Yes. Polestar enabled Android Auto on the Polestar 2 with software version P3.3.16. It is a software feature, not a replacement infotainment unit, but availability can vary by market, model year and vehicle configuration. To use it, connect a compatible Android phone to the car’s USB-C media port; Polestar’s documented setup is wired.
What changed—and why Android Automotive is not Android Auto
The Polestar 2 already has Android Automotive OS built into the car, with vehicle-integrated Google services and apps. Android Auto is different: it projects compatible apps from a connected Android phone onto the center display. It adds a phone-based option alongside the car’s native system rather than replacing it.

That distinction matters for owners who expected Android Auto simply because the car runs an Android-based operating system. The two systems have different roles: native apps can work without a phone connected, while Android Auto uses the phone and its mobile data connection. Polestar describes the vehicle’s built-in Google-based infotainment in its Polestar 2 specifications.
Which update enabled Android Auto?
P3.3.16 introduced the feature
Polestar’s software notes identify version P3.3.16 as the update that enabled Android Auto. The same release lists low-speed driving improvements for model years 2021–2023; that model-year reference does not, by itself, establish a complete Android Auto eligibility list. Polestar’s Polestar 2 software-update notes describe updates by release and vehicle applicability.

Do not infer that every Polestar 2 received the feature at the same time or in the same way. Availability can depend on market, model year and options. Polestar’s manual labels Android Auto as an option/accessory and notes that availability may vary. Check the software version and equipment of the specific car, especially when buying used.
Later updates are not the launch update
Polestar later listed P5.1.17 as including a USB-connection improvement for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. That is a later connectivity refinement, not the release that originally enabled Android Auto. The same update history includes other releases, including P3.4.4 and P5.0.10, with changes that vary by model year; their presence in the history does not mean they were the Android Auto launch.
What Android Auto can do on the Polestar 2
With a compatible phone connected, Android Auto can put supported navigation, music, calling and other car-adapted apps on the center display. It does not expose every Android app: an app must support Android Auto’s in-car interface.

- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
- Use compatible apps from the center display and control them with the car’s controls.
- Make and receive calls, listen to music and get driving directions.
- Use the steering-wheel controls and voice control for supported functions.
- View Android Auto navigation guidance in the driver display when an active route description is present. Starting navigation in Android Auto ends ongoing native vehicle navigation guidance.
Polestar’s owner manual documents these display and control behaviors. Current documentation refers to Google Gemini for Android Auto voice control, but voice features and supported commands can vary with phone, account, language, market and Google’s rollout.
How to connect an Android phone
- Check the car’s software. Confirm the vehicle has a version that enables Android Auto; instructions for checking updates are below.
- Prepare the phone. Use a compatible Android phone with Android Auto available and an internet connection. Update or install Android Auto if the phone prompts you to do so.
- Use a data-capable USB cable. Connect the phone to the Polestar 2’s USB-C media port—the manual identifies the relevant port as the USB port with a white frame. Do not assume that every USB port supports projection.
- Approve the first-time setup. Follow the prompts on the phone and center display and accept the terms and permissions required for the connection.
- Open Android Auto. It should start automatically after the phone has been set up. If it is running in the background, reopen it from the car’s App view, then select an available compatible app.
Polestar’s Android Auto connected-services page documents the USB-C media-port connection and compatible-app use. Its instructions establish wired USB operation; they do not establish native wireless Android Auto for every Polestar 2. Do not assume a wireless adapter is supported for a particular car without vehicle-specific confirmation.
Choose the right voice-control button action
To start voice control through Android Auto, press and hold the steering-wheel voice-control button. A brief press activates the vehicle’s own voice-control system, according to Polestar’s manual.

- Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
- Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
- Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
- Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.
How to check for a software update
On the center display, open App view → Settings → System → Software update. The car notifies you when an over-the-air update is available. Polestar says some updates may reach authorized workshops before OTA distribution, and its update process can include earlier releases when a car is brought up to the latest available version. If you are unsure whether a specific vehicle has P3.3.16 or Android Auto enabled, check with Polestar or an authorized workshop.

- Verify the software first. Check the version in App view → Settings → System → Software update. If the vehicle is not on software that enables Android Auto, check for an update or ask an authorized workshop about availability.
- Check the port and cable. Connect to the USB-C media/data port identified by the white frame. Try a known-good cable that supports data transfer; a charge-only cable cannot provide the expected phone projection.
- Unlock the phone and complete prompts. Accept any Android Auto setup, terms or permissions shown on the phone or car display.
- Confirm the phone is ready. Make sure Android Auto is enabled or available on the phone and that it has an internet connection. A compatible app must be installed for it to appear in Android Auto.
- Isolate the connection. As practical troubleshooting, disconnect other phones or USB devices, restart the phone and reconnect it. If needed, remove the car from the phone’s Android Auto history and set it up again.
- Escalate a persistent fault. If the car still does not recognize a compatible phone through the correct port with a known-good data cable, contact Polestar Support or an authorized workshop.
The port, software and phone requirements above follow Polestar’s documentation. Cable swaps, restarts and re-setup are general troubleshooting steps, not a Polestar-prescribed repair procedure.
Android Auto or the built-in Polestar system?
Use Android Auto when you want compatible apps and data from your phone on the car’s display. Use the built-in Android Automotive system when its native apps and vehicle integration suit the task, or when you do not want to connect a phone. The choice is about which ecosystem and apps you prefer—not whether one system replaces the other.
- Android Auto: phone-based apps and data, subject to phone, cable, compatible apps and internet access.
- Built-in Android Automotive: the Polestar’s native infotainment and supported vehicle-integrated apps, without requiring Android Auto projection.
For Polestar 2 owners, Android Auto is a software-enabled additional way to use the center display. P3.3.16 is the enabling release; the practical checks are whether that software and feature are available on the individual car, and whether the phone is connected through the correct USB data port.
