The Porsche 911 GT3 RS lineage began with the 996-based car introduced in 2003. Porsche says it first reached customers outside the U.S. that year; the 2006 997 GT3 RS was the first sold in the United States. Porsche’s official chronology documents major introductions and iterations, not a complete worldwide list of model years, so the years below are introduction labels—not continuous model-year ranges.
How to read the GT3 RS year list
“Generation” identifies a 911 platform era—996, 997, 991 or 992—while a year in Porsche’s historical account marks an introduction or a notable iteration. Neither automatically establishes every market’s model year. Porsche’s separate anniversary account, for example, discusses model years for the standard GT3; those dates cannot be used to fill gaps in the GT3 RS chronology. The performance specifications below are manufacturer-published figures, not independent comparative test results.
Porsche describes the RS as a link between road sports cars and GT racing cars, and frames it as a motorsport-focused flagship that can also be driven on winding roads. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the car’s role.
996 generation: the first GT3 RS (introduced 2003)
The first 911 GT3 RS was based on the 996. Porsche’s press kit says it used the GT3’s high-revving 3.6-liter boxer engine, rated at 381 PS. Its historical account describes a roll cage, a carbon-fiber bonnet and rear wing, a polycarbonate rear window, and a white-only presentation in that account. Porsche lists its mass as 1,360 kg with a full fuel tank, acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds, and a 191 mph top track speed.

Porsche says the car first reached customers outside the U.S. in 2003. The distinction matters: this was the start of the lineage, not the first U.S.-market GT3 RS.
997 generation: three documented iterations
997 GT3 RS (introduced 2006)
Porsche identifies the 2006 car as the first GT3 RS sold in the U.S. It paired a 415-hp 3.6-liter engine with a six-speed manual transmission and used the wider Carrera 4 body, lightweight panels and a carbon-fiber rear wing. Porsche lists 0-to-60-mph acceleration of 4.0 seconds and a 193 mph top track speed.

997 II GT3 RS (introduced 2009)
The 2009 iteration moved to a 3.8-liter engine rated at 450 hp in Porsche’s press kit. Porsche also notes a widened front track, track-tuned Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and lightweight components.
997 II GT3 RS 4.0 (introduced 2011)
Porsche says this version was limited to 600 units and was the first series-produced 911 with a 4.0-liter engine. The press kit gives output as 500 hp at 8,250 rpm and mass as 2,998 lbs. The limited production figure applies to this RS 4.0 iteration, not to the entire 997 generation.

991 generation: PDK and further lightweight technology
991 GT3 RS (introduced 2015)
Porsche’s chronology describes a 500-hp 4.0-liter engine paired, for the first time in the GT3 RS lineage, with a seven-speed PDK transmission. The car also adopted the 911 Turbo’s wide body and added carbon-fiber components, a magnesium roof, rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus.
Second 991-generation iteration
Porsche identifies the optional Weissach Package as a first for this iteration. It brought more carbon-fiber parts, with forged magnesium wheels available as an option. Porsche says this RS had double the downforce of the GT3 offered at the same time. The historical passage documenting these features does not give an introduction year, so it is not assigned one here.

992 generation: motorsport-derived aerodynamics
Porsche’s 992-generation GT3 RS press kit emphasizes a motorsport-derived aerodynamic direction. Porsche’s U.S. model page describes the 2023 GT3 RS as a road-legal, 518-hp high-performance sports car. That figure is specific to the U.S. page’s 2023 model description; check Porsche’s current page for the relevant country before relying on present-day availability or specifications, which can vary by market and change over time.
