Crashes can trigger or worsen peak-hour congestion on Perth’s Mitchell Freeway, but the available official evidence does not confirm a specific incident or delay on Mitchell Freeway or Reid Highway today. For live alerts, closures, detours and congestion, check Main Roads WA’s Travel Map before leaving and again if conditions change.
What the evidence says about crashes and congestion
A Main Roads WA project proposal extract links collisions with congestion on the Mitchell Freeway and identifies the on-ramps between Reid Highway and Powis Street as an area with high congestion and a large number of vehicle accidents. This is historical context, not a live traffic report or an estimate of how many minutes a particular crash adds to a trip. The extract is reproduced in an Australian Government FOI document release: FOI disclosure log.
The same extract says that 74% of crashes on the Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways in the five years to 2019 were same-lane rear-end collisions. That figure covers both freeways and a historical period; it is not a current percentage for the Mitchell Freeway alone.
These figures support a connection between collisions and congestion in a named Mitchell Freeway area, but they do not establish that every peak-hour queue is crash-related. Traffic conditions can have multiple causes, and a current, location-specific notice is needed to establish whether a particular crash is affecting a route.

How to check current Perth traffic and detours
Main Roads WA describes its Travel Map as providing “the latest road incident and impact information, so that you can plan a safe and efficient road trip.” It shows alerts, closures, roads open with caution or subject to conditions, detours, signal outages and events. A Google traffic layer displays congestion across WA roads. Use the map for present conditions rather than treating older crash reports or statistics as current.
- Open the Main Roads WA Travel Map before departure.
- Check alerts and road-status categories along the Mitchell Freeway, Reid Highway and any route you may use instead.
- Turn on the Google traffic layer to see congestion, then check the map again if conditions change during your trip.
What recurring traffic data can—and cannot—tell you
For patterns over time rather than an active incident, Main Roads WA’s traffic data map provides hourly and quarter-hour vehicle volumes, AM and PM peak-hour statistics, median and 85th-percentile speeds, and speed-compliance views. Data can be downloaded. Results depend on the selected monitoring site and time period, so they can help describe recurring traffic patterns but do not identify the cause of a queue happening now.

What the Mitchell Smart Freeway does
Main Roads WA lists its southbound Mitchell Smart Freeway, between Hester Avenue and Vincent Street, as operational. The agency says the system has 16 managed entry ramps and 23 above-lane gantries. Ramp signals meter vehicles entering the freeway; sensors and CCTV monitor traffic; and electronic signs can display speed changes and lane closures. The project also includes an additional southbound lane from Hodges Drive to Hepburn Avenue, a dedicated lane between the Hepburn Avenue on-ramp and Warwick Road off-ramp, safety barriers, emergency stopping bays and emergency breakdown lanes where required. These are features intended to help manage traffic and incidents; the project description is not an independent evaluation showing how much congestion has fallen. The operational southbound system also does not establish that a particular crash or delay elsewhere on the Mitchell Freeway, or on Reid Highway, is being managed by it.

What is known about the West Perth section
In a 2025 response, the Parliament of Western Australia reported two serious crashes and no fatalities at or near the Mitchell Freeway’s West Perth section in 2024. That is a geographically limited count, not a total for the full freeway. The same response said options to transform the CBD freeway section were under investigation to reduce congestion and improve safety and reliability; development of the CBD northbound and southbound projects was ongoing at the time of the answer. The cited material does not provide a Reid Highway-specific crash-frequency figure or a precise current delay caused by a crash. For broader road-safety counts, the WA Road Safety Commission’s statistics page describes its annual reporting and data sources. Do not use a count for one freeway segment or a historical combined-freeway statistic as a substitute for a current incident notice or a Reid Highway-specific measure.
