What the Peugeot RCZ does well—and where alternatives improve it
The RCZ remains appealing because it looks unlike most affordable used coupés. Its double-bubble roof, broad rear haunches and low nose give it a distinctive presence, while shared Peugeot/Citroën mechanical hardware can make it more accessible to maintain than an exotic sports car. Used reviews from Autotrader describe it as a budget alternative that matches rivals for style and equipment.
The compromises are equally important. The ride can be hard, especially on poor British roads, and the cabin does not feel as premium as an Audi TT. Autotrader also says the RCZ sold in insufficient numbers to provide much model-specific reliability data; the wider record is mixed rather than a clear verdict that every car is unreliable. On an older example, condition and history matter more than the badge.

Carbuyer lists the Audi TT, BMW 2 Series and Volkswagen Scirocco as direct rivals. It also places the sportier RCZ versions in the same shopping list as the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ. That makes the right replacement a question of priorities:

Audi TT: the polished, premium-feeling alternative
Why it suits an RCZ shopper
The Audi TT is the closest match if you like the RCZ’s compact, stylish shape but want a more finished product. Auto Express calls it the RCZ’s close double, while Autotrader describes it as more polished to drive and more premium inside. Build quality is a major part of the appeal, and the TT was available as both a coupé and a convertible.
Several generations exist, so identify the car accurately before comparing prices or equipment. Auto Express groups them as the 8N, 8J and 8S generations. Age, engine, gearbox and specification can change the ownership experience substantially; an early 8N is a very different proposition from a later 8S.
Driving and practicality trade-offs
The TT generally feels more composed than an RCZ, making it the better choice for motorway journeys or buyers who place a premium on cabin ambience. Optional four-wheel drive is available on some versions, adding all-weather traction but also more hardware to inspect and maintain.
Do not buy one expecting a genuinely useful four-seat car. Auto Express notes that the rear seats are very limited for adults. Treat them as occasional luggage or emergency seats and check how the front seats are positioned for your normal passengers. Review the factory tyre choice, too: a tyre with a sensible sidewall may make more difference to ride comfort than a specification sheet suggests.
Who should choose the TT?
- Drivers who want the most premium-feeling cabin in this group.
- Owners who value polished road manners over playful rear-drive balance.
- Buyers who would use a convertible as well as a coupé.
- Anyone prepared to pay more than an equivalent RCZ for condition and finish.
Volkswagen Scirocco: the everyday-use choice
Why it is easier to live with
The Scirocco is the sensible direction for someone who wants coupé styling without making every journey feel like a compromise. Auto Express highlights Volkswagen build quality, healthy usability, attractive styling and a wide engine range. That variety gives used buyers more scope to match fuel type, power and gearbox to their mileage.
Its driving experience is decent rather than especially exciting. Compared with an RCZ or a GT86, the Scirocco is less of a special-event sports car; its strength is the balance between appearance and ordinary transport. It is the model to investigate when commuting, carrying luggage and controlling running costs matter as much as cornering feel.

What to assess on a used Scirocco
- Choose the engine and transmission for your actual annual mileage, not only the advertised power figure.
- Check that the seating position, boot access and rear-seat space work for your household.
- Drive it on broken urban roads as well as smooth dual carriageways; a coupé’s wheel and tyre combination can materially affect comfort.
- Compare service documentation and tyre condition between otherwise similar cars.
The Scirocco is a strong RCZ alternative for usability, but not the obvious choice if your priority is the most communicative steering or a rear-wheel-drive chassis.
Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ: the rear-wheel-drive answer
Toyota GT86
The GT86 changes the brief more than any front-wheel-drive alternative. Auto Express describes a light body, rear-wheel drive and a 2.0-litre flat-four producing 197bhp. Its selling point is handling and driver involvement rather than straight-line dominance.
What Car? praises the handling and comfortable front seats but identifies limited grip, a cheap-feeling interior and rear seats that are not genuine four-seat accommodation. The low-grip character is deliberate: the chassis lets you explore balance and throttle control at road speeds without requiring a huge engine. Buyers expecting the shove of a turbocharged hot hatch may instead find the performance modest.
For a manual GT86, What Car? lists 36.2mpg on the NEDC test cycle and 33.2mpg on the WLTP cycle in its 2022 material. These are laboratory test-cycle figures, not a promise of real-world consumption. Driving style, traffic, tyres and weather will change what you see at the pump.

Subaru BRZ
The BRZ is essentially the same car, according to What Car?, with subtle suspension differences. The source says the BRZ has more front-end grip in corners. Supply and dealer coverage are smaller, so the nearest car may be farther away and the choice of specification narrower.
Because the fundamental layout is shared, compare the condition, equipment, tyre brand, service history and test-drive feel of individual cars. A clean, correctly maintained example is a better buy than choosing a badge on the assumption that one twin is universally superior.
What the twins are—and are not
- They are: compact, rear-wheel-drive driver’s cars with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre flat-four and useful front seats.
- They are not: spacious four-seaters, luxury coupes or effortless high-speed tourers.
- Choose them when: steering, balance and involvement matter more than interior richness or outright acceleration.
Nissan 370Z: the high-power, rear-drive alternative
The 370Z is the most direct answer if the RCZ’s compact-coupé shape interests you but its engines do not. Auto Express describes a 3.7-litre V6, rear-wheel-drive coupé/convertible that is enjoyable yet thirsty and less refined.

