Petrol Cars You Can Buy Below ₹9 Lakh in India: Verified Variants and Prices

A verified shortlist of petrol cars below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom in India, with model-range limits, transmission caveats and steps to check the real on-road cost.

Short answer: using the manufacturers’ displayed ex-showroom prices, the most defensible petrol shortlist below ₹9 lakh is the Hyundai Aura, Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS, selected Hyundai Exter variants, and selected Nissan Magnite manual or AMT variants. A selected Hyundai i20 variant may also qualify, but the i20 range extends well above the limit. These are not guaranteed on-road prices: registration, taxes, insurance and local charges can push the final amount above ₹9 lakh.

What “under ₹9 lakh” means here

The figures in this guide are manufacturer-displayed ex-showroom prices. Ex-showroom is the vehicle price before the costs added when you register and drive the car: road tax, registration, insurance, FASTag, handling or other dealer-listed charges and any accessories. Hyundai states that the final on-road amount depends on the purchase and registration location, and that prices can change without notice.

Therefore, two different buying questions need two different shortlists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ex-showroom ceiling: a variant priced below ₹9 lakh on the manufacturer’s list can be considered, subject to current availability.
  • Complete on-road ceiling: the car must have enough headroom below ₹9 lakh to absorb city-specific registration, insurance and other charges. The prices below alone cannot prove that a car will stay within that total.

If your ₹9 lakh is an on-road limit, treat every model below as a starting point for a local quotation rather than a final answer.

How to read the price figures correctly

A model’s displayed range is not a promise that every fuel, gearbox and equipment combination falls inside that range. The lower number is usually the entry point for the range shown by the manufacturer; the upper number may belong to a different engine, transmission or trim. For this reason, compare the exact variant name, not just the badge and starting price.

There is another important distinction in this list. Hyundai’s model finder figures can cover both petrol and CNG versions, while the question here is specifically about petrol cars. A range that fits the cap therefore tells you that the model has entries below the cap, but you must still confirm that the particular entry is petrol. The same check applies to manual versus automatic versions.

Prices are also location- and date-sensitive. Hyundai’s displayed prices can change without notice, and the Renault range information describes prices as ex-showroom for selected city limits and subject to change. A current dealer quotation is the only reliable way to establish what is orderable and payable in your city.

Current petrol shortlist below the ex-showroom ceiling

Model Body style Petrol transmission evidence Displayed ex-showroom range or eligible prices How the ₹9 lakh limit applies
Hyundai Aura Sedan Petrol and CNG; manual and automatic listed ₹5.99–8.59 lakh The displayed range remains below ₹9 lakh.
Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Hatchback Petrol and CNG; manual and automatic listed ₹5.59–8.04 lakh The displayed range remains below ₹9 lakh.
Hyundai Exter SUV 1.2-litre petrol; five-speed manual and Smart Auto AMT listed Starts at ₹5,80,600; model finder range ₹5.80–9.41 lakh Only specific lower-priced variants meet the ceiling; the full range does not.
Nissan Magnite SUV Petrol manual, AMT and turbo CVT listed Non-turbo MT starts at ₹5,69,400 and listed MT trims reach ₹8,76,000; AMT includes an ₹8,98,000 Tekna Listed MT and AMT versions can fit; the turbo CVT starts at ₹9,30,000 and does not.
Hyundai i20 Hatchback Petrol; manual and IVT listed ₹5.99–10.63 lakh Only a verified eligible variant can be considered; the range crosses the cap.

All values are the displayed manufacturer prices captured for this guide. They are not a promise of a particular dealer’s current quote, stock or on-road total.

Model-by-model guide

Hyundai Aura: the sedan option with a range below the cap

Hyundai’s model finder lists the Aura at ₹5.99–8.59 lakh ex-showroom. It is a sedan and is listed with petrol and CNG powertrains, plus manual and automatic choices. Because even the displayed upper end is below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom, the Aura is the clearest sedan-shaped fit on this list when the budget is defined at the showroom level.

That does not mean every Aura purchase will be below ₹9 lakh on-road. A buyer in a city with higher registration or insurance costs still needs an itemised quotation. Ask the dealer to identify the exact petrol trim, transmission and all mandatory charges rather than relying on the model’s starting price.

When comparing two Aura quotes, make sure both use the same fuel and gearbox. A petrol manual quote should not be compared with an automatic or CNG quote simply because all are advertised under the Aura name. Record the trim, price date and city alongside the quote so a later revision is easy to spot.

Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS: the hatchback range that stays below ₹9 lakh

The Grand i10 NIOS is listed as a hatchback with petrol and CNG choices and manual and automatic transmissions. Hyundai’s model finder shows ₹5.59–8.04 lakh ex-showroom, so the displayed range remains within the stated ex-showroom ceiling.

Its practical advantage in this comparison is price certainty at the model-range level: unlike the Exter and i20, the captured range does not cross ₹9 lakh. You still need to select a petrol variant, because the listed range also includes CNG versions and different transmission choices. Confirm whether the quoted amount is for the exact fuel and gearbox you want.

If you need an automatic-style transmission, request the automatic variant’s own price rather than assuming the range’s upper figure represents it. If you prefer a manual, ask whether the quoted entry version is currently available in your city and whether any mandatory package has been added to the dealer worksheet.

Hyundai Exter: SUV shape, but only selected variants qualify

The Exter is the SUV-shaped choice in Hyundai’s part of the shortlist. Its dedicated manufacturer page describes a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 61 kW (83 PS) and 113.8 Nm, with a five-speed manual and Smart Auto AMT. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

The same page gives a starting price of ₹5,80,600, while Hyundai’s model finder shows a broader ₹5.80–9.41 lakh range. That difference matters: the model is not wholly an under-₹9-lakh car. A lower-priced petrol manual or AMT variant may qualify, while higher trims do not. Check the exact variant code and current price before treating the Exter as eligible.

If your ceiling is on-road rather than ex-showroom, the higher-priced eligible Exter variants may leave too little room for registration and insurance. Request separate lines for ex-showroom, road tax, registration, insurance and optional accessories so you can see where the total crosses your limit.

Do not infer that the 83 PS output or 113.8 Nm torque makes the Exter faster, more economical or better value than the other vehicles here. The figures describe this engine only. A fair comparison of performance, economy or equipment would require comparable test and specification data for every candidate.

Nissan Magnite: manual and AMT possibilities, turbo CVT excluded

Nissan’s official price list shows petrol manual, AMT and turbo CVT versions. The listed non-turbo manual range starts at ₹5,69,400, with displayed MT trims through ₹8,76,000. The AMT list includes a Tekna at ₹8,98,000. These entries can fit a ₹9-lakh ex-showroom ceiling, subject to a current quotation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transmission distinction is essential. Nissan’s displayed turbo CVT prices start at ₹9,30,000, already above the ex-showroom limit. Do not describe the Magnite as universally under ₹9 lakh or imply that its turbo CVT qualifies because some manual and AMT trims do.

When asking for a Magnite quote, specify three things in writing: non-turbo or turbo engine, manual/AMT/CVT transmission and the exact trim. A dealer’s phrase such as “Magnite from ₹5.69 lakh” does not establish the price of a turbo, automatic or higher equipment level.

The ₹8,98,000 AMT example also illustrates why an ex-showroom pass is not an on-road pass. At that price, the remaining headroom is only the difference between the listed figure and ₹9 lakh before any registration, tax or insurance is added. Obtain the local total before assuming the AMT fits a complete-budget limit.

Hyundai i20: possible only at the lower end of its range

Hyundai lists the i20 as a petrol hatchback with manual and IVT options. Its displayed model range is ₹5.99–10.63 lakh ex-showroom. Consequently, the i20 belongs in a “check the specific variant” category, not an “every version is under ₹9 lakh” category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before comparing it with the Grand i10 NIOS or Magnite, obtain the current price of the exact petrol manual or IVT variant you want. If that variant is below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom, it can enter your shortlist; if not, the model’s low starting price is irrelevant to your purchase.

Do not use the i20’s ₹5.99-lakh starting figure to represent an IVT or a higher trim. Ask the dealer to write the transmission and variant beside the ex-showroom amount and to state whether the car is physically available or only listed in the range.

How to turn the shortlist into an actual purchase decision

1. Set the correct budget definition

Write down whether ₹9 lakh means ex-showroom or on-road. If it is on-road, tell the dealer that the total must include registration, road tax, insurance and every mandatory fee. Do not compare a model’s ex-showroom figure with another car’s on-road quote.

If you are financing, keep the vehicle price and the financed total separate in your notes. The price list establishes neither an interest rate nor a loan fee, so ask the lender or dealer to itemise those independently rather than treating them as part of the manufacturer’s displayed price.

