The headline about Perth petrol rising by up to 24 cents per litre refers to a report published on 9 August 2022, not a current price alert. The report’s article page is subscriber-gated, so its station list, affected fuel grades and calculation cannot be verified from the accessible text. For a later, dated update, WA Consumer Protection reported a separate FuelWatch forecast for 30 September 2026; that forecast has also passed and should not be treated as today’s price.
What did the 24-cent Perth petrol headline refer to?
The West Australian published Kellie Balaam’s report on 9 August 2022 with a headline claiming petrol could rise by up to 24 cents per litre. The accessible article page does not expose the subscriber-gated story, so the headline alone does not establish which stations or grades were affected, when the change was expected, or how the figure was calculated. That makes the 24-cent figure a historical headline claim—not a price forecast for Perth now. It should not be used to decide whether to fill up today.
What was the later Perth forecast?
In a media release dated 29 September 2026, WA Consumer Protection reported FuelWatch’s forecast that Perth’s regular-unleaded average would increase by 12 cents per litre, reaching 238.5 cents per litre from 6am on 30 September 2026. The release also said 24 sites had ULP below 222 cents per litre before the forecast rise. These figures describe that dated forecast and the preceding day; they are not current prices on 8 October 2026. See WA Consumer Protection’s release.

How to find the cheapest unleaded near you
- Open FuelWatch and use its mobile-compatible map to compare nearby service stations.
- Check the price for regular unleaded (ULP) and confirm that it applies on the day you plan to buy. WA Consumer Protection says same-day and next-day prices are available after 2:30pm.
- Compare the station’s price with the distance and any detour. A lower listed price may not save money if reaching the station adds substantial driving.
Local lows can vary by area: WA Consumer Protection’s September 2026 release compared Perth’s east, south and north and reported different low-price stations in each. A citywide average or a station price from another suburb may not reflect the best option for your route.
Should you fill up before a forecast rise?
Check FuelWatch for the relevant day and compare the price with the cost of driving to a cheaper station. If a forecast indicates a rise and you need fuel, filling up before it takes effect may be worth considering; the 2026 release does not support treating an old headline as evidence of a rise today. WA Consumer Protection advises drivers to buy only the fuel they need and not to stockpile.
