Its three-motor all-wheel-drive system, 816-hp output, 2.5-second 0–100 km/h claim and 310 km/h top speed put it closer to a compact electric hypercar than a conventional hot hatch. The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is less powerful, but it is the more concrete road-car proposition: Renault plans a numbered run of 1,980 cars for showroom arrival in 2027, subject to final homologation and production timing.
That distinction matters more than the headline power gap. Peugeot has shown a 2026 performance concept with no announced production program, while Renault has described a defined two-seat car, a production volume and an intended launch window. The comparison below separates confirmed plans from manufacturer targets and explains what each layout means on the road.

| Measure | Peugeot E-T16 concept | Renault 5 Turbo 3E | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motors and drive | Three motors: one front and two rear; all-wheel drive with torque vectoring | Two electric motors integrated at the rear wheels; rear-wheel drive | Peugeot can distribute torque across both axles; Renault is built around rear-drive balance and controlled oversteer. |
| Maximum power | 816 hp | 555 hp on Renault’s current UK page; an earlier Renault release quoted 540 hp | The E-T16 has a 261-hp advantage using the current published Renault figure. |
| Maximum torque | 9,600 Nm, manufacturer claim | 4,800 Nm, manufacturer claim | These are headline motor/system figures, not wheel torque or an independently measured road figure. |
| Battery and electrical architecture | 85 kWh battery; 800 V system | 70 kWh usable battery; 800 V system | Peugeot quotes the larger pack; both cars use high-voltage charging hardware. |
| 0–100 km/h | 2.5 seconds | Under 3.5 seconds | Peugeot’s claimed launch is quicker. |
| 0–62 mph | 2.5 seconds (equivalent metric) | Under 3.5 seconds | Renault’s UK material uses the 0–62 mph wording; its final homologated result may change. |
| Higher-speed performance | 0–300 km/h in 16 seconds; 310 km/h top speed | 0–200 km/h in under 9 seconds; 270 km/h track top speed | The E-T16 targets hypercar-level straight-line speed, while the Renault remains exceptionally quick for a small two-seater. |
| Range | Up to 400 km combined WLTP | More than 400 km estimated WLTP | Both are manufacturer figures; Renault labels its number an estimate pending homologation. |
| DC charging | 10–80% in under 15 minutes | Up to 350 kW; 15–80% in 15 minutes on a suitable charger | The headline times are similar, but the state-of-charge windows are not identical. |
| Published dimensions | Peugeot has not published full dimensions on the cited concept page; the body is an E-208-derived hyperhatch design | 4.08 m long, 2.03 m wide, 1.38 m tall, with a 2.57 m wheelbase | Renault has specified a road-car package; Peugeot has so far emphasized concept design and performance. |
| Explicit sustained-track claim | More than three consecutive Nürburgring laps in Performance mode without power derating | No equivalent lap-duration claim in Renault’s cited release | Peugeot makes the stronger published claim about repeated track running. |
The table combines current manufacturer claims, not independent tests. Renault’s 555-hp figure is the current UK specification; the previously quoted 540-hp figure should not be mixed into a like-for-like calculation. Likewise, a claimed range or charging time is not a guarantee for every temperature, charger, speed or driving style.

Which car is faster?
Acceleration and outright speed
On the published figures, the Peugeot wins every straight-line comparison supplied for both cars. Its claimed 0–100 km/h time is 2.5 seconds, versus Renault’s “under 3.5 seconds.” At the upper end, Peugeot quotes 0–300 km/h in 16 seconds and a 310 km/h maximum. Renault quotes 0–200 km/h in under nine seconds and a 270 km/h track top speed.
That is not a small advantage. The E-T16’s extra motor and 261 hp provide more traction and a larger power reserve once speeds rise. The Renault’s figures are still extraordinary for a car only 4.08 metres long, but its brief is not to beat the Peugeot in a maximum-speed contest. It is intended to make a small rear-drive car feel dramatic on a road, rally stage or circuit.
What the Nürburgring claim adds
Peak acceleration can be achieved in a short launch. Peugeot also says the E-T16 can complete more than three consecutive Nürburgring laps in Performance mode without power derating. That is a specific endurance claim about thermal control, not a lap-time record. It suggests Peugeot is designing the battery cooling and motor management for repeated hard use rather than a single publicity run.
Renault describes the Turbo 3E as a car for rallying, drifting and track driving adapted for the road, but the cited release does not give an equivalent number of laps without derating. The absence of that figure does not prove the Renault cannot sustain performance; it means Peugeot has made the more explicit public claim.
Why the numbers are not a road test
Neither manufacturer figure is an independent instrumented comparison. Acceleration depends on launch software, tyre temperature, surface grip, battery state of charge, ambient temperature and the exact test protocol. The two brands also use slightly different terminology: Peugeot publishes 0–100 km/h, while Renault’s UK page uses 0–62 mph. Those speeds are effectively equivalent for this purpose, but the final homologated Renault result remains subject to change.
Production status: concept versus committed limited run
Peugeot E-T16
Peugeot presents the E-T16 as a 2026 all-electric reinterpretation of the 205 T16 and as an ultra-performance vision of the next-generation E-208. The official material does not announce a production quantity, a showroom date or an order process. It should therefore be treated as a technology and design concept, not as a car that can currently be reserved.
That status also limits what can be concluded about final weight, crash certification, interior equipment, pricing, dimensions and real-world range. Concept specifications can be revised before a road-legal derivative appears, and Peugeot has not said that this exact vehicle will enter series production.

