A September 2026 report says one 2008 car with 98,000 miles sold for $12,100, which is below $16,000. That transaction proves the price is possible for an individual example—not that every G8 GT currently sells below $16,000. Hagerty’s October 2026 guide places a 2009 G8 GT in #3 Good condition at $16,233–$21,267.
The $12,100 car is a Pontiac G8 GT
Pontiac sold the G8 GT for the 2008 and 2009 model years. It is a full-size, four-door sedan built around a rear-wheel-drive layout rather than the front-wheel-drive architecture common among many contemporary family cars. The GT was the V8 model in the regular G8 range, positioned below the later G8 GXP in Pontiac’s performance lineup.

The G8’s engineering came from the rear-drive Holden Commodore VE. Hagerty describes that relationship in its model history and notes that the G8 line ended after Pontiac ceased production. That short production run helps explain why clean cars attract attention today: there are only two U.S. model years to shop, and the model is no longer being made.

The specific low-price example was a 2008 G8 GT with 98,000 miles. AutoTech Plus reported a $12,100 sale on September 12, 2026, describing the car as having service records, a clean Carfax report, and a California title. That is an attributed transaction, not an independently verified auction record, so treat it as evidence that a sub-$16,000 purchase can occur—not as a guaranteed market price.

What makes the G8 GT a performance sedan?
| Specification | 2008 Pontiac G8 GT detail | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Body style | Four-door sedan | Pontiac G8 model information |
| Driven wheels | Rear-wheel drive | Pontiac’s 2008 brochure |
| Engine | 6.0-liter all-aluminum V8 with Active Fuel Management | Pontiac’s 2008 brochure |
| Power | 361 hp at 5,300 rpm | Factory rating in the 2008 brochure |
| Torque | 385 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm | Factory rating in the 2008 brochure |
| Transmission | Six-speed automatic | Pontiac’s 2008 brochure |
| 0–60 mph | 5.3 seconds | Pontiac brochure claim; Hagerty describes 5.2 seconds |
| Original MSRP | $29,995 | Hagerty model description; original price, not a current value |
The numbers explain the car’s appeal. A 6.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive, and a six-speed automatic gave the G8 GT the hardware enthusiasts expected from a muscle sedan, while the four-door body made it usable as ordinary transportation. Pontiac’s brochure says the engine used low-friction roller lifters and produced 361 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. That wording is manufacturer brochure copy, not an independent test result.
Does it really have “Corvette guts”?
That phrase is directionally understandable but technically imprecise. The GT’s L76 belongs to the LS-family of pushrod V8 engines and is related to the engines used in high-performance Chevrolet products. However, the G8 GT is not equipped with the 6.2-liter LS3 that Hagerty identifies with the G8 GXP and Corvette application.
In practical terms, calling the GT a Corvette-engined sedan overstates the connection. The accurate description is a G8 GT with a 6.0-liter aluminum LS-family V8. The later G8 GXP is the model associated with the 6.2-liter LS3. Keeping those engines separate matters when you compare prices, verify parts, or evaluate a listing that uses “Corvette engine” as a sales shortcut.

How quick is the G8 GT?
Pontiac’s 2008 brochure states a 0–60-mph time of 5.3 seconds. Hagerty’s model description gives 5.2 seconds. Those figures differ by one tenth and should not be presented as if they were a single independently repeated test. The brochure number is a factory claim; Hagerty’s number is its own published description. Either way, the GT was unusually quick for a large four-door sedan when new.
Acceleration is only one part of the experience. Rear-wheel drive changes how the car delivers its torque compared with a front-drive sedan, and the automatic transmission gives the GT a straightforward, repeatable way to use the V8’s output. When inspecting a used car, pay attention to how the transmission engages from a stop, during steady cruising, and under firm acceleration. A specification sheet cannot tell you whether a particular car shifts properly.
Is under $16,000 a realistic price?
It can be, but the evidence supports an individual-sale interpretation rather than a blanket market claim.

| Reported 2008 transaction | $12,100 | AutoTech Plus reported this sale for a 2008 G8 GT with 98,000 miles, service records, a clean Carfax report, and a California title. It is one reported transaction. |
| 2009 #3 Good valuation | $16,233–$21,267 | Hagerty’s October 2026 guide estimate for a 2009 G8 GT in #3 Good condition. |
| Original GT MSRP | $29,995 | Hagerty’s model description lists the original new-car price; it is not a current used value. |
The $12,100 sale and the $16,233–$21,267 valuation describe different model years and different kinds of evidence. One is a single reported transaction for a 2008 car with nearly 100,000 miles. The other is a valuation range for a 2009 car in a specified condition category. Combining them into one “typical G8 GT price” would be misleading.
Condition, mileage, title history, location, equipment, and the quality of the transaction can all move an individual car outside a guide range. A documented, mechanically sound car may command more than a rough example, while a car needing immediate work can fall below a guide estimate. The right question is not simply whether the listing is below $16,000; it is what you receive for that money.
How to evaluate a G8 GT advertised below $16,000
Use the price as a starting point for verification, not as proof of a bargain. Work through the car in this order.

- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
- Confirm the identity. Verify that the vehicle is a GT, not a different G8 trim, and record the model year. The 2008 and 2009 cars are close in concept, but valuation references may apply to only one year.
- Match the paperwork to the car. Check the VIN on the title, registration, windshield, and door-area label. Look for branding, inconsistent mileage entries, or gaps that the seller cannot explain.
- Read the history report critically. A clean report is useful evidence, but it does not replace an inspection. The $12,100 example was reported with a clean Carfax report; that detail should be understood as part of that car’s documentation, not a guarantee for every G8 GT.
- Request maintenance records. Ask for invoices rather than a verbal claim that the car was “serviced.” Organize the records by date and mileage so you can identify long gaps or major work.
- Inspect the engine cold. Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. Listen for abnormal noises, watch for warning lights during the start-up sequence, and check for visible leaks. A cold start can reveal issues hidden by a pre-warmed engine.
- Test the six-speed automatic. During the drive, check engagement from Park into gear, low-speed shifts, highway cruising, and acceleration. Any flare, harsh engagement, delay, or warning message deserves a professional diagnosis before purchase.
- Check the chassis and brakes. Have a technician inspect suspension components, steering, wheel bearings, brake condition, tires, and underbody corrosion. These items can materially change the real cost of a low-priced car.
- Verify the title and selling terms. Make sure the title status, seller identity, registration requirements, and any liens are clear in your jurisdiction. A low advertised price is not meaningful if the transaction cannot be completed cleanly.
- Budget for an inspection contingency. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing. If the seller will not allow one, treat that refusal as a reason to walk away rather than as a reason to lower your standards.
What to look for in the engine and drivetrain
The factory specification is a 6.0-liter aluminum V8 with Active Fuel Management. On a used example, the important issue is not whether the engine has the right displacement on paper; it is whether the specific engine, transmission, cooling system, and driveline have been maintained. Confirm that the engine identification and equipment match the listing, especially when a seller uses broad LS or Corvette terminology.
Because the car is rear-wheel drive, inspect the complete driveline rather than focusing only on the engine. During the road test, note vibration under acceleration, clunks when changing from drive to reverse, and noises that change with vehicle speed. These symptoms are not a diagnosis by themselves, but they are reasons to put the car on a lift and obtain a written assessment.

G8 GT versus G8 GXP: do not confuse the two
The GT and GXP share the G8 name and rear-drive sedan format, but they are not the same performance model. Hagerty identifies the GXP’s engine as a 6.2-liter LS3, while the GT uses the 6.0-liter V8 rated at 361 hp in Pontiac’s brochure. A listing that advertises a GT as an LS3 car should be checked against the VIN, engine documentation, and factory equipment.

This distinction also matters for valuation. A guide figure for a 2009 GT cannot be transferred to a GXP, and a reported sale of a 2008 GT cannot establish a price for another trim. Always compare the same model year, trim, condition, and transaction type.
Why the G8 GT still attracts buyers
- Unusual layout: It combines a full-size four-door body with rear-wheel drive and a large-displacement V8.
- Strong factory output: The rated 361 hp and 385 lb-ft give the GT a clear performance identity without relying on aftermarket modifications.
- Short production window: Pontiac sold the G8 only for the 2008 and 2009 model years before the brand ended production.
- Usable transmission: The six-speed automatic makes the car approachable for drivers who want V8 performance without a manual gearbox.
- Documented historical value: The Holden Commodore VE connection gives the sedan a distinct engineering background compared with many U.S.-market family cars of the period.
Those strengths do not eliminate the normal risks of buying an older performance sedan. Age, mileage, deferred maintenance, accident history, and modifications matter more than a dramatic headline price.
Who should buy one?
A G8 GT makes sense for a buyer who wants a large sedan with rear-wheel-drive behavior and V8 performance, is comfortable paying for a specialist inspection, and can judge condition rather than shopping by price alone. It is particularly attractive when the seller can provide consistent service records and the car passes an independent inspection.
It is a poor fit for someone who needs the lowest possible operating cost, wants a new-car warranty, or cannot absorb an unexpected repair. The original MSRP and current valuation figures say nothing about the maintenance budget for a specific 15-to-18-year-old vehicle. Set aside money for age-related repairs before deciding that a sub-$16,000 listing is affordable.
The bottom line on the “under $16,000” claim
Yes, a Pontiac G8 GT can appear under $16,000: AutoTech Plus reported a 2008 example selling for $12,100. But that is one reported, unverified-by-independent-record transaction, not proof that the entire model has fallen below that threshold. Hagerty’s October 2026 estimate for a 2009 GT in #3 Good condition is $16,233–$21,267.
The useful takeaway is that the G8 GT remains attainable at the right mileage and condition, while well-kept cars can command more. Verify the trim, model year, title, history, mechanical condition, and inspection results before treating any price as a deal.
