In a recent comparison of similarly priced crossovers, the self-charging hybrid used the least fuel, the diesel was close behind and the petrol model cost the most to fuel. That result is specific to those vehicles, prices and test conditions. Your cheapest choice depends on purchase price, annual kilometres, traffic, fuel prices, servicing, insurance, repairs and resale value.
The practical answer is to compare like-for-like cars over your planned ownership period. Use real local fuel prices and consumption, then add the ownership costs that a fuel-only comparison leaves out.

What the South African comparison actually found
AutoTrader South Africa’s 6 October 2026 comparison looked at three crossovers priced at roughly R460,000. It used reported real-world consumption and inland October fuel-price assumptions of R30.20 per litre for petrol and R31.90 per litre for diesel. The results favoured the hybrid on fuel spend at both 1,000 km and 2,000 km per month.

At 1,000 km per month, the hybrid’s estimated fuel bill was R269.60 lower than the diesel’s and R302 lower than the petrol model’s. At 2,000 km, those differences doubled to R539.20 and R604 respectively. Multiplying the table by 12 gives illustrative annual fuel spending of R16,670.40 for the hybrid, R19,905.60 for the diesel and R20,294.40 for the petrol example at 12,000 km a year. These are arithmetic extensions of the published assumptions, not guarantees for every driver.

The vehicles were not an identical laboratory test. AutoTrader identifies the Jaecoo’s 4.6 L/100 km as its own mixed-cycle road-test result from Johannesburg through the Drakensberg, while the table labels the comparison figures “real-world”. Do not present them as directly comparable factory-certified consumption figures. The model names, prices, fuel assumptions and test context must stay attached to the numbers. Fuel prices change the answer every month
South African fuel costs are not fixed for the life of a car. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) says adjustments are made monthly according to international oil prices, exchange rates and statutory levies. Its latest adjustment located for this comparison took effect on 7 October 2026.
- Petrol 93 increased by R3.12 per litre.
- Petrol 95 increased by R3.33 per litre.
- Diesel 0.05% sulphur rose by 284.380 cents per litre at wholesale.
- Diesel 0.005% sulphur rose by 324.380 cents per litre at wholesale.
Those are adjustment amounts, not the resulting retail pump prices. Petrol prices vary by zone, and diesel is published at wholesale; the price at an individual filling station can differ. Before calculating your own costs, check the effective regional schedule on the DMPR fuel-price page and its official announcement. Do not substitute the October adjustment amount for a pump price.
For example, the AutoTrader table’s R30.20 petrol and R31.90 diesel figures were inland October estimates used for its illustration. If your province, town or month has different prices, the rand ranking can narrow or widen even when the litres consumed stay the same.
How to calculate your own fuel bill
The basic calculation is transparent:
Monthly fuel cost = (monthly kilometres × consumption in L/100 km ÷ 100) × local price per litre.
Apply it separately to each vehicle using the same distance and a realistic price for the fuel grade it requires. In the published comparison, the hybrid calculation is 1,000 × 4.6 ÷ 100 × R30.20 = R1,389.20. The diesel calculation is 1,000 × 5.2 ÷ 100 × R31.90 = R1,658.80.

Use your actual driving mix
Record a representative month rather than relying on a brochure headline. Include commuting, school runs, errands, weekend trips, traffic queues, hills and highway kilometres. A car that excels in low-speed traffic may not show the same advantage on a fast, lightly loaded motorway journey. Conversely, a diesel’s efficiency may be more valuable when the vehicle spends most of its time covering long distances at a steady speed.
Convert the result to the ownership period
Multiply the monthly result by the number of months you expect to keep the car, then test low, expected and high mileage. A 1,000 km month and a 2,000 km month produce very different savings, as the comparison demonstrates. If your annual distance is irregular, use a three-year or five-year kilometre estimate rather than one unusually busy month.
Model fuel-price uncertainty
Run the calculation with a lower, central and higher fuel-price assumption. Monthly adjustments, exchange-rate movements and oil prices can change the outcome. A powertrain that saves a few hundred rand in the comparison may not recover a large purchase-price premium if you drive only short distances.
Which powertrain suits which type of driving?
Hybrid: strongest case in stop-start urban traffic
The cited hybrid example uses an electric motor to assist during low-speed running and repeated acceleration. AutoTrader presents this type of system as particularly suited to urban commuting, where regenerative braking and electric assistance can reduce fuel use in stop-start conditions. That is a use-case advantage, not proof that every hybrid will beat every diesel on an open road.
A self-charging hybrid does not normally require you to plug in. Its battery is replenished through the vehicle’s control system and regenerative braking. Confirm the specific model’s warranty, battery coverage and servicing requirements with the dealer; the comparison does not establish a common battery-replacement cost.
Diesel: compelling for long distances and heavy use
AutoTrader positions the Kia diesel example as its long-distance option. Diesel efficiency can suit drivers who regularly travel between cities, cover high annual mileage or carry loads. The advantage depends on the actual engine, gearbox, route and fuel price. Modern diesels can also have emissions hardware and maintenance requirements that should be included in a long-term budget.