Renault 5 Turbo 3E
Renault says the 5 Turbo 3E will reach showrooms during 2027 in a numbered production run of 1,980 cars. The plan remains subject to final homologation and production timing, so it is a commitment with conditions rather than a completed delivery schedule. Even so, it gives the Renault a level of commercial definition the Peugeot currently lacks.
The numbered run also changes the buyer’s question. Prospective owners are not choosing between two regular-volume hatchbacks; they would be seeking access to a tightly limited, two-seat electric mini-supercar. Availability, allocation and final market specifications will matter as much as the headline performance.
How the electric powertrains differ
Peugeot: three motors and all-wheel torque control
The E-T16 uses one electric motor on the front axle and two at the rear. The result is all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, allowing the control system to vary drive force between wheels as well as between axles. In principle, that gives Peugeot more tools for launching cleanly, managing corner-exit traction and balancing the car when grip changes.
Peugeot pairs the system with an 800 V electrical architecture, steer-by-wire and its Hypersquare control interface. Steer-by-wire removes a conventional mechanical steering connection, so the final calibration of steering ratio, feedback and fail-safe systems will be important to the driving experience. The published concept description identifies the hardware and control philosophy, but it does not provide road-test impressions or final production calibration.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Renault: rear-wheel drive with motors at the rear wheels
The Turbo 3E places two electric motors directly at the rear wheels on a dedicated rear-wheel-drive platform. Renault says this arrangement frees boot space and lowers the centre of gravity. It also gives each driven rear wheel independent electric control, a useful foundation for drift and rotation without a front motor adding mass or front-axle drive.
Renault’s engineering brief is unusually clear: the car is “a beast of a car built for rallying, drift and track performance, adapted for the road.” That wording describes a different kind of speed from Peugeot’s all-wheel-drive assault. The Renault should feel more willing to rotate under power, while the Peugeot’s extra driven axle should make maximum traction easier to access when accelerating out of slower corners.
Torque figures need careful reading
Peugeot’s 9,600 Nm and Renault’s 4,800 Nm are manufacturer headline figures. They should not be read as torque measured at the tyre contact patch or compared directly with a conventional engine’s crankshaft torque. Electric motors, reduction gears, software limits and the point at which torque is measured all affect the number. The useful comparison is the layout: three motors and torque vectoring give Peugeot more total drive-system authority, while two rear motors support Renault’s compact rear-drive character.

Battery, range and charging
Capacity and voltage
Peugeot specifies an 85 kWh battery and Renault a 70 kWh usable battery. Both use an 800 V architecture, which can support high charging power while keeping current lower than an equivalent lower-voltage system. The larger Peugeot pack may provide more energy reserve, but capacity alone does not establish greater driving range because efficiency, mass, tyres, aerodynamics and software also matter.

Range claims
Peugeot quotes up to 400 km on the combined WLTP cycle. Renault quotes more than 400 km as an estimated WLTP figure and identifies it as pending homologation. Those statements are close enough that neither car can be declared the range winner from the current information. “Up to” and “estimated” are important qualifications: actual distance will vary with temperature, speed, elevation, wheel choice, traffic and use of heating or air conditioning.
Fast charging
Peugeot says the E-T16 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 15 minutes. Renault says the Turbo 3E can accept up to 350 kW and go from 15 to 80 percent in 15 minutes when connected to a suitable charger. The times look similar, but they cover different starting states of charge, so they are not an identical test. Charging power is also limited by the vehicle’s battery temperature and the station’s available output; a 350 kW sign does not guarantee that rate throughout a session.
For road-trip planning, the practical questions will be the final production charging curve, cold-weather performance, preconditioning procedure and the availability of compatible high-power stations. Peugeot and Renault have not supplied all of those details in the cited material.
Chassis hardware and driving character
E-T16: control, grip and repeatability
Peugeot specifies 380 mm brake discs, 21-inch Michelin tyres and a vertical hydraulic handbrake. The handbrake signals that the concept is not intended to be a sterile all-wheel-drive missile; Peugeot is incorporating a deliberate mechanism for rotation and driver involvement. Its Track mode, torque-vectoring system and thermal-management claims point toward a car that can be driven hard for several laps rather than only demonstrated in a straight line.
The combination of four driven contact patches, steer-by-wire and active torque distribution should make the E-T16 adaptable. In low-grip conditions, the front motor can help pull the car through a corner. On a dry track, software can apportion power to help the driver turn or stabilize the car. Until a production specification and independent driving evaluation exist, those remain engineering intentions rather than verified behavior.
Turbo 3E: low centre of gravity and rear-drive attitude
Renault builds the Turbo 3E around a carbon superstructure and a dedicated rear-drive platform. The rear in-wheel motors reduce the need for a conventional driveshaft and front drive hardware, while Renault says the layout lowers the centre of gravity and leaves more room for the boot. The car remains strictly a two-door, two-seater.

