware is arranged on one or both sides of each cylinder-head bank. The description allows neighboring banks’ exhaust components to face each other and directs the exhaust outlets away from the intake collector inlet. Its illustrated example also includes grouped exhaust pipes and an emissions-cleaning unit. These are packaging details in the patent, not evidence of a completed engine installation or measured emissions performance.
Does the patent specify turbochargers or performance?
The description allows at least one turbocharger and discusses assigning one to each bank as a possible arrangement. It does not establish that a finalized engine would use three turbochargers. HT Auto also mentions supercharger packaging, but the patent material cited here supports turbocharging as a possibility, not a confirmed supercharged or production configuration.

The cited documents provide no production output, efficiency, emissions, price, vehicle application, or launch information for this concept. Without those details, the patent cannot support claims about how fast, powerful, economical, or clean an eventual engine would be.

Neither the patent publication nor the cited report confirms that Porsche is building a production W12, an 18-cylinder engine, or a vehicle to use this design. The publication establishes that Porsche filed and published a patent for a three-bank engine concept; it does not establish a production decision. Future applications discussed in news coverage remain speculation unless Porsche confirms them.
