The Porsche 930 put a turbocharged engine into the production 911 lineup and helped make “Turbo” a defining part of the model’s identity. Its “Widowmaker” reputation reflects stories about turbo lag and a forceful surge of power—not a documented crash statistic. Porsche first showed a prototype in 1973; the production car was unveiled in 1974 and launched globally in spring 1975.
When did the Porsche 911 Turbo first come out?
The 930’s history has several dates because the prototype, production unveiling and customer launch were separate milestones:
- September 1973: Porsche showed a silver 911 Turbo prototype at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. It was not yet the production car. Porsche’s 2025 history
- 29 August 1974: Ferry Porsche gave his sister Louise Piëch a special one-off Turbo, designated “No. 1,” for her 70th birthday. It had a turbocharged test version of a 2.7-litre engine and “Carrera” lettering, so it should not be confused with the series-production Turbo. Porsche Newsroom
- 3 October 1974: Porsche unveiled the 3.0-litre series-production 911 Turbo at the Paris Motor Show. Porsche Newsroom
- Spring 1975: Porsche says the production car launched globally as the flagship of the 911 range. Porsche Newsroom
Porsche describes the 930 as the world’s first series-production sports car with an exhaust-gas-controlled turbocharger. That is Porsche’s historical claim; the car did not invent turbocharging, but brought the technology into the 911’s series-production range. Porsche Newsroom
Why is the Porsche 930 called the “Widowmaker”?
“Widowmaker” is an informal enthusiast and automotive-media nickname, not a Porsche model name. The available accounts associate it with the 930’s period driving character: boost could arrive after a delay, followed by a pronounced surge of acceleration. MotorTrend describes that sensation in a 2024 retrospective on a preserved example. MotorTrend

That description explains the reputation without proving that every 930 was uncontrollable or behaved identically. Engine version, setup and driving conditions matter. Porsche’s historical materials establish the car’s engineering and output, but do not document the nickname’s precise origin. The sources cited here provide no quantified accident rate, crash count or death toll tied to the 930, so the nickname should not be presented as a statistical safety finding.
What is the difference between the 930 3.0 and 3.3 Turbo?
The early Turbo used a 3.0-litre engine; Porsche introduced a 3.3-litre successor in 1977. The later engine added a charge-air cooler beneath a larger rear spoiler and had higher rated power. Porsche Classic lists the cars by model year, which differs slightly in presentation from histories that date the 3.3’s introduction to 1977.

| Version | Model years | Engine and rated output | Cooling and spoiler | Transmission note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 930 Turbo 3.0 | 1975–77, according to Porsche Classic | 3.0 litres; 260 PS, according to Porsche | No charge-air cooler; the larger spoiler associated with the later intercooler packaging had not yet arrived. | Four-speed manual in the early cars; Porsche Classic identifies the five-speed change for model year 1989. |
| 930 Turbo 3.3 | 1978–89, according to Porsche Classic; introduced in 1977 in Porsche’s history | 3.3 litres; 300 PS, according to Porsche | Charge-air cooler beneath a larger rear spoiler. | Four-speed manual until the five-speed manual arrived for model year 1989, according to Porsche Classic. |
Specifications and model-year distinctions are drawn from Porsche’s history and the Porsche Classic 930 reference. Porsche Classic says Targa and Cabriolet Turbo bodies became available from model year 1987. The five-speed manual is a late-production distinction, not a feature of every 930.
How much power did the original Porsche 930 Turbo have?
Porsche gives the original 3.0-litre 930 Turbo a rated output of 260 PS. The 3.3-litre successor is rated at 300 PS in Porsche’s history. These are metric horsepower figures as stated by Porsche, not a claim about a separate US-market rating. Porsche reports that 2,850 examples of the first version were produced. Porsche, 2025

How the 930 made “Turbo” part of the 911 identity
The 930 was more than a faster engine option: as the flagship 911, it made turbocharging a conspicuous part of the model’s character. Porsche’s period advertising called it the “crowning glory of a proven concept,” a piece of company marketing language rather than a quote from a named person. Porsche Newsroom
Its development also shows why “930” does not describe one unchanging specification. The 3.0-litre cars established the production Turbo, while the 3.3 added charge-air cooling and more power; later body and transmission options further broadened the range. The 930 helped set the course for the 911 Turbo name without making every model year mechanically identical.
