For 2026, the Prelude is the clearest new Honda sports coupe to consider, but it is a grand touring hybrid rather than a conventional manual sports car. Honda has outlined future performance projects and hybrid plans; it has not confirmed a new NSX or S2000.
Honda has never used one layout or body style to define performance. Its sports-car history includes a front-wheel-drive coupe, a mid-engine supercar, a rear-drive roadster and high-performance versions of practical cars. The nameplates and specifications below cover different generations and markets: Honda’s U.S. model-history material applies to U.S. vehicles, while its UK heritage material and Japan-market announcements describe other parts of the lineup.
What are Honda’s sports cars?
The main threads are the Prelude coupe, the NSX supercar, the S2000 roadster and the Type R performance family. They serve different purposes, so a Type R hatchback is not simply another version of a two-seat sports car.

How Honda’s sports-car role changed
Prelude: a coupe that keeps changing with the times
Honda says the Prelude launched for the 1979 model year in the United States, bringing a sport coupe into its lineup. Its five-generation run continued through the 2001 model year. Honda identifies the 2026 car as the sixth generation, so this is a return after a long break rather than an uninterrupted model run.

Technology has been part of the Prelude’s identity: Honda associates earlier generations with innovations including four-wheel steering. The new generation changes the emphasis again, pairing a coupe format with hybrid power and a grand touring brief that balances driving enjoyment and everyday comfort.
NSX: a supercar designed to make performance approachable
Honda’s corporate history presents the NSX as a new-generation sports car intended to combine high performance with approachability. Production of the first generation began in 1990. Honda’s 2005 discontinuation announcement identifies its mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and all-aluminum monocoque body; Honda reported more than 18,000 worldwide sales over the 15-year run through June 2005.
Honda UK describes the NSX as its first supercar and characterizes the later NSX as a hybrid. The name therefore spans distinct generations, not one continuous technical recipe.

S2000: a dedicated open-top sports car
Honda introduced the S2000 in 1999 as a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car with 50:50 front/rear weight distribution. The company announced that worldwide production would end by the close of June 2009. Honda’s 2009 notice reported more than 110,000 worldwide sales through December 2008.
Type R: performance engineering across several models
Type R began on the Japan-market NSX in the early 1990s, according to Honda, then spread to the Integra, Civic and Accord by the end of that decade. Honda reported about 200,000 Type R sales worldwide as of January 2022. In the United States, Honda’s model-history page describes the Civic Type R as a second-generation model and dates its launch to the 2017 model year; those U.S. generation labels should not be treated as a global timeline.
Unlike the dedicated two-seat NSX and S2000, Type R applies a focused performance approach to cars with more practical body styles. Honda’s UK heritage material traces the R badge to racing and calls the Civic Type R its current “real-world hero.”

What Honda sports car can you consider now?
The 2026 Prelude is the new sports coupe in Honda’s current story. Honda announced in January 2026 that it had gone on sale in September 2025. Availability depends on country and dealer inventory, so check the relevant Honda market site or local retailers rather than assuming the U.S. model is offered everywhere.
2026 Prelude: U.S. specifications
Honda’s U.S. press kit describes the Prelude as the first electrified Prelude and the first Honda hybrid-electric model to use Civic Type R-derived chassis hardware. Its two-motor hybrid system pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle direct-injection engine with electric motors. Honda lists combined system output at 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque, and fuel economy at 46 city, 41 highway and 44 combined mpg. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
The chassis draws on Civic Type R hardware, but Honda specifies Prelude tuning. Equipment listed for the U.S. model includes dual-axis strut front suspension, wide front and rear tracks, four-piston Brembo front calipers, large brakes and adaptive dampers. The Adaptive Damper System is standard and tuned for the Prelude. Honda also lists Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual drive modes, plus 19-inch wheels with 235/40R19 tires.

What S+ Shift does—and does not do
Honda S+ Shift simulates the experience of a performance eight-speed transmission by managing engine RPM and coordinating the electric drive motor. Paddle shifters, downshift blips, rev matching and gear holding help create that shifting effect. It is a control mode, not a conventional eight-speed gearbox.
The result is a different proposition from a traditional manual sports car: the Prelude combines hybrid power, a coupe body and performance-oriented chassis components with electronic simulation of shifts. Whether that balance suits a buyer depends on whether they want a comfortable, electrified grand tourer or a more direct manual-driving experience.

Yes. The sixth-generation Prelude is the 2026 model, following the five-generation U.S. run that ended after model year 2001. Its return revives the nameplate, but the new car is not a simple continuation of the old formula: Honda positions it as a hybrid-electric grand touring sports coupe.

What has Honda announced about future sports cars?
Honda’s official announcements point to performance development and more hybrid models, but they distinguish concepts and plans from confirmed production cars.
Sport Line, HRC concepts and Prelude parts
At Tokyo Auto Salon on January 9, 2026, Honda introduced Sport Line for on-road models and Trail Line for off-road models, describing them as future product lines carrying Honda Sports DNA. Honda said Sport Line was scheduled to launch as a new line of production models. It also showed a Civic Type R HRC Concept; the company identified it as a concept, not a production announcement.
Honda said it was developing HRC Performance Parts for the all-new Prelude and exhibited a Prelude HRC Concept equipped with those parts. The stated purpose is to enhance driving performance. The announcement did not establish consumer availability, pricing or fitment by market.
A Japan-market Civic e:HEV RS plan
Honda showed a Civic e:HEV RS prototype for a planned production model scheduled to go on sale in Japan before the end of 2026. Honda said it would be the second model after the Prelude to use S+ Shift. This is a Japan-specific plan in the announcement, not confirmation of the same grade in North America or Europe.

Honda’s 2026 business briefing sets out a plan for 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2030, primarily in North America. Honda does not characterize those 15 models as sports cars, so the plan is evidence of a broader hybrid direction rather than a promise about any particular performance model.
Will Honda make a new NSX or S2000?
Honda has not confirmed a road-going NSX successor or an S2000 successor in the announcements described here. In January 2026, Honda listed a “Honda Heritage Works: NSX Restoration Prototype” among Tokyo Auto Salon exhibits. That is an official restoration and heritage signal, not an announcement that a new NSX is in development or production. Enthusiast speculation should not be mistaken for a Honda production plan.
