What happened on Tonkin Highway?
PerthNow reported that the crash occurred northbound on Tonkin Highway in Lexia at about 5:45 pm on Tuesday, 27 June 2023. In its account of dashcam footage, traffic slowed in the left lane as a truck travelled close behind a white sedan. The truck swerved as traffic stopped, clipped the sedan’s rear and continued into a roadside light pole. The sedan skidded across both lanes.
PerthNow’s 29 June 2023 report said the crash was believed to have caused minor injuries, but did not identify who made that assessment or give an injury count.
What charges did the driver face?
According to PerthNow’s account of WA Police information, the 33-year-old driver was charged with careless driving and no authority to drive. These were reported charges, not a conviction.

At publication, the report said the driver was due in court at a later date. It did not report whether he appeared, how the case was resolved or whether he was sentenced.
Was the cause of the crash established?
The report describes the sequence shown in dashcam footage, but does not give a definitive finding about what caused the crash. It mentions anonymous social-media comments speculating about distraction or following distance; those comments do not establish either as a cause.