Its larger engine supplies a stronger, more immediate performance character than the GT86 or most RCZ versions. That comes with clear costs: fuel consumption, insurance and consumables can be higher, and the car is less relaxing on a long trip. It suits a driver who accepts those compromises for V6 sound and rear-drive power.

A powerful rear-drive coupé can have had a harder life than a commuter-focused model, so condition is especially important.
Other cars worth considering—and the brief they change
BMW 2 Series
Carbuyer names the BMW 2 Series as an RCZ rival. It gives buyers another premium compact-coupé route and can appeal if rear-wheel-drive availability, cabin quality or BMW ergonomics are more important than the RCZ’s unusual styling. Compare the exact generation and engine: “2 Series” covers a broad range of cars rather than one uniform specification.
BMW Z4
Auto Express identifies the BMW Z4 as a distinctive alternative if an open-top car is acceptable. It is not a like-for-like fixed-roof replacement, but it broadens the choice for a buyer who values two-seat roadster character over rear-seat utility.
Mazda MX-5
Auto Express’s GT86 coverage names the Mazda MX-5 as another open-top, driver-focused option. It is a smaller, two-seat interpretation of the brief. Consider it when light weight and roof-down enjoyment matter more than carrying people or luggage.
Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang is described by Auto Express as a heavier, pricier route to rear-wheel drive. It makes sense for buyers who want a larger car and a more substantial performance image, but it changes the size, running-cost and parking proposition substantially.
RCZ engines and performance figures to put in context
Carbuyer’s review lists the common RCZ engines as a 1.6-litre petrol with 156 or 200bhp and a 2.0-litre diesel with 163bhp. It gives the RCZ R as 266bhp. Auto Express describes the RCZ R as a 270bhp version. These are source-specific figures; the 266bhp and 270bhp descriptions should not be silently merged into one claimed output.

Carbuyer also published historical economy and tax examples: 54mpg and £110 annual road tax for the diesel, and 44mpg and £145 annual road tax for the entry petrol. Those figures belong to the review period and should not be used as current UK tax rates or present-day ownership forecasts. Current Vehicle Excise Duty depends on registration date, emissions rules and the specific car.

Regardless of which alternative you choose, an older coupé deserves a methodical inspection. For the RCZ itself, Auto Express identifies several specific areas to examine.

- Inspect the aluminium roof rails. Look for corrosion rather than assuming the roof is cosmetic and maintenance-free.
- Check every door and window seal. Loose seals can create wind noise and may indicate that previous repairs were not completed correctly.
- Confirm the puncture equipment. The RCZ did not have a spare wheel as standard; it came with a tyre-inflation kit. Auto Express reports that Peugeot offered a £250 spare-wheel kit, a historical price rather than a current quote. Check what is actually in the boot and verify exact fitment before buying a replacement Peugeot RCZ spare wheel kit.
- Read the service history against the car’s condition. Match invoices, mileage, tyre wear and interior wear. A stamped book without supporting work is weaker evidence than detailed receipts.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Autotrader says model-specific reliability data is limited, so a pre-purchase inspection is a sensible way to identify deferred maintenance.
Apply the same discipline to an Audi TT, Scirocco, GT86, BRZ or 370Z. Check cold-start behaviour, warning lights, clutch and gearbox operation, suspension noise, brake condition, tyre age and evidence of accident repair. A specialist inspection is particularly valuable for a modified or enthusiast-owned car.
How to choose between the alternatives
Choose refinement first
Start with the Audi TT. Its stronger cabin presentation and more polished road manners address the RCZ’s clearest weaknesses. Accept the higher typical purchase cost and the fact that rear seats are for occasional use.
Choose daily usability first
Look at the Volkswagen Scirocco. Its broad engine range and practical orientation make it easier to tailor to commuting and family use. Do not expect GT86-level rear-drive involvement.
Choose handling first
Test a Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ back to back if possible. Their rear-wheel-drive balance is the biggest dynamic departure from the RCZ. Evaluate grip, ride and seating realistically; neither is a true four-seater.
Choose engine character first
Try the Nissan 370Z. The 3.7-litre V6 supplies the strongest performance identity here, but budget for fuel and accept less refinement.

Choose style and value first
Keep the RCZ on the shortlist. Its distinctive design and used-market positioning remain compelling, provided you inspect the known mirror, roof-rail, seal and puncture-equipment issues and buy on condition.
Questions buyers commonly ask
Is the Audi TT better than the Peugeot RCZ?
It is generally the better choice for refinement, cabin quality and polished driving manners, according to Autotrader and Auto Express. The RCZ can make more sense when distinctive styling and a lower used-car entry point matter more.
Which alternative has rear-wheel drive?
The Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ and Nissan 370Z are rear-wheel drive. Some Audi TT versions offer four-wheel drive, but that is a different system and specification-dependent.

Are the GT86 and BRZ practical four-seaters?
No. What Car? says their rear seats are not genuine four-seat accommodation. Treat them as occasional-use spaces or extra luggage capacity.
Should I buy an RCZ diesel for economy?
Carbuyer’s historical review figures show 54mpg and £110 annual road tax for the diesel, but those are review-era numbers, not current costs. Decide from your mileage, driving pattern, registration date and the individual car’s condition rather than relying on those old figures.
Does every RCZ have a spare wheel?
No. Auto Express says the standard equipment was a tyre-inflation kit, with a spare-wheel kit offered separately. Inspect the actual car and confirm replacement-kit fitment.
