Every Toyota Hilux Generation Ranked: From Worst to Best

Toyota’s eight historically numbered Hilux generations span very different priorities, from basic utility to modern refinement. Here is an editorial ranking—and why the 2026 Japan-market redesign is treated separately.

This is an editorial ranking of Toyota’s eight historically numbered Hilux generations, not a reliability league table. It weighs work-focused engineering, comfort and everyday usability, the significance of each redesign, and historical reach. On that basis, the eighth generation ranks first for its broader mix of toughness and refinement, while the seventh is the most consequential globally. The order would change for someone who values classic simplicity or restoration above modern comfort.

Toyota’s history identifies eight generations, from the 1968 launch through the 2015 introduction of the eighth generation, which its chronology describes as continuing onward. Toyota announced a completely redesigned Hilux for Japan in May 2026, but the official material cited here does not explicitly number it as a ninth generation, so it appears as a separate coda rather than an extra ranked entry.

How this ranking works

The ranking considers four questions: how each generation approached work capability and durability-oriented engineering; how it developed comfort and daily usability; how significant its changes were; and how broad its historical and global impact became. Toyota’s official history is useful for the timeline and manufacturer-stated changes, but it does not provide independent comparative scores. This is therefore an editorial order, not a claim about failure rates, safety rankings, or lifetime ownership costs.

The generations are ranked in reverse order below: number eight is the weakest fit for this set of criteria, and number one is the strongest overall. An individual truck’s market, condition, specification, and service history matter more to a buyer than its generation’s position on this list.

Every Toyota Hilux generation, ranked worst to best

8. First generation (1968–1972)

The original Hilux earns its place in the story, but comes last in a present-day, all-around ranking. Toyota introduced it in March 1968 as a bonnet-type truck succeeding the Briska and Light Stout. The company says Toyota conceived it and Hino developed and manufactured it at Hamura. Its documented specification included a separate frame, a 1.5-liter engine rated at 70 PS, seating for three, and a 1,000 kg payload. Those figures describe a clear work-truck purpose, not modern-day comfort or equipment.

Its historical importance and straightforward brief are substantial strengths. Its low position reflects the criteria’s emphasis on everyday usability across eras: sparse equipment and period ride expectations are not design failures, but they make it less versatile by contemporary standards. Toyota’s chronology provides the launch and specification details in its Hilux historical overview.

7. Second generation (1972–1978)

The second generation was a measured evolution rather than a reset. It retained mechanical components from its predecessor and was offered in short- and long-wheelbase forms. Toyota’s history also notes a 2.0-liter, 105 hp Highway model intended to deliver smoother expressway driving. That addition matters because it shows the Hilux stretching beyond strictly local work use, but the generation’s documented changes are less consequential than the later steps toward broader comfort, global reach, and modern refinement.

It ranks above the first generation because the range began to address different use cases and faster-road driving. It remains near the bottom because the available history describes refinement at the margins rather than a broad shift in the truck’s role.

6. Fourth generation (1983–1988)

The fourth generation brought a more visible redesign, including distinctive blister fenders, but its transition was not uniform across the range. Toyota says the renewed body applied to the “Comfortable” rear-wheel-drive series, while the “Popular” rear-wheel-drive series continued with the third-generation model; all four-wheel-drive models received a new body. That overlap makes any simple claim that every fourth-generation Hilux changed at once misleading.

Its place here reflects both the significance of the fresh design and the limited basis for placing it above generations with more clearly documented changes in comfort or global importance. It is a useful reminder that Toyota’s generation labels do not always describe a simultaneous change to every body style or market.

5. Third generation (1978–1983)

The third generation marks a clear step toward making the Hilux more than a basic work truck. Toyota highlights more sedan-like equipment and ride comfort, a choice of body lengths, and the extended-cab Super Deluxe. Those changes broadened the truck’s appeal without abandoning its utility-oriented identity.

It ranks in the middle because the evolution in comfort and body choice is meaningful, especially against the first two generations. It does not place higher because the documented case for later generations includes a more extensive combination of cabin versatility, worldwide production, or modern refinement.

