Short answer: a well-maintained manual second-generation Audi TT is the safer default recommendation for most used-coupe buyers, while the Peugeot RCZ is the more distinctive and potentially better-value choice for someone who prioritises styling and lively front-wheel-drive handling. The badge is less important than the exact engine, gearbox, year, mileage and documented maintenance. A neglected example of either car is a poor buy.

Why “Audi TT” is too broad a specification
The TT name covers several generations, engines, transmissions and drivetrains. A first-generation front-wheel-drive manual, a second-generation 2.0 TFSI quattro and a later S tronic car do not have the same purchase risks or running costs. Audi’s 2012 UK brochure, for example, lists Mk2 Coupe combinations including 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, quattro and 2.0 TDI powertrains, with manual or S tronic transmissions depending on the version.

Write the full specification down before comparing a TT with an RCZ: registration year, generation, engine, power output, gearbox, driven wheels, mileage and service evidence. A seller’s short advert title is not enough. The same discipline applies to the Peugeot, because its petrol and diesel cars have different inspection priorities.

Peugeot RCZ: what you get
Model range and performance
Carbuyer’s 2017 summary describes the RCZ as a coupe sold from 2009 to 2015. In the UK, commonly encountered versions include a 1.6-litre petrol in 156bhp and 200bhp forms, plus a 2.0-litre diesel producing 163bhp. The later RCZ R produces 266bhp. The period review recorded 0–62mph in 8.3 seconds for the entry petrol, 7.6 seconds for the 200bhp petrol and 8.7 seconds for the diesel.

Why buyers like the RCZ
The RCZ’s main advantage is that it looks unlike the mainstream coupes around it. Its roof treatment and compact proportions give it genuine presence without requiring a high-performance trim. Carbuyer describes strong grip, little body lean and involving front-wheel-drive handling. That combination makes an ordinary road drive feel more special than the power figures alone suggest.

Front-wheel drive can also make the car’s behaviour predictable for drivers who prefer a direct, nose-led response rather than the rear-biased feel associated with some performance coupes. It is not a substitute for a careful test drive: worn tyres, tired dampers or a misaligned front end can disguise the model’s intended balance.
Where the RCZ feels dated
Carbuyer notes that the interior materials and technology were beginning to look old beside newer rivals. That does not make every cabin unpleasant, but it changes the ownership proposition. Check the condition of switchgear, displays, trim and seats rather than assuming a low odometer reading means the interior is sound. You are buying a design-led coupe whose cabin electronics come from an earlier period, not a current infotainment system.
RCZ inspection prompts
Autocar’s used-car guide lists several areas to examine. Start the engine from cold and listen for abnormal sounds. Operate the gearbox carefully on the exact version you are considering. Investigate front-suspension knocks, ABS warning-light wiring and other electrical faults. Inspect the boot lock for signs of water ingress and look closely at the jacking points for crushing or damage from incorrect lifting.

The same guide identifies diesel-related recall issues affecting certain model years. The presence of a recall reference is not proof that every diesel RCZ has the defect; confirm whether the particular registration was affected and whether the work was completed.
RAC’s qualitative ownership review records reports of squeaky brakes, rattling exhausts, interior noises, grinding during braking and front-suspension knocks. Those are useful prompts for an inspection, not a quantified failure rate. A quiet, well-documented car should not be rejected solely because an anecdotal list exists, but unexplained noises should not be written off as “normal RCZ character”.
Audi TT: what you get
Choose the generation before judging the model
The TT has a longer production history and a wider spread of specifications than the RCZ. Styling, cabin design, engine technology and transmission choices changed between generations. This gives buyers more chances to find a suitable car, but it also makes generic reliability claims misleading.
The Mk2 is the most useful like-for-like comparison with a later RCZ in many used-car searches. Audi’s 2012 UK brochure lists 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI engines, with quattro versions and manual or S tronic transmissions depending on trim. Confirm the exact engine code and gearbox from the registration documents and vehicle-identification information, not only from the advert.
Why the TT remains attractive
The TT offers a polished coupe format, a broad engine range and the option of four-wheel drive on relevant variants. A manual Mk2 can provide the straightforward ownership experience many used buyers want, while an S tronic car may appeal to drivers who prioritise automated shifting. Those are different risk and maintenance decisions, not simply two ways to drive the same car.
The premium presentation can make the TT feel more substantial than an RCZ, but premium trim does not remove the need for inspection. A higher original price can mean more expensive components when they eventually need attention, and a neglected service history can outweigh any perceived badge advantage.

Mk2 TT inspection prompts
Autocar’s Mk2 buying guide places particular emphasis on servicing and timing-belt replacement where the specific engine requires it. Ask for invoices or other documentary evidence rather than accepting a verbal assurance that the belt was changed. The guide also flags possible S tronic mechatronic and clutch problems, and recommends checking the suspension and steering.
A separate buying guide identifies cold-start rattle on certain 2.0 TFSI cars and mechatronic risk on some 1.8 TFSI S tronic cars. These observations are variant-specific prompts, not a prediction that every car will fail. Have a marque specialist match the symptom, engine and gearbox to the correct technical advice before agreeing a price.
RCZ and TT compared by the things that matter
Driving character
The RCZ is the more obviously individual choice. Its front-wheel-drive layout, strong grip and limited body lean are central to its appeal. The TT offers a more established premium-coupe presentation and, in selected versions, quattro traction. Neither description tells you how a particular car drives after years of tyre changes, suspension wear and missed servicing, so a road test remains essential.