2. Select fuel and transmission before comparing prices

“Petrol car” is not a single configuration. A manual, AMT, automatic or CVT can be a different variant with a different price. The Magnite demonstrates this clearly: listed manual and AMT versions include prices below ₹9 lakh, while the turbo CVT starts above it. The Hyundai models also list multiple fuel and transmission combinations.

Make a one-line requirement before opening price pages: petrol, preferred gearbox, body style and maximum ex-showroom amount. This prevents a CNG entry, an automatic with a manual’s price or a turbo version above the cap from slipping into the comparison.

3. Verify the exact variant on the current official list

  1. Open the manufacturer’s current model or price page for your market.
  2. Choose the model, petrol fuel type and desired transmission.
  3. Record the exact variant name, displayed ex-showroom price and date of the quote.
  4. Ask the dealer to confirm that the variant is currently orderable and available in your city.
  5. Reject any comparison that uses a model starting price for a different gearbox or trim.

Prices and lineups can change without notice. A saved screenshot or written quotation gives you a reference point, but it is not a guarantee that the price will remain unchanged until delivery.

4. Request an itemised local on-road quote

  1. Give the dealer your registration city and state.
  2. Request separate amounts for ex-showroom price, road tax, registration, insurance, FASTag and any mandatory fees.
  3. List accessories and protection packages separately so optional items do not appear to be compulsory.
  4. Check the final total against ₹9 lakh and ask what changes if you remove optional items.
  5. Obtain the quotation’s validity date and the policy or tax assumptions used.

This step is especially important for the Exter, i20 and higher Magnite trims, whose model ranges cross or approach the ex-showroom ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare like with like

Use one worksheet row per exact variant. Keep body style, fuel, transmission, ex-showroom price and city quote in separate columns. If one row is a manual and another is an AMT, label that difference prominently instead of presenting them as interchangeable. Likewise, keep optional accessories outside the vehicle-price comparison until you decide whether you actually want them.

Which body style fits which use case?

If your priority is… Models to investigate first Why this is a fit based on the available evidence
A sedan format Hyundai Aura It is listed as a sedan and its displayed ₹5.99–8.59 lakh range is below the ex-showroom cap.
A conventional hatchback Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS or a qualifying Hyundai i20 The Grand i10 NIOS range is ₹5.59–8.04 lakh; the i20 requires variant-level verification because its range reaches ₹10.63 lakh.
An SUV-shaped body Qualifying Hyundai Exter or Nissan Magnite MT/AMT Both have listed petrol SUV variants, but the Exter range crosses ₹9 lakh and the Magnite’s turbo CVT starts above it.
An automatic-style transmission within the ceiling Selected Aura, Grand i10 NIOS, Exter AMT or Magnite AMT variants Manufacturer listings show automatic, AMT or both for these models; the exact qualifying trim must be confirmed.

This is a format-and-eligibility guide, not a ranking of driving feel, interior space or ownership quality. The manufacturer pages establish listed body styles, powertrains, transmissions and prices, but not a comparable winner in those subjective categories.

Planning the money beyond the sticker price

For an on-road budget, think of the displayed vehicle price as only the first line in the calculation. Ask for the statutory and dealer charges as separate lines: road tax, registration, insurance, FASTag and any mandatory fee. Then request a second version with optional accessories removed. This makes it clear whether the budget problem comes from the car’s variant price, local taxation, insurance selection or add-ons.

Do not treat a discount, exchange benefit or finance promotion as permanent unless it appears in a dated written quotation. The manufacturer figures here are displayed prices, not a promise of a discount, waiting period, loan approval or delivery date. A low advertised starting price can therefore coexist with a higher final quote for the exact trim you want.

What this evidence does—and does not—tell you

The prices and specifications establish which displayed variants can be investigated under an ex-showroom ceiling. They do not establish:

  • Real-world fuel economy or a mileage winner.
  • Crash-test performance or a safety ranking.
  • Long-term reliability, resale value or service-cost totals.
  • Which car has the best equipment for the money.
  • Delivery waiting periods, discounts, dealer stock or finance offers.
  • A city-wide on-road price without a city-specific quotation.

Do not convert the Exter’s 83 PS and 113.8 Nm figures into a claim that it is quicker or more efficient than the other cars. They are manufacturer specifications for that engine, not a comparative test.

Common mistakes that push a purchase over budget

Confusing a starting price with the chosen car

A starting price identifies the cheapest listed version, not the automatic, higher-trim or turbo car shown in an advertisement. Use the exact variant price for your intended configuration.