4. Fifth generation (1988–1997)

Toyota framed the fifth generation around power, sturdiness, and comfort, with upgraded interior equipment and a more unified body approach. Rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models still had visibly different wheel-arch treatments. The result is a strong midpoint in the Hilux’s development: a truck that retained its traditional utility while becoming more multipurpose and better equipped.

It sits above the third generation because Toyota’s account describes a more comprehensive emphasis on comfort and equipment alongside strength. It falls short of the top three because the sixth, seventh, and eighth generations each offer a stronger documented change in either passenger usability, worldwide significance, or the combination of capability and refinement.

3. Sixth generation (1997–2004)

The sixth generation made the Hilux’s different audiences more explicit. Toyota split the business-use truck line from a personal-use sports pickup line. The latter gained a taller, longer cabin and improved quietness; an extra-cab version added auxiliary rear seats while retaining the cargo bed.

That separation is a notable usability milestone: the Hilux could serve work needs while its personal-use variants made more room for occupants and everyday driving. It ranks third for the breadth of that shift, though it does not match the seventh generation’s manufacturing reach or the eighth’s documented focus on modern comfort and refinement.

2. Seventh generation (2004–2015)

The seventh generation has the strongest case for second place on historical reach. Toyota launched it in August 2004 as a global pickup intended for more than 140 countries. The company says it improved interior space and comfort while preserving durability, and placed it in the IMV family with the Innova and Fortuner. Toyota also identifies it as the first Hilux generation not produced in Japan, with production centered in Thailand, South Africa, and Argentina alongside additional production elsewhere.

That global platform and manufacturing footprint make this more than a routine model change. Toyota Motor Europe reported cumulative global Hilux sales of over 18 million by the time of its May 2016 report and reported 34,000 Hiluxes sold in Europe in calendar year 2015. These are company-published figures tied to those dates and scopes, not current totals.

The seventh ranks just behind the eighth because the available descriptions of the later generation make a stronger case for combining work-oriented toughness with improvements to ride comfort, cabin quietness, and efficiency. Toyota’s launch and production history appears in its historical overview; the Europe-specific sales figures and vehicle details are in Toyota Motor Europe’s 2016 Hilux report.

1. Eighth generation (2015 onward in Toyota’s chronology)

The eighth generation ranks first because it most directly combines the traditional work-truck brief with a stated push toward greater comfort and lower everyday stress. World-premiered in May 2015, it was developed around customer feedback from varied road conditions. Toyota described the goal as “redefining toughness”: preserving ruggedness while improving ride comfort, cabin quietness, and efficiency.

Toyota Europe’s 2016 account adds that its European configuration had a stronger ladder frame, reinforced deck, enhanced four-wheel-drive equipment, and safety features. Those are Europe-market details from that 2016 material; they should not be treated as equipment fitted to every Hilux worldwide or every model year. The eighth comes first not because the sources prove it is the most reliable or safest generation, but because its documented design brief most explicitly joins capability with comfort and refinement. The launch history is in Toyota’s historical overview, and the European specification details are in the Toyota Motor Europe report.

Where the redesigned 2026 Hilux fits

Toyota announced a completely redesigned Hilux for Japan on May 28, 2026. Its release describes a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV diesel, six-speed automatic transmission, part-time four-wheel drive, ladder frame, and updated safety and connectivity features. Toyota’s global gallery also lists a 2026 Hilux. The release is Japan-market-specific, and the official material does not explicitly call this vehicle the ninth generation; it is therefore not added to the historically numbered ranking.

Toyota lists an over-rail bed liner among dealer options for the Japan-market 2026 model. Any accessory purchase should be checked against country, model year, cab and body configuration, and fitment; an option listing for that model does not establish compatibility with other Hiluxes. See Toyota’s Japan-market 2026 release and Hilux global gallery.

What this ranking can—and cannot—tell a buyer

For a buyer, the best generation depends on the truck itself and the job it needs to do. A newer generation may offer a more contemporary comfort and equipment brief, while an older model may appeal for its period character or simpler design. The material available here does not establish a generation-by-generation reliability winner, comparative repair costs, or a ranking by ease of restoration. A sound purchase decision requires checking the specific truck’s market specification, condition, maintenance record, and suitability for the intended work.