Do not compare the 266bhp RCZ R with an entry-level TT, or a 156bhp RCZ with a TTS, and then draw a model-wide conclusion. Match powertrain, gearbox and drivetrain first. The figures available for the RCZ come from a period review; equivalent performance depends on which TT generation and trim you are considering.
Cabin and technology
The RCZ’s cabin technology is the older-feeling of the two in the cited reviews. A TT may deliver a more premium impression, but equipment varies substantially by year and trim. Test every screen, control, audio function, climate setting and warning-light behaviour in the actual car.
Practicality
Both are compact coupes, so inspect the loading area and access rather than relying on brochure descriptions. Check whether the seats, boot and storage meet your normal use, and look for water ingress around the RCZ boot lock. A car that is awkward for your regular journeys is not a bargain merely because it has a low asking price.

Economy and ownership cost
Carbuyer reported that the TT was slightly more economical than the RCZ in its period comparison, while also costing more when new. That is not a current fuel-cost calculation. Real expenditure depends on engine, fuel type, annual mileage, insurance group, tax rules, tyre size, repairs and the condition of the example. A diesel may suit high-mileage motorway use but brings its own recall and maintenance questions; a petrol car may be simpler for short trips but still needs variant-specific checks.

A disciplined pre-purchase inspection
- Identify the exact car. Record the registration, model year, engine, power output, gearbox, drivetrain and mileage. Confirm that the advert, vehicle documents and service invoices all describe the same specification.
- Check the history before travelling. Look for dated invoices, scheduled servicing and evidence of timing-belt work where applicable. A stamped book without supporting detail is weaker evidence than itemised records.
- Inspect the body and lifting points. Check panel alignment, paint differences, wheel damage, underbody condition and the RCZ’s jacking points. Look for moisture around the boot lock and in luggage-area trim.
- Start from cold. Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. Listen for abnormal rattles, including the cold-start rattle noted for certain 2.0 TFSI TTs, and watch for warning lights that fail to extinguish.
- Test the controls. Operate the manual clutch and every gear, or assess S tronic engagement, reverse selection and low-speed manoeuvring. Test steering assistance, brakes, lights, climate controls, windows and infotainment.
- Drive on varied roads. Include smooth and uneven surfaces. Listen for front-suspension knocks, feel for steering pull or vibration, check braking for grinding or judder and confirm that the gearbox behaves consistently when cold and warm.
- Scan for stored codes. A basic OBD-II reader may reveal diagnostic codes, but it cannot evaluate the whole vehicle and does not replace a professional inspection.
- Verify recalls and MOT history. Use the GOV.UK recall and MOT services with the registration number; if the registration is unavailable, the recall lookup can use manufacturer, model and year. GOV.UK states that safety-recall repairs are usually carried out without charge and that a vehicle with a serious safety defect should not be driven.
- Get an independent inspection. Ask a competent garage or marque specialist to inspect the exact engine and transmission, then use any faults found to renegotiate or walk away.
What to do when you find a warning sign
Engine rattle or unusual noise
Do not diagnose by sound alone. Record whether the noise occurs only on a cold start, under load, at idle or during a gear change. On a TT, tell the specialist the engine and transmission because the cited buying guides distinguish certain 2.0 TFSI and 1.8 TFSI S tronic cases. On an RCZ, obtain a fault diagnosis and compare it with the service history before authorising work.
Transmission hesitation or harsh engagement
Repeat the test from cold and after the drive. Note delay selecting drive or reverse, clutch slip, judder, warning messages and changes between manual and automated modes. An S tronic symptom warrants specialist assessment for mechatronic or clutch problems; do not assume a software reset is a permanent repair.
Suspension, steering or braking noise
Locate the condition that triggers the noise: potholes, turning, braking or acceleration. RCZ guides and owner reports mention front-suspension knocks and brake noises; the TT guide also recommends checking suspension and steering. A pre-purchase lift can distinguish a worn consumable from evidence of broader neglect.

Photograph warning lights before switching the car off, scan for codes and ask for repair invoices. The RCZ inspection guidance specifically mentions ABS warning-light wiring and electrical faults. Clearing a light without finding its cause should be treated as an unresolved defect.

How to make the final choice
Choose the RCZ when the individual car earns it
Select the Peugeot when its design and front-drive handling are important to you, the exact engine suits your mileage, and the car has strong documentation and a clean inspection. A good RCZ can offer character that is difficult to match at the same money, but buying solely because it appears cheaper is risky when the service record is weak.
Choose the manual Mk2 TT as the conservative shortlist
A well-maintained manual Mk2 TT is the default recommendation in this comparison because it combines the TT’s established coupe feel with fewer automated-transmission complications than an S tronic example. This is a buying strategy, not a reliability statistic. Confirm belt requirements, servicing and the condition of suspension, steering and engine before purchase.
Walk away from either badge when the evidence is poor
Reject a car with unexplained warning lights, persistent mechanical noise, damaged lifting points, missing critical maintenance evidence or a seller unwilling to permit an independent inspection. Spending more on a documented, correctly maintained example is usually safer than saving money on deferred repairs.

For most shoppers, start with a documented manual Mk2 Audi TT and compare it with a similarly cared-for Peugeot RCZ. The TT is the easier all-round recommendation when you want a polished coupe and a broad choice of specifications.
