McLaren calls the W1 the latest chapter in its “1” car lineage, following the F1 and P1. Revealed on 6 October 2024, the W1 combines a hybrid V8 powertrain with rear-wheel drive and track-focused active aerodynamics. Its place in McLaren’s story is the company’s own framing—not proof that it is an objectively superior successor to either earlier car.
Why McLaren links the W1 to the F1 and P1
McLaren presented the W1 as the next car in its “1” lineage. The reveal took place on 6 October 2024, a date the company said marked 50 years since its first Formula 1 World Championship win. That anniversary and the F1–P1–W1 connection are part of McLaren’s positioning for the car, not an independent ranking of the three models. McLaren W1 official page
The connection is most useful as a statement of intent: McLaren is placing the W1 alongside two landmark cars in its own road-car history. The available material does not establish a like-for-like independent test of all three, so it cannot support a numerical performance leaderboard or an unqualified claim that the W1 is faster or better than the F1 or P1.
What powers the W1
McLaren describes the W1’s powertrain as an all-new MHP-8 V8 paired with an E-module, F1-derived battery technology and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The system drives the rear wheels. McLaren gives a combined output of 1,275 PS; that is the manufacturer’s stated specification, not an independently measured result. McLaren W1 official page

The hybrid arrangement is a significant part of the W1’s engineering concept, but it does not make the car all-wheel drive: McLaren specifies rear-wheel drive. Its official P1 legacy page also describes active aerodynamics as a way to balance downforce and drag, providing context for the lineage without establishing a direct technical comparison between the P1 and W1. McLaren’s stated performance and aerodynamic figures
McLaren’s 2024 reveal-era product material lists the following headline specifications. They are manufacturer claims rather than measurements attributed to an independent testing organisation.

| Specification | McLaren’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| Combined power | 1,275 PS |
| 0–200 km/h acceleration | 5.8 seconds |
| Power-to-weight ratio | 911 PS per tonne |
| Maximum downforce | 1,000 kg |
| Active Long Tail extension in Race mode | 300 mm |
The Long Tail’s stated 300 mm extension is specifically tied to Race mode. The downforce figure is a stated maximum, not a value that should be assumed at every speed or in every driving mode. The available official material does not supply a matched test protocol for comparing these figures with those of the F1 and P1. McLaren W1 official page

McLaren highlights hydraulic steering, a Formula 1-inspired suspension concept and carbon-ceramic brakes. Race mode changes the aerodynamic and suspension calibration to support track performance. The car therefore pairs a road-going layout with systems McLaren says can be configured for more track-focused use; the figures above alone do not establish how it compares in real-world lap times or road comfort.

For the three-car lineage, the more defensible comparison is conceptual: McLaren presents the W1 as a hybrid, rear-wheel-drive car with adjustable active aero, while its P1 legacy page describes active aero in terms of balancing downforce and drag. The cited material does not provide consistent, independently measured specifications across the F1, P1 and W1 for a direct performance comparison. McLaren W1 official page · McLaren P1 legacy page
