What the teardown reportedly found
Autoblog reported on a teardown documented by I Do Cars of a third-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 from a 2022 F-150 Lariat. The truck had accumulated about 180,000 miles in approximately four years as a commercial fleet vehicle. The account describes a melted piston, aluminum debris in the oil pan, and damage involving bearings and camshaft areas. Autoblog’s report and a second account from AutoTech Plus provide the available details; they are secondary coverage, not independent inspection records.

What the oil-change records do—and do not—show
The coverage describes some shorter intervals alongside gaps of roughly 12,000–13,000 miles in the truck’s service-history report. Those gaps show that service was not documented in that report; they do not prove that no oil change took place. The teardown’s reported contamination and wear are concerning, but neither establishes that the recorded gaps caused the piston failure.
This is one heavily used truck, not a fleet-wide reliability study. The reported mileage and damage describe this individual case; they cannot establish how often this engine fails or whether a defect affects the broader engine line.

What Ford says about oil-change intervals
Ford’s 2022 F-150 owner’s manual says the truck’s oil-change reminder bases service timing on how the vehicle is used: “Your vehicle comes with an oil change reminder that determines when you should change the engine oil based on how you use your vehicle.” The manual gives these intervals:

Ford lists moderate to heavy loads or towing, mountainous or off-road driving, extended idling, and extended operation in hot or cold conditions among severe-use examples. A commercial vehicle’s actual duty matters: frequent idling, towing, or heavy loads may put it in a different category from ordinary commuting. Follow the reminder and the schedule in the owner’s manual for the specific truck rather than treating an interval suggested by a teardown host as Ford’s requirement. Ford’s 2022 F-150 Owner’s Manual is the source for these intervals.

Does this case prove a long oil interval melted the piston?
No. The reports do not determine the initiating cause. They mention possible triggers—including a tune, bad fuel, oil consumption, a stuck wastegate, or a faulty injector—but present them as possibilities, not confirmed findings. The teardown is evidence of serious damage in one engine and an unevenly documented service history; it does not prove that an oil-change gap caused the failure.