If towing is important, check the manufacturer’s approved towing mass, service schedule and dealer support for the exact derivative. Fuel economy alone cannot tell you whether a vehicle is suitable for a trailer or caravan.
Petrol: often the simplest low-mileage choice
Petrol cars can make financial sense when the purchase price and monthly instalment matter more than maximum fuel economy. AutoTrader’s June 2026 discussion says a lower petrol entry price can suit low-mileage drivers. Petrol may also be easier to justify when most journeys are short and annual kilometres are modest, because the fuel saving from a more expensive hybrid or diesel has fewer kilometres over which to repay the difference.
That does not make every petrol car cheaper to own. Compare the actual purchase price, consumption, insurance group, service plan and resale outlook for the vehicles you are considering.

A fuel table answers one question: how much energy the car is expected to consume under the stated assumptions. “Cheapest to run” normally means a broader cost calculation.
Purchase price and finance
Start with the on-the-road price and the deposit, interest rate, term and fees that determine your instalment. In the three-car example, the hybrid and diesel were each listed at R459,900, while the petrol crossover was R471,400. A different trim, promotion or finance offer can reverse that relationship. Compare vehicles with similar space, safety equipment and specification before attributing a saving to the powertrain.
Scheduled servicing
Obtain the manufacturer’s service intervals and written service-plan price for the exact derivative. Ask what is included: oil, filters, brake components, fluids, labour and inspection items. A general statement that one powertrain is cheaper to service is not a substitute for a model-specific quote.

Tyres, brakes and consumables
Wheel size, tyre brand, vehicle mass and driving style can materially change replacement costs. Hybrid regenerative braking may alter how often friction brakes are used, but tyre and brake wear still depend on the vehicle and driver. Price the correct tyre size and a realistic replacement interval rather than using the cheapest available product.

Request insurance quotes using the same driver profile, address, excess and cover level for each vehicle. A higher replacement value, repair complexity or theft risk can outweigh a small fuel saving. Include annual licensing and registration charges where they differ by vehicle.
Repairs, parts and dealer support
AutoTrader advises buyers to check parts availability, repair turnaround and whether a courtesy car is provided by local dealers. These are practical risk checks, not measured costs for the three models. Ask the dealer how long common service parts take to arrive, where hybrid-system work is performed, and what happens if a component is unavailable.
The Automobile Association says its AA-Kinsey Report uses written local-dealer parts quotes including VAT. The AA Reports catalogue can point you to parts-cost evidence, but the accessible page does not provide current, matched maintenance totals for this three-car comparison.
Battery exposure in a hybrid
A hybrid’s high-voltage battery is a long-term ownership consideration. Confirm the battery warranty period, mileage limit, exclusions and the price and availability of replacement modules for the exact model. The June AutoTrader article raises possible battery-replacement exposure but does not provide a measured replacement bill. Treat any claimed payback period that ignores this uncertainty as incomplete.
Resale value
Estimate resale only from comparable age, mileage, condition and specification. A forecast is not a guaranteed sale price, especially for a newer powertrain with limited local history. Include the expected sale proceeds as a reduction in total ownership cost rather than assuming the vehicle is worth a fixed percentage of its purchase price.

