Opel announced a recommended European price of €42,900 including VAT for the Ampera on 5 July 2011, with sales expected to begin in the final quarter of that year. In Germany, the more extensively equipped launch-version ePionier Edition was announced at €48,200. These are historical announced prices, not current used-car values.
Opel Ampera prices announced in 2011
Opel’s 5 July 2011 announcement set a recommended Europe-wide price of €42,900 including VAT. The company expected sales to start across Europe in the last quarter of 2011, but cautioned that equipment differences between national versions could affect final prices. Opel’s 2011 announcement therefore should not be read as one guaranteed transaction price for every country.
| Price | What it referred to | Market and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| €42,900 including VAT | Recommended price for the Ampera | Europe-wide announcement; Opel said country-level equipment differences could change final prices. |
| €48,200 | Initial ePionier Edition, with richer equipment | Germany; launch-edition price, not the Europe-wide recommended figure. |
What the German ePionier Edition included
Germany’s initial ePionier Edition was described as fully equipped. Its listed features included a navigation and audio package with a Bose sound system, rear camera and parking aid, leather upholstery, heated seats, an alarm, and exclusive Lithium White three-layer metallic paint. Its higher announced price reflects a different edition and equipment specification from the €42,900 European recommendation.
What buyers were paying for
The Ampera was an extended-range electric vehicle, not a conventional hybrid in which an engine directly drives the wheels. Its front wheels were electrically driven; when the battery reached its minimum charge, a 1.4-litre petrol engine could run a generator to supply electricity. Opel’s 2021 retrospective describes a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 111 kW/150 hp electric drive unit. Opel’s retrospective gives battery-only range as 40–80 km depending on terrain, driving technique, and temperature, and says total range could exceed 500 km. These are manufacturer-reported period figures, not independent test results.

Opel also reports period NEDC figures of 1.2 l/100 km combined fuel consumption and 27 g/km CO₂, measured under the regulations in force at the time. Those values belong to the historical test regime and should not be treated as a prediction of real-world fuel use or emissions.

Opel says the Ampera went on sale at the end of 2011 and shared the 2012 European Car of the Year award with its Chevrolet Volt sister model. The company reports 6,631 European sales and about 21% of the European electric passenger-car segment in 2012. Opel further says production ended in 2015 and cumulative registrations exceeded 10,000. These are figures reported by the manufacturer in its 2021 retrospective.

- A great gift idea!
As a discontinued model, the Ampera’s announced 2011 prices are useful historical context, not a guide to what a used example costs today. A present-day asking price depends on the individual car and market; the cited launch announcement does not establish current resale values.
