These nine concepts, spanning 2000 to 2023, show how dramatically those ambitions have changed—from enormous combustion engines to electric power and imagined autonomous travel. The 2024 Interesting Engineering story behind this selection lists nine cars, despite an introduction that says it will cover 10; no tenth entry is identified.
What makes these nine concepts worth revisiting?
The cars are striking for different reasons. Some are defined by ambitious powertrains, some by unusual body and cabin design, and some by the distance between an idea and a road-going vehicle. The reported figures below come from Interesting Engineering’s September 10, 2024 story; they are concept specifications or ambitions, not independently verified test results. The selection does not provide a common performance test, so the numbers should not be treated as a direct ranking.
From 2000 to 2005: big-engine visions
Audi Rosemeyer (2000)
Unveiled on June 1, 2000, the Audi Rosemeyer honored racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer. Interesting Engineering reports an 8.0-liter W16 and reads the concept’s visual lineage as a precursor to later Volkswagen Group designs, including the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron, as well as the Audi TT and R8. That is the story’s interpretation of its influence, rather than a confirmed claim of direct production-car development.
Cadillac Sixteen (2003)
Cadillac’s four-seat Sixteen concept was unveiled at the 2003 North American International Auto Show. The story reports a 13.6-liter V-16 rated at 1,000 hp and 1,000 lb-ft, with cylinder deactivation intended to improve fuel efficiency. Those are reported concept specifications, not results from an independently verified test. The Sixteen never reached production.

Maserati Birdcage 75th (2005)
Created by Pininfarina for its 75th anniversary, the Birdcage 75th looked back to the 1960s Tipo 60/61 while drawing on components from the MC12 GT1 race car. Its reported features included a carbon-fiber chassis, mid-mounted V-12, raised wheel arches, structural glazing and a canopy door. The concept’s visual drama came as much from its sculptural body and unusual access as from its racing connections.
2010–2017: concepts between show stand and road
Jaguar C-X75 (2010)
The C-X75 debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Jaguar shelved the program in 2012 for economic reasons, but the concept returned to public attention as a stunt car in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre. Interesting Engineering also reports that designer Ian Callum was later commissioned to convert one of the stunt cars for road use by a collector. That commission does not mean the original concept entered series production.

Rolls-Royce 103EX (2016)
The all-electric, autonomous 103EX imagined luxury travel in 2035. Rather than present itself as a conventional production preview, it explored a future in which the car’s role and passenger experience could change alongside its technology. The story says the concept completed a four-year global tour and returned to Goodwood in 2019.
Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 Cabriolet (2016)
Revealed during Monterey Car Week, the Vision 6 Cabriolet paired a long, open-top silhouette with electric performance ambitions. Interesting Engineering reports a length of 19 feet 8 inches, 738 hp and a 200-mile range. These are figures reported for the concept, not verified production-car specifications or a claim about a consumer model’s performance.

Porsche 919 Street (2017)
The 919 Street was an internal road-car design study based on Porsche’s 919 race car. Unlike earlier race-influenced road cars such as the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, it did not advance beyond a clay model, according to the story. It offers a useful contrast: a compelling racing-derived idea can remain a design exercise rather than become a road car.
2022–2023: electric mobility and performance targets
Cadillac Innerspace (2022)
Unveiled at CES 2022, the Innerspace used Ultium EV technology as the basis for a lounge-like cabin concept. Ottomans and wraparound LED displays stood in for the familiar arrangement of seats and controls, shifting the emphasis from driving inputs to the passenger environment. The concept’s interior is its central proposition, not evidence that those features became available in a production Cadillac.

Porsche Mission X (2023)
The Mission X set out ambitious targets: Interesting Engineering reports a goal of 1 hp per kilogram and a 900-volt system, alongside an aim for strong Nürburgring lap times. These are concept ambitions, not achieved track results. Its significance in this selection is the way it frames an electric sports-car vision around measurable targets without establishing that those targets were met.

Across the list, the emphasis moves from dramatic combustion-engine ideas—the Rosemeyer, Sixteen and Birdcage—to electric concepts and visions of future mobility. Their paths are just as varied: the Sixteen did not enter production, the C-X75 program was shelved, and the 919 Street stayed at clay-model stage, while the 103EX completed a public tour. The Interesting Engineering account is a secondary source, so its technical figures and interpretations of influence should be understood as reported claims, not manufacturer-verified specifications.
