Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in Free Practice 2 for the 2026 FIA Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, clocking 1:37.528 for Ferrari. Isack Hadjar finished 0.099 seconds behind and Lando Norris 0.137 seconds back. The result was an FP2 lead—not the fastest time across all three practice sessions.
FP2 classification: Leclerc leads by less than a tenth
Formula 1’s official classification lists Leclerc first after 29 laps, with Hadjar second after 23 and Norris third after 25. Max Verstappen was fourth, 0.257 seconds behind Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton fifth, 0.305 seconds back.

The FIA described FP1 as dry and sunny. FP2 had a different weather story: the forecast ahead of the session gave a 90 per cent chance of precipitation. That figure was a forecast, not a measurement of rain that fell. The official account records a dry-weather classification, but does not say FP2 ran under scorching sun or establish that rain arrived.

With rain threatening, all 22 drivers went out shortly after the pit lane opened at 16:00 local time. Most began on Medium tyres, while several teams and Pierre Gasly started on Softs. Drivers moved onto Softs earlier than usual as the rain threat persisted. The FIA’s account of the forecast and session conditions is available in its FP2 session report and FP1 session report.
Why Leclerc’s lead is specific to FP2
Leclerc did not top every practice session at Sepang. He was fourth in FP1, 0.847 seconds behind Verstappen, and fifth in FP3, 0.714 seconds behind Kimi Antonelli. These results are separate session classifications, not a weekend-wide ranking. Formula 1’s official listings show the FP1 classification and FP3 classification.

A late Virtual Safety Car halted further opportunities
In the closing stages, Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi stopped in the middle sector, prompting a Virtual Safety Car and yellow flags with two minutes remaining. The FIA reported that the interruption ended the prospect of late improvements; Leclerc’s earlier benchmark stood as the session’s fastest lap.