Rear-drive electric cars can make throttle control especially expressive because torque arrives immediately and each rear wheel can be managed independently. That suits the Turbo 3E’s rally and drift mission. It can be entertaining at lower speeds where a driver can use rotation, steering and throttle together, even if it gives away launch traction and maximum power to the Peugeot.

What is known about the Renault
Renault publishes a 4.08-metre length, 2.03-metre width, 1.38-metre height and 2.57-metre wheelbase. Those dimensions explain the car’s unusual stance: it is short enough to retain a city-car footprint, exceptionally wide for its length and low enough to look like a purpose-built sports machine rather than a normal supermini.
There are only two seats and two doors. That makes the Turbo 3E a focused recreational car, not a substitute for a practical Renault 5 E-Tech or a four-seat performance hatch. The stated boot-space benefit from the rear-motor layout helps luggage carrying, but Renault has not published a boot volume in the cited release.
What is not yet published for the Peugeot
Peugeot has not published full dimensions on the cited E-T16 page. The concept is described as an E-208-derived hyperhatch, but that does not establish its final exterior size, seating count, luggage capacity or access arrangements. Its production practicality therefore cannot be compared fairly with Renault’s defined two-seat package.
For shoppers, this is a crucial difference: Renault has supplied enough information to understand the physical proposition, while Peugeot has supplied a performance and design preview. Any claim that one has more cabin room, a larger boot or easier daily usability would go beyond the published evidence.
Why the names matter: two different heritage strategies
Peugeot and the 205 T16
The E-T16 name deliberately invokes the Peugeot 205 T16, which won the World Rally Championship manufacturers’ and drivers’ titles in 1985 and 1986. The “E” denotes electric power. Peugeot is therefore using the concept to translate a specific rally legend into an electric performance language: all-wheel traction, compact proportions, extreme output and motorsport credibility.

Renault positions the Turbo 3E as a modern reboot of the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2. It sits alongside the regular Renault 5 E-Tech and Alpine A290 in the wider group range, but it is not simply a high-output trim of either model. Renault calls it the first electric “mini-supercar,” using the familiar hatchback silhouette as the starting point for a much wider, lower and more focused machine.

Renault brand CEO Fabrice Cambolive describes the project as creating a new category of electric mini-supercars and links it to the brand’s tradition of boldness and innovation. That positioning explains the limited numbered run and the decision to keep the car strictly two-seat: exclusivity and character are part of the product, not incidental compromises.
Which one should matter to you?
Choose the E-T16 concept as the technical benchmark
The Peugeot is the compelling answer if your question is simply which car represents the more extreme engineering statement. It has more power, a faster claimed launch, a higher top speed, three motors, all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, an 800 V system and an explicit multi-lap thermal-performance claim. It is the car to watch for evidence of how far Peugeot Sport wants to push an electric E-208-derived platform.
However, there is currently no announced production run or showroom date. Treat it as a concept until Peugeot provides a build program, road-legal specification and customer pathway.
Choose the Turbo 3E as the more tangible road car
The Renault is the stronger proposition for someone interested in an actual limited-production purchase. Its 2027 showroom target, numbered run of 1,980 cars, published dimensions, two-seat layout and defined rear-drive platform make the idea more concrete. It sacrifices headline acceleration and top speed, but its rear-wheel-drive layout is specifically intended to deliver rally, drift and track character on public roads.
Its own uncertainties remain significant: final homologation, production timing, allocation, final range and the current power figure could all affect the delivered car. The manufacturer’s estimated WLTP range and performance figures should be read accordingly.
What remains unknown
A direct test will require information neither project has fully supplied. The most important missing data includes:
- Final kerb weight and weight distribution for both cars.
- Verified acceleration, braking and lap times measured under the same conditions.
- Battery usable capacity, charging curves and cold-weather charging behavior for the Peugeot.
- Final homologated range and charging performance for the Renault.
- Production pricing, market allocation and delivery dates for the Turbo 3E.
- Whether Peugeot will build the E-T16 at all, and if so, how closely a production car will follow the concept.
- Interior dimensions, luggage capacity and safety equipment for the E-T16.
Until those details arrive, the fairest comparison is between Peugeot’s technical ambition and Renault’s production commitment, not between two fully tested showroom cars.

The Peugeot E-T16 is the outright performance winner on the information available: it claims 816 hp, 2.5-second acceleration, 310 km/h and sustained Nürburgring running without power derating. Its three-motor all-wheel-drive system is the more elaborate answer to the question of maximum electric performance.
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is the more credible near-term road-car proposition. Renault has specified a 1,980-car numbered run for 2027, a compact two-seat body and a rear-drive layout built for rally, drift and track use. It is slower and less powerful on paper, but it is the one with a stated path from concept to customer. Calling the Peugeot a production rival would be premature until Peugeot announces that path.