Assuming a whole model range qualifies

The Exter reaches ₹9.41 lakh, the i20 reaches ₹10.63 lakh and the Magnite turbo CVT starts at ₹9.30 lakh. In each case, only a subset—or none, for that transmission—fits the ex-showroom cap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the ex-showroom/on-road difference

A car listed at ₹8.98 lakh ex-showroom is not an ₹8.98-lakh purchase. Registration, tax and insurance still have to be added, and their amounts depend on location and policy choices.

Using an old online price

Manufacturer pages state that prices can change, and Renault’s range information likewise describes displayed prices as ex-showroom for selected city limits and subject to change. Treat any online figure as time- and location-sensitive until a dealer confirms it.

Mixing fuel types in one comparison

Where a model is listed with petrol and CNG, check the fuel column before selecting the cheapest entry. A CNG price cannot answer a petrol-car question, even when both versions share the same model name.

Letting optional items hide the real total

Accessories, protection packages and similar additions should be listed separately. If they are bundled into a single figure, ask which items are mandatory and which can be declined before signing.

A practical shortlist checklist

  • Is your ₹9 lakh ceiling ex-showroom or on-road?
  • Have you selected petrol rather than a CNG version where a model offers both?
  • Have you selected the exact manual, AMT, automatic, IVT or CVT configuration?
  • Does the exact variant—not merely the model’s starting price—fall below the ceiling?
  • For the Exter, did you check that the chosen variant is one of the lower-priced versions?
  • For the Magnite, did you confirm that it is a qualifying MT or AMT rather than a turbo CVT?
  • For the i20, did you verify a specific variant because the range extends above ₹9 lakh?
  • Have you obtained a current, itemised quotation for your registration city?
  • Are accessories and other optional purchases separated from mandatory charges?
  • Have you recorded the quotation date and validity?

Bottom line

For an ex-showroom budget below ₹9 lakh, start with the Hyundai Aura and Grand i10 NIOS because their displayed model ranges stay below the ceiling. Consider a lower-priced Hyundai Exter if you want an SUV shape and confirm the exact variant. Consider a Nissan Magnite manual or AMT from the listed eligible prices, but exclude the turbo CVT because its displayed starting price is ₹9.30 lakh. Add the Hyundai i20 only after verifying a specific qualifying variant. If ₹9 lakh is your total on-road budget, no model is automatically proven eligible by these figures alone: obtain a current local, itemised quote before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which petrol cars are clearly below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom?

The displayed Hyundai Aura range is ₹5.99–8.59 lakh and the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS range is ₹5.59–8.04 lakh. Both remain below ₹9 lakh on the cited model finder, although you must still select the petrol variant and confirm the current price.

Is every Hyundai Exter variant under ₹9 lakh?

No. Hyundai’s model finder shows an Exter range of ₹5.80–9.41 lakh. Only selected lower-priced petrol manual or Smart Auto AMT variants may fit; verify the exact trim.

Which Nissan Magnite automatic versions fit the limit?

The official list includes AMT entries below ₹9 lakh, including a Tekna displayed at ₹8,98,000. The turbo CVT list starts at ₹9,30,000, so it is above the ex-showroom ceiling.

Can I buy a Hyundai i20 below ₹9 lakh?

Possibly, but only at the lower end of the range. Hyundai lists the i20 from ₹5.99 lakh to ₹10.63 lakh, so check the exact petrol manual or IVT variant rather than relying on the starting price.

Are these prices on-road?

No. They are displayed ex-showroom prices. Registration, road tax, insurance, FASTag and other charges depend on your location and must be added to obtain an on-road total.

Does the cheapest listed price always represent a petrol car?

Not necessarily. The Aura and Grand i10 NIOS listings include petrol and CNG versions. Confirm the fuel type, transmission and variant name before comparing prices.

What should I ask a dealer for an accurate quote?

Provide your registration city and request separate figures for the exact variant’s ex-showroom price, road tax, registration, insurance, FASTag, mandatory fees and optional accessories. Also ask for the quote’s validity date and current availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can these figures prove which car has the best mileage or safety?

No. The listed evidence establishes manufacturer prices, body styles, powertrain and transmission information. It does not establish a comparable ranking for real-world economy, crash performance, reliability, service costs or equipment value.

The Bottom Line

For a ₹9 lakh ex-showroom ceiling, begin with the Hyundai Aura or Grand i10 NIOS, then check qualifying Exter, Magnite MT/AMT and i20 variants. Confirm fuel, gearbox, trim, city price and the complete on-road total before booking.
