The Perth traffic turmoil described in this report was a historical event on Monday morning, 15 September 2025—not a live traffic alert. PerthNow reported lane closures and heavy traffic after incidents on Stock Road, the Kwinana Freeway and Reid Highway. For current conditions, check Main Roads WA’s Travel Map before setting out.
What happened in Perth traffic on 15 September 2025?
PerthNow reported three separate incidents affecting major roads that Monday morning. The report described lane closures and heavy traffic but did not provide measured delay times, queue lengths or a total congestion figure. The details below reflect conditions reported at publication time; they should not be treated as current closures.
Stock Road near Winterfold Road
A crash on northbound Stock Road near the Winterfold Road intersection shut multiple lanes and caused heavy traffic in Hamilton Hill. PerthNow said motorists were advised to consider alternate routes where possible and drive cautiously.
Kwinana Freeway near Manning Road
A vehicle breakdown closed the left lane of the northbound Kwinana Freeway near Manning Road. PerthNow reported congestion backing up past the South Street off-ramps.

Reid Highway approaching Mitchell Freeway
A truck breakdown blocked the left lane of westbound Reid Highway before the Mitchell Freeway off-ramp for more than 30 minutes. The truck had been towed by the time PerthNow published its report, but traffic remained heavy on approach. Main Roads urged motorists to be cautious and allow space for a safe merge.
How to check Perth road conditions now
For current incidents, closures, detours and other road impacts, use the Main Roads WA Travel Map. Main Roads says it carries live road incident and impact information, including crashes and breakdowns, closures, roads open with caution, detours, signal outages and events likely to cause congestion. Its guidance says: “Our Travel Map provides road closure information to help you plan your trip.”

For full road closures within the City of Perth, consult the City’s road closures page. The City also points to its monitored activities weekly report for possible disruptions such as lane closures. These are city-centre information channels, not a complete live map of metropolitan Perth.
Separate from the 2025 incidents, Water Corporation’s Alkimos to Wanneroo pipeline project page describes active traffic management and staged closures or detours on some northern-suburbs roads. Project timing is indicative and may vary, so check the page for current details.

What to do if your vehicle breaks down
Main Roads WA advises drivers who break down on a major road or freeway to try to leave the road in the vehicle if possible, or move to an emergency lane or roadside. Once stopped, stay in the vehicle, keep your seat belt on and switch on hazard lights. Call 000 if required; Main Roads lists 138 138 for further advice. Check its driving guidance for the latest instructions and contact details.
If you are stopped in the Northbridge Tunnel
Main Roads says to remain inside your vehicle in the Northbridge Tunnel, which has no emergency lanes, and wait for instructions by radio, public-address system or electronic signs. Lane signals mean: red X for a closed lane, flashing yellow for caution and green arrow for an open lane. The tunnel is 1.6 kilometres long, according to Main Roads’ Northbridge Tunnel guidance.

Driving in wet conditions
The PerthNow report connected the incidents with a wet weekend and relayed Main Roads advice for rain: drive to the conditions, turn on headlights, maintain a safe braking distance and allow extra travel time. Check live road information before choosing an alternative route; the 2025 report does not establish present-day route availability or travel-time savings.
