The 62-year-old driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. PerthNow reported the incident on 6 January 2022; its account does not establish why the truck moved or confirm brake failure.
What happened on Greenmount Hill?
PerthNow reported that dashcam footage credited to Dash Cam Owners Australia showed a truck moving backwards on Greenmount Hill. The report says the driver apparently got out to check the brakes. The truck then hit a power pole, sparking a small scrub fire, and the 62-year-old driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The report did not name the driver.
The footage was filmed on 27 December; PerthNow’s story, published on 6 January 2022, does not give a year for the filming date. The incident is therefore understood to have occurred on 27 December 2021.
Did brake failure cause the truck to reverse?
The available report does not establish a cause. It describes the driver’s apparent action as checking the brakes, but does not confirm that the brakes failed, explain why the driver got out, or cite an official investigation finding. It also does not establish the truck’s mechanical condition. The cause should therefore be treated as unknown.

What safety rules apply to heavy vehicles on the hill?
Main Roads Western Australia’s access permit application for 36.5-metre vehicles lists controls for vehicles covered by that permit: stop at the top of Greenmount Hill to check brakes, descend at no more than 40 km/h, use an auxiliary braking system, and have forward- and rear-facing cameras. These are permit-specific requirements; the report does not identify the truck involved in the incident as a 36.5-metre vehicle or establish that the permit conditions applied to it.
Greenmount Hill’s historical truck-safety measures
A Western Australian Government statement dated 10 March 1995 described a safety package for Greenmount Hill that included a truck arrester bed and a requirement for heavy-vehicle drivers to stop at the top to check their brakes and load and engage a low gear. The statement put the package cost at $2.6 million and said the arrester bed could stop vehicle combinations up to 64 tonnes. Those are historical figures and do not describe the cause of, or response to, the 2021 incident.