A fair comparison worksheet
Use the following process before choosing between specific cars:
- Choose comparable vehicles. Match body size, seating, safety equipment, luggage capacity and trim as closely as possible.
- Record the full purchase cost. Include list price, delivery, registration, accessories, deposit, interest and finance fees.
- Measure your driving. Estimate annual kilometres and split them between urban traffic, highway travel, hills, towing and heavily loaded trips.
- Get local fuel prices. Use the current regional petrol grade and diesel price, noting that diesel’s official figure may be wholesale.
- Use credible consumption inputs. Prefer a comparable local test or your own logged fuel use; keep factory-certified and real-world figures clearly labelled.
- Calculate fuel spend. Apply the formula to each vehicle at low, expected and high annual mileage.
- Collect written ownership quotes. Ask for service plans, scheduled-service prices, insurance, tyres, brakes, warranty terms and likely repair support.
- Check hybrid or diesel-specific risks. Confirm battery coverage for a hybrid and emissions-system requirements for a diesel.
- Estimate resale conservatively. Use evidence for the exact model and ownership period, and show the assumption.
- Compare the total. Add purchase and running costs, subtract resale, and divide by months or kilometres if you want a monthly or per-kilometre view.
This method prevents a small fuel advantage from being mistaken for a guaranteed ownership saving.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using different vehicle classes. A smaller petrol crossover may consume less than a larger hybrid, even if the fuel type appears less efficient.
- Mixing test methods. A road-tested real-world result and a laboratory certification are not interchangeable.
- Quoting a fuel adjustment as a fuel price. The DMPR’s October figures describe increases, not the retail price at your pump.
- Ignoring fuel grade. Petrol 93 and 95 have different prices, and the correct grade depends on the manufacturer’s specification.
- Assuming diesel wholesale equals pump price. Retail margins and location affect what you pay.
- Promising a universal hybrid payback period. Payback changes with the purchase-price gap, annual kilometres, fuel prices, maintenance and resale.
- Leaving out financing. Interest can exceed the fuel saving on a vehicle with a higher purchase price.
- Overlooking downtime. A delayed part or lack of a courtesy car has a real cost for a commuter or business user.
So, which is cheapest for you?
Choose the hybrid direction when
- Your driving is dominated by urban stop-start traffic.
- You cover enough kilometres for the fuel saving to matter.
- The purchase-price difference is small and the battery warranty and dealer support are satisfactory.
Choose the diesel direction when
- You regularly drive long distances or carry substantial loads.
- The exact diesel model has strong local servicing and parts support.
- You have checked emissions-system maintenance, towing limits and the current diesel price.
Choose the petrol direction when
- Your annual mileage is low or unpredictable.
- A lower purchase price and instalment are more important than maximum fuel economy.
- The petrol model’s insurance, service and resale figures remain competitive after a full quote.
In the October 2026 illustration, the hybrid wins on estimated fuel spend, the diesel follows, and the petrol example is slightly higher. That ranking should be treated as a starting point for a vehicle-specific calculation, not a national verdict. No available evidence establishes one powertrain as the cheapest for every South African driver or vehicle class.

Questions buyers commonly ask
Is a hybrid always cheaper than diesel?
No. The cited comparison favours its hybrid example, but route, mileage, vehicle size, diesel price and maintenance can change the result. Compare the exact cars rather than fuel labels.
How many kilometres do I need to drive for a hybrid to pay back?
There is no universal threshold. Calculate the purchase-price difference, annual fuel saving and all relevant ownership costs for your models. A fuel-only payback omits finance, servicing, insurance, repairs and resale.
Are the published consumption figures official laboratory ratings?
Not all of them. AutoTrader identifies the Jaecoo figure as a mixed-cycle road-test result and describes the table as real-world. Keep the test method with every number.
Can I use the October 2026 DMPR adjustment as today’s pump price?
No. It is the amount of the monthly adjustment. Check the effective regional schedule and the price displayed by your filling station.
What should I ask a dealer before buying a hybrid?
Ask for the high-voltage battery warranty and exclusions, service intervals and prices, trained repair facilities, parts lead times, courtesy-car policy and the expected procedure if the vehicle is immobilised.
