Jack Aitken is poised to clinch the 2026 IMSA GTP driver championship simply by starting Petit Le Mans. He qualified fourth in the No. 31 Cadillac Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R, and NBC Sports reported on race morning that rolling onto the grid would secure the title. That is an expected clinch, not a completed race result: the 10-hour finale was scheduled to start at 12:10 p.m. ET on October 3.
What Aitken needs to clinch the GTP title
Before qualifying, IMSA’s championship math gave Aitken a 147-point lead over Laurin Heinrich. Aitken’s No. 31 Cadillac needed to start and finish ninth or better to secure the driver title; Heinrich needed to win while Aitken finished outside the top nine. The race-morning update changed the practical picture: NBC Sports reported Aitken qualified fourth and would clinch by starting. At the time of that report, the start was still pending, so the title was not yet officially secured.

Aitken had acknowledged the uncertainty before the race, telling IMSA, “Anything can happen, especially at Petit.”

Heinrich’s entry and the Porsche challenge
Heinrich was entered in the No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 with Felipe Nasr and Julien Andlauer. His pre-race title route depended on a win and an Aitken finish below ninth, but the reported starting-triggered clinch left little meaningful championship suspense once the No. 31 took the grid.

Cadillac’s team and manufacturer stakes
The No. 31’s start was also set to secure the GTP team title for its team. Cadillac entered with a 136-point manufacturer lead over Porsche, and IMSA said a Cadillac entry starting would secure the manufacturer championship. These stakes were separate from Aitken’s driver title, even though the same start was decisive for each.
What makes Petit Le Mans a major finale
The 29th Motul Petit Le Mans was scheduled as a 10-hour race at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. IMSA lists the circuit at 2.54 miles with 12 turns. The 54-car field spans four classes:

Petit Le Mans is the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship finale and also decides Michelin Endurance Cup and other championship contests. The GTP driver title had become close to settled before the start, but the other class battles were tighter: IMSA’s event preview put LMP2’s lead at four points, GTD’s at six and GTD PRO’s at 47 entering the finale.
Race-day schedule and viewing
IMSA’s September 23 event notebook listed a 12:10 p.m. ET start on October 3, with NBC coverage from noon to 3 p.m., NBCSN from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and flag-to-flag streaming on Peacock in the United States. International streaming was listed on IMSA.tv and IMSA’s official YouTube channel. These are event-day listings, not a current schedule for later viewing.
